Kate-I had to stop and count, I didn't even realize I purged 40 items! And here I thought I wasn't making any progress. *laughing* There were no toppers I wore more than twice (this included layers, blazers, sweaters, cardigans). Bottoms, there were quite a few worn more than twice, in fact one pair of skinny cords I wore 5 times! I was surprised to see how often I am wearing the same pair!

Mac-Thanks! I did not find purging my closet easy to do in the past, but now I am starting some momentum.

Becky-I'm a tad embarrassed that I have spent so much money, time and closet space on clothes I am not even using. Now that is not very environmentally friendly of me.

Angie-You literally "hit the nail on the head" and I concur. It is becoming easier to streamline as I firm up my style. And I'm having less deer in headlights mornings when I get ready too. :)

Inge-You are right, I am finding breaking this up with a plan is going far easier than my past attempts to force myself to purge. Then I would just dig my heels in.

I really love the idea of doing little purges on a regular basis, Lisa, that seems so much more manageable, and it also means you 'force' yourself to consider more often what still works or doesn't work for you anymore. Sounds like a plan to me;-)

And you're off to a marvelous start. Thanks for sharing your insights with us!

You are going like a Boeing, Lisa. As you fine tune your style, purging will become easier. As Becky says - you are off to a great start!

You're off to a great start, Lisa! I find purging very liberating. For me, purging has mainly been getting rid of items that are dated and/or ill-fitting. If money and shopping time/opportunity were unlimited, I'd love to replace some of the items in my closet which I do wear but which I don't really love.

This is very exciting! i look forward to reading more about your purging (I'm terrible at giving away my clothes, so i'll have to live through your experiences, vicariously).

Wow, I think you're off to a great start! It might not be a giant purge all at once, but getting 40+ items out over the course of a month is huge, especially now that you're certain that you don't need them! I remember when I started looking at some items and thinking "I don't even want to wear this once, let alone twice!" and it was so liberating to just let it go and focus on the clothes I really do like and want to wear. Out of curiosity, were there any items that you wore more than twice in January?

I'm thrilled that I was able to provide some inspiration, and I can't wait to hear how February goes!

Hi,

I was really inspired by Kate's wear everything twice challenge and I enjoy lists and numbers. Read about her experiences on month 1, and then month 2 here, with month 3 hereand the finale here. I think that's all of them.

I decided to couple my own challenge with SYC. My goal is to once and for all purge my closet and keep my wardrobe manageable and functional. I do little purges here and there but one massive purge is just more than I can bear it seems. Plus I live in a 4 season climate which drives me batty, there is no way I can layer certain spring/summer items right now, just as there is no comfortable way to layer my cold weather items in the hotter months.

But I like to shop and my overflowing closets and drawers are testament to that fact.

So month 1 was about getting a handle on my cold weather gear. I tallied up items that I can and should be wearing right now and here's what I came up with, I even started doing some purging.

Blazers 15 to 9
Button Down Shirts 6 to 6
Sweaters/Thermals I can Layer 27 to 21
Sweaters (that are toppers, cannot layer something over them) 12 to 8
Cardigans 11 to 8
Jeans 17 to 14
Skirts 2 to 2
Dresses 11 to 9
Scarves 20 to 15
LS T's (also used for layering, when the sweaters above are too big to layer with) 27 to 22
Belts 15 to 10
Vests 5 to 1

As far as wearing everything twice, in one month very few items were worn twice. I'm sad to say, there were many items I did not wear at all! This was an eye opener for me, and shows me, I really need to reign in the purchases and assess what I have. Just wasteful!

I am hoping for Feb, I can wear items twice now. At least between Jan and Feb. Anything not worn twice between two months, can probably be donated at that point then. Feb should be interesting!

Ultimately my wardrobe will have me wearing most things twice a month and fewer items that are seasonally based which sit for half a year unworn. Although certain items such as my white jeans or white blazer, I feel would look odd to wear right now.

Thanks for reading!
