Isis-Thanks!

Ornella-You are quite right. When I started this process I figured I'd be done in a month or two tops. And here I am many months later. But a wardrobe is an evolving process, so is personal taste, and trends always change. The more I want to try new trends, the less of my existing wardrobe I'm going to want to keep from season to season. The number approach is right up my alley as an analytical thinker. (I also pre-plan my outfits the night before, I cannot handle creative thinking in the morning. tee hee) I've been thinking about adding a colored scarf or two, a handbag is a great idea! I have plenty of handbags, and they are all black, brown or grey (except one yellow summer bag). Or maybe even some statement jewelry. The jewelry I see in stores is quite colorful right now.

Lisa, fantastic analysis, I am currently summarizing my own findings too. What I've learnt, and that's probably the most important lesson, is that time that wardrobe overhaul requires is quite a tricky aspect to get my head around - you are also one year into your experiment, which is exactly the timeframe I found realistic to get to the point of really understanding the wardrobe positives and negatives.

I think you've achieved some fantastic goals, like having it all in numbers - you obviously need such approach to fine-tune the final aspects of what works (or not) and why, reducing everything to one closet and identifying that you were repeated shopper.

If it was me, I'd do what's already been suggested - add little pops of a new color for your palette in the form of item hat would be worn a lot, layering tee shirt or button-down or scarf, but maybe even blazer or handbag as you do wear them a lot and statement piece in a new color might help pull many outfits in a different way.

This is a really interesting and inspiring thread. The numbers are really informative, and I never thought about approaching my closet with that in mind. Food for thought! Thanks very much for posting!

Jonesy-Thanks! Great point. It's taken months for me to purge enough items without regret to fit my wardrobe into one closet. It could be a few more months before I can figure out how much to streamline my wardobe further AND still feel that I have options and be happy with it. I'm starting to notice, reds, greens and purples more so I'm thinking those are good colors to start adding into my closet, slowly.

Interesting thread! First off, I think you are being a bit hard on yourself :)! While I agree that your inventory is a fab thing to do, do you really *have* to get rid of everything, even if you love it and it's new, just because you haven't worn it too much? ETA: Not that I'm trying to sabotage your efforts or anything :)! I just wonder if, since you've moved everything into one closet now, and you have so much new, wearable stuff, if you couldn't approach your goal of having a smaller wardrobe more, uh, incrementally?

Another great thing is that, since blue, gray, and black are so neutral, you can essentially add any colors in that you want to! Are you drawn to reds, greens, yellows, what? I agree that a few spiced-up tops in some jazzy colors may be all you need to add lots of interest.

Good luck!

Aida-That's a great idea. One or two tops in a different color is probably all I need to mix up my wardrobe a bit. I like the wine color idea a lot. Thanks!

Lisa, if a lot of your toppers are similarly colored AND in your smaller color palette, I think you may want to expand your color selection in your layering tops. If you got, say, a gingham top or sweater a totally new color it would work with all your neutral toppers, and very likely all the blue ones as well in ADDITION to also being layerable with your current items. One colorful pant in a different color could also really open up new options for you; based on your photos above, maybe wine colored?

Kate-Great idea! Pops of color is just what I need. I'm suspecting I had that in the back of my mind when I purchased the fuchsia blazer you linked too. I probably purchased on a random day after wearing the same color top/blazer for the nth day in a row. I saw the brighter color and grabbed it. And this became a wardrobe workhorse in the summer months for me. I wore the blazer last week, as my first attempt to layer in cooler weather. And I was already cold. The blazer is a thin material and does not have a lot of room for bulky layering. I do not think it will be warm enough for our cold winters. Unless I can find a way to layer underneath it with a very warm and very thin layer. I'll have to try some outfits out as the weather continues to cool.

I think I need to stick to the same types of items for colors as you have done. Tops, cardigans and scarves are an easy fix to add color and print (and therefore interest) to my outfits. Perhaps I am being too closed minded in my analysis of the colors in my wardrobe. I do have a big scarf collection with few scarves that are solids. Before I go off and running to a store randomly purchasing brightly colored sweaters and trousers, I need to take another look at the colors in my wardrobe compared to my scarves. Plus, adding a new scarf or two would be a lot easier on my wallet and my closet space.

