Cindy, here are some virtual hugs from my son & me. He wants to see his geandparents. We used to be with them for all of Christmas, don’t have any traditions of our own because my mom insisted on that. Now it could be my dad’s last Christmas & they are afraid to have us come home. My son has his mama, but he wants his grandma & grandpa! We thought of insisting, because we really think it’s worse where they are than where we are, but he is old enough to realize that the resultant tension would not be the joy & harmony he’s looking for.

I mostly buy off season to keep the spend down. It works for me because I have a classic style and so am buying pieces that will last for years. I keep lists of what I need and what I don’t so I don’t buy another pair of black pants when I really need some color. I then use some budget in season if I see new colors that draw my attention and seem fleeting or if I find something to fill a gap I have had a long time. This year I bought matching sets of accessories like scarfs and mittens or leather gloves that are hard to find on clearance.

I used to wear things right away. These days, I wind up having to save things because there is NO WAY I am wearing it to work where it WILL get destroyed. I recently ordered a cashmere sweater from NADAAM and it is sitting under my Christmas tree unopened because Christmas is just depressing me this year (I want my mommy and i don't dare go visit and risk her health), so at least i have a present i gave myself waiting for me under my tree.

That is a good question. It depends on how much I need it and if it is in my comfort zone. The first shiny silver metallic shoes I bought I did not have the courage to wear at first. Finally I just did it and eventually they looked. normal to me I am going through this now with rather Western style booties. I like them and they are comfortable but I am not yet comfortable wearing this style so I wear something else. Strange, but I just realized that I wore a bright orange coat the day after I bought it.

I shop a bit differently. I buy lots of stuff that I like for someone and then consider whether that someone is me later. I also buy out of season because that it is catch as catch can in the second hand market. But certain staples I will wear right away if I find something I really like. Jeans especially.

Great question. I’d just mentioned a deep green sweater that I’ve not yet worn. I used to always buy and save for future, because I guess I like to have something new for an “occasion,” whether a simple date night, family gathering, or routine holiday - you know - the kind that comes every year with the same traditions. And I always like to have something new to take on a trip, but shopping “for the trip” isn’t always possible or practical.

I enjoy shopping B&M, so when I’d find something I liked, and the timing from seasonal predictions or budget standpoint was right, I’d often get it even if not really needed at the time. This gave me choices to shop my closet and find something new!

But I feel my attitude and method has really changed since I’ve retired. I quickly discovered the types of clothing I needed and wore, got rid of a lot that was not used or useful, and stocked up a little on the kinds of pieces I did use. After that, now when I buy something, I wear it almost immediately, within a few days or a week. I quit shopping end of season sales because I know I have enough for next year. I like what I have and wear almost everything regularly. I now get to wear what I want and be myself rather than dress for my job - that really helps.

However, it’s still fun to have a special new item waiting for that special occasion- so there are a handful still in my closet.

I’m another weight fluctuater too , and assuming that something will fit next year or even next season can be a big mistake . It’s not uncommon for me to be a completely different size from season to season . I never know what the hell is going on half the time .

Most things go into rotation right away because I sometimes wait a realllly long time before pulling the trigger. Every now and then I hem and haw over a purchase, and that’s usually a sign it needs to be returned. I used to do more out-of-season shopping and putting things aside for later, but it seems things are always discounted these days regardless of season, so I no longer wait for clearance sales the way I used to.

The exception might be my habit of browsing for non-boots (sneakers, sandals, anything but boots!) in late winter, in anticipation of spring. It can be a real morale boost to have some new fair-weather shoes to look forward to during the endless months of snow, mud and slush.

I usually wait a bit ( or more ) before wearing a new item. New blue puffer was bought in April ( great sale ) and only got worn in the end of October.
Shoes are always a struggle- rarely worn right away- usually need stretching.
Tops are much easier- worn almost immediately.

