Even if I mend it, and it's not on a seam so pretty much invisible, it's kind of ruined for me. Stains that won't come out are a no-go as well -- ruined unless I can wear as loungewear or put in my "cleaning out the garage" capsule.&nbsp;</p> <p>Fabrics on nice garments like blazers or trousers that get kind of shiny with wear or faded black garments also make their way into the donate bin. I do have a few tops that do better in the dryer because if I hang them to dry, they seem too big. Black items never go into the dryer, as I find that’s what fades black pants, tees, shorts and jeans the fastest. Heat is also hard on stretch things like athletic wear and elastic waists on running shorts.</p> <p>For shoes, I’ve been able to buy nail polish to touch up hot pink, mint green, silver and black patent leather shoes, and use regular polish often. I have several pairs available for every shoe purpose so I can rotate shoes to protect my feet from soreness and that probably contributes to shoe longevity. I can honestly say most of my shoes are discarded for going out of style before wearing out. </p> <p>Winter coats last me for years as I am diligent about washing them a few times during the winter so they stay fresh. The same goes for hats, scarves and gloves. I can’t think of recent coats that required dry cleaning. When I lived in a rental house in Las Vegas, my clothes got chewed through so quickly due to poor laundering conditions that I didn't have much control over -- extremely hard water (I would've invested in a whole-house water softening system if the house had been mine), an old washing machine with an agitator (love the HE front loader I have now!), and a tiny yard with intense sunlight and little-to-no shade depending on the time of year (line drying is great, but too much UV will break down most fibers over time).&nbsp;</p> <p>I don't have too much trouble with clothes wearing out more quickly than I expect. I wash as necessary -- usually every 2-3 wears and try to hang/air out between wears (trying to train DH to do the same, but it's an uphill battle!). Lingerie/delicates bags for things that need it, sweater stone for pills, avoid the dryer, lay knits flat to dry to avoid stretching them, treat stains as immediately as possible, store wool with cedar sachets to deter moths, wear an apron when cooking... I use various wash cycles, and appropriate soaps/solutions, turn garments inside out, and hang dry many things. DH does a lovely job with the ironing.</p> <p>Footwear gets sprayed for waterproofing as appropriate, and I'm very good at polishing (it was my first job as a kid at 10cents a pair for mom and dad). I've put sneakers through the wash (air dry) with success. I don't mind some scuff marks, but Magic Erase is good for removing the worst. A sharpie works great on black. I wipe down purses, belts, and dusty or salt stained footwear with baby wipes. </p> <p>Wearing an apron has saved a lot of clothes since oil stains from coolking splashes was probably the biggest culprit.</p> <p>I consider clothes 'worn out' when colours are faded (black that starts to look violet, knees that are shades lighter than the rest of the leg), or fabric has worn thin from friction (the seat area of pants, skirts, dresses) or a tear that I can't mend (I just recently repaired some pocket liners that had given way). However some signs of wear or distressing can add to the appeal of a garment. The silver is wearing off my sneakers and the grey canvas is showing, but they now look interestingly tarnished. I tend to dry clothing on hangers and prefer washing clothing to dry cleaning, but the exception is woollen clothing that is dry clean only.</p> <p>I refuse to wear anything that is stained or discoloured by under arm marks. I regularly update t-shirts and my white cotton shirts. I like my tops to look very pristine, so any wear and tear, and I will replace. Frankly, if I love a piece I’ll wear it often, which wears it out, but because I love it I don’t want to give it up. I’m sentimental like that. I have a large closet but most of it lasts for years. At times I think I probably take it a little too far but hey my aesthetic is RATE anyway. No judgement on others but i personally feel sad and wasteful when I have to discard items after one season/few wears. </p> <p>I know how to repair many small wear issues myself (e.g. stitch up busted seams, sew on buttons, etc) and otherwise spruce up older looking items. I go to the tailor for bigger things. </p> <p>I destroy shoes faster than anything else because I walk a lot, but I also get more attached to them than most other things because I have such fussy feet. So I try to spruce them up as best I can. Doc Martens wonder balsam is great at removing scuffs. Regular old shoe polish is useful too. And finally I have the cobbler replace heel plates all the time. The one thing that can’t be fixed, from experience, is when the internal structure of the shoe starts to deteriorate - I know this is happening when my arches start to collapse or when I start turning my ankle, and then there’s nothing to be done but say goodbye. </p>