And it is nice to hear about someone else having a one or two color heavy wardrobe. :)

Katja-Interesting observation. When I look at some of the items in my "to donate" bag, I notice a number of the pieces are in the bag because they do not coordinate well with my main wardrobe. I would randomly purchase a colored item without considering my basic wardrobe colors. Thanks for bringing this up, it's something I have to keep in mind when shopping. It's not just if the color is flattering on me, and if I like the color, it also have to play well with the others in my closet.

Elpgal-Thanks! I'm going to take a look at some colorwheels. Great idea! I think I need to learn what colors work well with others for more focused shopping.

Carole-Thanks! One culprit of mine that lead to my over sized wardrobe, was lunchtime shopping. I work close to a mall and it is too easy to "kill some time" with browsing the stores. I switched to walking around the office buildings on my lunch instead but when the weather is poor, I feel as if the only place to go is the mall. A bad habit of mine.

Elly-Thanks for sharing! One thing I've noticed, I don't mind wearing the same outfits on back to back weeks, as long as one of the weeks I wore the outfit to work and another I wore the outfit on the weekend. For work, I feel I need a two week variety of tops and toppers (cardigans or blazers or sweaters). For bottoms I don't mind repeating the same 7 every week. This realization has helped me figure out a) that I don't need two separate wardrobes, I can wear my "work outfits" on the weekends too. This really helps me streamline my closet. Of course, it also helps that I can wear jeans to work everyday, if I had to wear suits, this plan would not work as well. And b) my personal preference is a two week rotation, for what ever reason this is the number that makes me feel like I have "enough" variety. My alarms were going off once I started to run the numbers and I realized I have far MORE than the two week amount.

Heather-Gosh, thanks! *blushing*

Great thread---- I am thinking about the same things when it comes to my wardrobe, but perhaps in different ways.

1)-- color. I am trying to fight my tendency to be a one-color wonder (say no to the 7th teal shirt-- fights imaginary personal color replicating demons) without ending up with a wardrobe that is huge because I need similar pieces in different colors so they can work with other pieces. I also tend to like color combos found in nature commonly in the landscapes I grew up in (and not other combos on me, personally) but actually am not a earthy dresser.

2)-- Number of items/number of wears--- I am actually one of those people that has zero problem wearing the same pair of jeans, pants, or topper 2x a work week. That means I only need 3-4 work bottoms and 3-4 work toppers. I like to have more top variety, since I wear tops once and wash them after every wear, so I need at least 6 work tops. I am ok with wearing the same top 2 weeks in a row so long as it is a top I wear with a scarf/necklace one week and with a jacket (or two different jackets) the next. I prefer to have a few extra work tops though, because variety is nice and when things die no one likes to have to change your laundry schedule to avoid indecent exposure or BO at work. Honestly, I could wear my smart casual wardrobe to everything in my life except a few super casual and gear events and the occasional truly dressy thing. Obviously I would have to up my numbers slightly to avoid the same indecent exposure/BO problem. However, I do get stuck in the trap of having too many different things I am involved with in my life (even if they are all technically smart casual) and wanting to have a "perfect/ideal outfit" or two for each of them or thinking that there are tons of different types of smart casual and I need a little of everything. That and the trap of needing to distinguish work clothes from family events from girlfriend outfits from date nights when they all are smart casual events. I have to decide if I really need a top I only wear for dates/going out if I only do it 0-2 times a month (and obviously if you go on multiple dates with the same person, you probably don't want to wear the same top multiple times in a row). Sometimes the answer is no, and other times I avoid going out because I have "nothing to wear."

The other numbers issue I hit is clothing changes per day--- Unless I am home or wear casual or gear all day, I change clothing several times in a day. Part of it is my insane need for differentiation between regular clothing and "fun" clothing. The other part is practical. I wear clean work clothes to work everyday for obvious reasons, I work out after work and shower then. I like to put on clean clothes after that, so if I am going somewhere I need to have 2 sets of "public/smart casual" clothes a day. Even when I don't work out/go out afterwords, I tend to put on a separate set of casual clothing at home since I have dogs and cook and am in the yard alot. Now sometimes I can wear the second set of clothing again for the same purpose, but often it is done for the week because there are no more occasions to wear it for that week or week and a half or because they get dirty/smell like mexican food/end up pressed up against my muddy truck, ect. Either I have considerably more "blanket" smart casual and casual clothes, or I have a minimum number of work and casual clothes and separate social/errand clothes. Then you start to wonder if everyone notices that you wear the same pink blouse every other dinner out.