And Suntiger I agree that shopping when the season is in full swing can work well, especially if some “mid-season sales” or similar can come along by then. It doesn’t work for Angie whose tiny sizes tend to sell out early, I remember. I usually have enough for the start of most seasons so I don’t need to buy until they are well in train, but as I perhaps gradually reduce the size of my wardrobe- trying, trying- that might change? Great topic Carla, you think of the best topics.

I guess there are two questions: “Do I want it?” and “Do I need want it right now?”. I wanted a black, wool coat and would’ve bought it any time of the year. I’ve been looking for 2 years and it just happened that I found it in November. I don’t often need something right away. It is not like I don’t have anything to wear There are certain items I would want to have and I will buy when I find them.

I lean towards waiting a bit, not a long time. I think it is because I am taking such care and putting such thought into the few new things. Only 10 items this year, 8 were new, one thrifted, one a gift. And sometimes it may be towards the end of a season when I have noticed a wardrobe hole- like slim black ponte pants this past winter when I had to pull out some old ones with leather patches which I had demoted to “old clothes” because the particular outfit really demanded some! ( In my mind). I found them too old-looking and have donated them for rags. And it was so hard to find more, because skinny-ish ponte pants are no longer fashionable really. By the time I found them it was getting too warm and they are unworn, but I love that silhouette on me and know it will be easy to make outfits with them next autumn. Funnily enough I just went down the Kibbe rabbit-hole again and the slimmer pants are said to be good for the Theatrical Romantic body type that I think I am.
Also, sometimes I buy something after a lot of thought and still get a bit scared that I have done it wrong? And take a few weeks to take the plunge as it were? Then usually it does work out and I don’t know what I was scared of. I suspect you have too much confidence to do that, Carla.

All of the above. I don’t buy things “for a special occasion” unless such an occasion is coming up, but I did buy things that were too small when I was losing weight (~80% success rate) and I do buy things regardless of season (recall being confused once when someone told me not to buy a certain dress “because it’s a summer dress”. Asked for explanation & got “it’s December”. Took a long time for that ember to glow bright enough for me to see, lol). But when things fit, are in season, and have some relation to currency, then I wear whatever I please. I imagine that for people to whom it is important to always be on trend, this would be impossible, as they’d have to get new stuff as soon as it comes out, months before it can be worn.

It varies. Seasonal items can be worn that night or the next day if they work with the weather. I LOVE wearing my new stuff right away too!

Out of season stuff has to wait - sometimes months - and so do alterations.

Sometimes I save new things to wear them for an occasion. Like I saved my new turquoise stash for our Thanksgiving long weekend so that I had something to look forward to. Same with my new red pants that I am saving for Christmas. Got to keep finding new ways to get excited and happy in this ongoing hectic pandemic. Life in Seattle is still very restricted, and I don't see that changing till the end of Spring. Onward we go!

It depends. I tend to shop out of season, so I do not get a chance to wear things right away. Trouble is, this approach worked MUCH better for me when I lived in a 1.5 season climate I knew WHEN to shop for WHAT and it worked great.

Right after I moved, I bought things I didn't assess well enough, so by the time I was ABLE to wear something, sometimes it did not work. I have learned, and try to buy out of season only for essentials, replacements, or HEWIs that I carefully vet. I got a great deal on a HEWI camel coat earlier this year, but only got to wear it once.

Recent purchases that got tags ripped off right away were loungewear pieces that filled a MAJOR wardrobe hole and 1:1 replacements for essentials and basics.

I used to do both, because of buying some things out of season- sweaters for example. And tailored workwear items I though I could predict I would wear often in the correct season. Or very occasionally buying a dressy/ special- occasion item that turned up unexpectedly and seemed to fit my style and likely occasions.

Now the combination of retirement and pandemic puts me way more focused on not only buying less, but buying a bit here and there in- season only. Usually there are still lots of sale prices plus much less “ need it right now”.
In addition, I don’t trust my feet! So not wanting to buy duplicates or backups there.
