Joy, shorter skirts are more flattering for everyone. It's a plain and simple fact and I'll put my head on block for it :0)

Cathy, you are not what I would call a conservative dresser. The waistcoat which you bought is KILLER. But you are very petite so any form of longer skirt will just swallow you up. Rock your dramatic pieces in other ways and stay away from long skirts.

Audi rocks mid-calf length skirts because the styles themselves are so, so, so funky and on top of that the outfit is pretty OTT. They are also not ankle length skirts which makes a huge difference. Plus Audi wears heels, is pretty tall and fully understands flattering proportion. It's hard to do, but she totally gets it right.

To me the long ankle length skirts seem right only for formal occasions or "pioneer day" at the grade school. I wore them years ago and don't miss them at all. The wider ones get caught in car doors and everything else. The narrow ones are impossible to walk in. While Sal looks fine in some of these, I can't help but think that a shorter skirt would be more flattering.

Angie, I hadn't read your response to SHS posts. I do love how Audi dresses -- she can give anything her own twist.

My attraction to long skirts is based on my lifelong attraction to dramatic clothes, such as the controversial vest I posted a few months ago. I've tended to dress in moderate extremes (if that makes any sense). I've been through phases where I would incorporate elements of the dramatic (gothic, medieval, punk, etc) in my everyday outfits. I've definitely mellowed out in my recent years, but miss out on those aspects of dressing, and sometimes don't feel comfortable dressing "conservative."

I also didn't quite get your explanation, Angie. I am not a fan of full-length skirts - admittedly Sal has enough spunk to overcome it, but the whole look just doesn't appeal to me.
A long time ago I used to have a mid-calf lengh trumpet (I think) skirt that I loved, and I wouldn't mind to revisit that style.

Angie--did you put "mid calf" and "ankle length" backwards or am I misunderstanding? You like mid-calf but not ankle length, right?

I wore long skirts to death in the late 90's as a student. I had two key looks:
1) a black jersey maxi skirt + black polo neck + long silver pendant + denim jacket + sneakers + black nylon bag. I had my hair styled like Gweneth Paltrow in sliding doors
http://uk.images.search.yahoo......=138g0it8u

2) Prior to that look I wore a long paisly print maxi + cami + beads + cork sandals. My hair was very long and ringletty.

Strangely enough I have no nostalgia for the look but maybe the Gweneth cut?

I answered this question on SHS's thread yesterday, Cathy. Did you see it by any chance? I've re-pasted here:.

"Cathy, I don't think long skirts (and I mean mid calf only because I just don't see ankle length unless you're off to the Oscars and the likes) work on anyone unless they have LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of funky detailing. They look dated, dowdy and unflattering otherwise. But Audi wears her edgy mid-calf skirts with multiple petticoats really well, in her usual OTT way. That's the way to do it in my book. Petites, stay away"

The ones that are a bit shorter, that she has on with the slouchy boots are okay...but just okay. The rest I don't like at all, especially the ankle length ones. I really dislike longer skirts on most people unless they have some sort of religious restriction.

I love the look of long skirts, and I like how Sal at Already Pretty wears them. She just posted a tutorial on how to wear them:
http://www.alreadypretty.com/2.....+Pretty%29

About 15-20 years ago, I used to wear long (ankle-floor length) skirts as part of my everyday wardrobe. Now I think I'm ready to revisit and reincorporate them into my outfits.

Anyone else?