I think that is just part of the dilemma of living where I do. Somehow I feel the need to have "work smart-casual" and "social smart-casual" and "going to a ball-game casual" and "going to the bar casual". I get stuck wanting to dress with a different purpose and portraying something different about myself at each location.

Either way, because it isn't unheard of to wear 2 outfits a day several days a week and some weeks I need more smart casual outfits and some weeks I need more casual outfits I find myself needing about 40-50 clothing items optimally. The difference is that those clothing items usually don't last me an entire two weeks.

Figuring out the mix is what is kicking my butt.

Wow, I'm so impressed with your ability to analyze your closet. I can see how going through this process would really make you more accountable for the wardrobe you are assembling. I relate to banishing random only shopping. I'm trying to be more thoughtful and purposeful in my shopping, but it is a hard habit to break. I will watch your posts with great interest, your closet is looking very pretty btw.

Is there any way to layer it and get some more use out of it? And what about the pink sweater?

Ooo, and the scarf is lovely (so is the top) in #4 (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-by-amyreh)!

I recently inventoried my closet and realized that I have very few colors as well, but my reaction was completely different. I was so happy to find out what my colors were, and found that a lot of times if I wasn't wearing an item, it was because it was some OTHER color that didn't go with any of my base colors (black, grey, green, mauve). Luckily most of those things are short-lived knits, but they are gradually making their way into the Goodwill bag.

Lisa, it sounds like it might be time to shop for some pops of color! Just a couple scarves or tops will make a HUGE difference!

If it's any consolation, my wardrobe (clothes, accessories, and shoes) consists of 23 brown items, 19 tan items, 6 black, 6 dark denim, and a cream and a gray. That's a total of 56 neutrals. My total of colors is 42 items (and more than a third of those are green!) Most of my colors are tops, cardigans, dresses, and scarves.

The numbers really are eye-opening. I will buy investment pieces and think to myself that I love them enough to wear them every week, which makes the worth the expense. But I can't expect myself to wear items that frequently when they are competing with everything else in my wardrobe!

Kate-You have some great insight, thanks! For colors, I am overloaded with very few colors in my closet. My dominant wardrobe colors are: blue, grey, and black. I noticed for grey for the winter, I have 7 toppers, all in grey! 3 blazers (one light grey schoolboy style, one mid grey boyfriend style, one dark grey corduroy style), 1 light grey boyfriend style cardigan, and 3 grey sweaters (one light grey crewneck, one charcoal crewneck, one charcoal tunic). And once I'm done with a week of only grey for the top half, I can add 3 more days with the bottoms, 2 grey skirts (both light grey, one wool, one corduroy) and 1 grey trousers. Blue and black are similar ideas. The styles for the black vary and the colors and styles for the blues vary, but it's still the same color family. It's no wonder I get bored with my clothes and want to shop.

What I am missing, are colors that coordinate with blue, grey and black that are not blue, grey and black. Even with my WIW posts I notice the same color scheme again and again.

The goal for repeats for the month is to wear the items twice a month. Right now I can go 23 days before repeating when using the above numbers for "toppers" for winter wear which consists of: 8 blazers, 9 sweaters and 6 cardigans. This means in 3 months time, with a 30 day average I'm only wearing items ~4 times in a season! To have enough for twice a month, I need 15 items. So I still need to purge 8 "toppers." The dilemma I have right now is how to continue purging items in good condition. Purge items unworn after 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months? Strive to wear items twice in a month and purge the unworn items after a month? Purge items unworn twice in a season (ie after 3 months)? Your numbers are VERY helpful. I have a long way to go just to get under 100 items in my wardrobe, which is closer to 183 (although I do not have a seasonal breakout for this number). I'm not sure this is a correct estimate, but if I said half of my wardrobe was fall/winter appropriate, then I have to cut ~92 items down to 57, or donate/discard/wear out 35 more items.

Mo-This gets really eye opening when you start running the numbers doesn't it. 15 tops doesn't seem like a lot, until you realize with 15 you are only wearing them twice a month. And for me, with a 3 month season, that is only 6 times a season! I'm starting to realize in the future I need to think about the seasonality of a piece before I purchase it.

Items such as jeans, that I can wear year round, will quickly get a low cost per wear, even when they are premium denim prices. If I only wore a pair of jeans twice a month, for an entire year I've worn them 24 times and whittled a $200 pair of jeans down to $8 per wear. If I wore them once a week, I'd wear them 52 times and whittle the same $200 pair of jeans down to $4 per wear!

For season specific items, I need to tread carefully. For my white bootcut jeans, I only wear them during late spring (when I can find a non rainy day) and the summer months. Let's say this is 4 months out of the year. I try to wear them every other week during their "season." This means during 16 weeks of their "season" I'm only wearing the white jeans 8 times a year! Oh boy!

Thanks for sharing this process! I am not organized enough to do the nitty gritty of counting every day I wear something but I did do the hanger trick and it was quite helpful. I have similar numbers to you - roughly 15 of items give or take - and also know I have plenty of clothes and don't need more. I have an opposing problem to you, in always wanting something in every color. Cropped blazer - great! Now let's get a black one, a blue one, a purple one, brown, green, white. I have all of the aforementioned and love them, but yes, it's overkill. Learning to remix more effectively is our answer. But it's not an easy overnight thing to learn, at least not for me! But just taking the time to really try and work with your wardrobe is an awesome start.

Oh, and Kate, I just recently thought through that 15 in each type of top (tank, ss, ls) means I don't have to repeat a top more than twice a month for, say a 4 month season. That means 8 wears each year, per top, on average. I figured some tops only last a season, but some 3 or more. At this rate, I can actually wear out my clothing rather than have to purge due to going out of style. Revelation!!

You're making some wonderful progress!

In terms of colors, I'm curious if there are colors that are completely missing from your closet (that you want in there, and are flattering) or if you just aren't cycling through different colors as frequently as you want? Whenever I find myself wanting more of a certain color, I try to take stock of what I have. I keep thinking I need more mustard items, for example, and then I realize I already have 8 mustard items in my wardrobe! That means I could wear one every 4 days for a month without repeating, or reasonably wear mustard every other day with only moderate repeating! The problem isn't that I need more mustard colored items, it's that I need to wear them more often (or, sometimes, I don't love the items I have enough to adequately repeat them, which means they need to be replaced).

Also, I'm curious what your goal is for number of repeats per month. Once I realized that simple math dictated the relationship between the number of items I own and how often they get worn (assuming even wear), I started to realize just how little I needed if I was ok with wearing the same items twice a month. Obviously the seasons come into play, since many items can't be worn year-round, but excluding my summer only clothes I have 13 bottoms, 8 dresses, 15 layers, and 21 tops. The reality (again, assuming even wear) is that I'll wear my layers twice a month, my bottoms and dresses cycle through once every three weeks, and my tops only once a month (because when I wear dresses I don't need tops). Of course some items get worn a lot more than others, which means I do have items that are still getting worn less than once per month, even with only 57 items of clothing!

Lyn*-I would be very curious to hear about your experience if you try this!

Suz-Thanks! I've tried to group the items in my closet by type (blazers, shirts, blouses, etc) and then by color. It wasn't until I did this that I realized I have so many repeats (two black cardigans, three grey blazers, etc). All the summer items that I do not see me wearing in cooler months, even if I layered are stacked with the hangers so three or four pieces take up one spot. Thank goodness for stacking hangers!

Fruitful-I have not heard of Julie Morgenstern before, but I'll check her out, thanks!

I read your post with interest. I love how you are being honest with yourself, i.e. allowing yourself freedom purchases as well as focusing on a planned list.

Have you read any Julie Morgenstern? Your organising strategies seem very good and a bit like hers.

I really need to do what you're doing :). Well done.

Wow. This is a great thread, Lisa. It is fascinating to me. I am in awe of your closet (both its size and its organization; may not feel organized to you, but I can tell you are really getting there, and it can't be easy when you have many things.) Fantastic effort, and I feel sure it is going to pay style dividends for you down the line.

Whoa; this is a really good challenge and I applaud you for doing it - and your closet is so tidy!

I think I may try this next; I'm sure a good # of my clothes don't get worn.

Hi,

I haven't done a check-in in a LONG time, although I never stopped tracking my clothing both for number of items and number of times items are worn. To refresh/recap, this project to "wear everything in my wardrobe twice" got started when I first saw Kate's thread here.

At this time, the numbers are still quite high and I have a long way to go until I have the more streamlined, minimalized, mixing friendly wardrobe where I really do wear everything twice. In reality, I'm probably look at another year at least! My biggest culprit is NOT shopping. Which is something far easier for me to say than to do. As evident by my latest attempt and failure with the current SYC going on here.

The good so far:

I've learned that I really do not need a lot of clothes. And I have a lot, I'm actually embarrassed by how much I have. Also I am very heavy with the number of items yet very few colors in my wardrobe which makes remixing a challenge. Even if the items are different, the color schemes are the same or quite similar day to day. Which leaves me bored, and wanting something new!

I have managed to put ALL my clothes into ONE closet. It was a foreign idea to me that someone living in a 4 season climate could keep all their clothes in one closet. Thanks to YLF and hearing about the closets of others they are all in there now. This was a big milestone for me. Slow purging and tracking what I wear helped me get my clothes down in volume enough to fit into one closet. So did some determination to force everything in there so I can see just how much I really do have. Now, when I see a grey blazer I want in the store, I think back to the 3 I already have at home. When my clothes were split up, it really was "out of sight, out of mind" and I was repeat purchasing!

I've started creating a season "wish list" based on what I see I wear a lot of and need to replace at the end of a season as well as what holes I have preventing me from wearing some items. I have a number of pieces that I like but am not wearing because I am missing a "piece" to complete the outfit or haven't figured out how to wear yet.

The bad so far:

The obvious, that I have too many clothes. And too many clothes in the same colors. I have to stop myself mentally from running out and purchasing lots of colored items to shake up my wardrobe. I am writing down specific items AND colors on my wish list for more focused shopping. I don't plan to shop only with a list, I think a small amount of freedom when shopping is fine. But the "random only" shopping of the past has got to go!

My purging habit has stalled, every time the seasons change, I have to start over with what I am wearing and how often. This does show me how little I wear season to season.

I haven't quite gotten the hang of a strict "one in, one out" policy yet. And while I am purging, it's still in smaller doses. To prevent the shock to my system, I keep putting items in a "hidden holding zone" that gets donated at the end of the season.

I'm only wearing most items in a season about once a month, I have not made the jump to twice a month yet.

Onto the numbers.

Blazers 11

Button Down Shirts and Blouses (blouses is a new addition to this category) 12

Sweaters/Thermals I can Layer (all thermals as tops have been purged) 13

Sweaters (that are toppers, cannot layer something over them) 9 (recently purged a few)

Cardigans 15 (I notice at least half are worn in the warmer months only)

Jeans and Trousers (trousers are a new addition to this category) 17

Skirts and Shorts (shorts are a new addition to this category) 9 (two are a recent "SYC broken" purchases but do fill a "skirt for the winter" wardrobe hole)

Dresses 12 (I am noticing many of my dresses are hard to layer, mostly due to sleeve details that create bumps underneath cardigans and make blazers too tight to layer with)

Scarves 18

LS T's (also used for layering, when the sweaters above are too big to layer with) 15 (I anticipate that this will go down by half after the winter season either from wearing out or purging unworn items)

Belts 14

Vests 0 (I'm not a big vest fan for myself, this category was deleted)

Short Sleeve T-Shirts (a new category after the summer) 13

Short Sleeve Tops (a new category after the summer) 25 (and I even purged a bunch, I had more than a months worth!)

So where do I go from here? Well at this point, I'm 10 months into this project and going back into the fall/winter season. I started this project in the winter months (January) and there is no excuse for me to not purge items left unworn at the end of this coming winter season. I'm not at the point to purge items at the end of a one month period, especially since I have a few months where I jump a lot with temperature (example, Sept we had 90F days AND 65F days). But I can certainly purge unworn items at the end of the season.

And for some real accountability, some photos of my overpacked, but all in one closet of clothes are attached. Hubby has a portion of the closet mostly not shown on the left. I have the back and the right side. The only really organized section, is my jeans/trousers.

Thanks for reading!
