I read this and thought I should try it..then realized I really DONT want to wear many of the items I have, so its time for another closet cleanout! But Im hesitant to do it right now until my hair is finally fixed, cuz everything looks bad to me when my hair looks bad. Does anyone else find their hair greatly influences how they feel about their clothing?

I like the idea of this challenge. I think for many of us, it would be a good reminder of how much great stuff we've really got.

Personally, it would take me forever to complete this challenge. I wear workout clothes all day, every day per my job. The only time I ever really get dressed is on Friday nights and weekends, and even then, much of my social life revolves around going to the gym, hiking and camping.

I probably have no business buying anything new most of the time, but sometimes a new trend or style comes out that I just can't resist. The key for me is to keep the purchases small!

This is all food for thought. I am excited to shop right now because I am starting to get a handle on my "style." If I only wore what I currently own I would not be happy because I don't like a lot of what I currently own. I'm enjoying experimenting right now and trying new things. I don't have a huge wardrobe to start with, but I still can see where I could edit more. It's a process!

I am asked this question a lot and I find it really hard to answer. I simply can’t generalize which is why I have never written a blog post on the topic. It not only depends on your lifestyle, but also on your preferences AND on how bored you get with what you have. I have clients who do fine with 5 pairs of slacks and others who need 20. I spend just as much time convincing people that they need more, as I do convincing them that they need fewer items. Sorry that I cannot be of more assistance. But I’m happy helping you specifically, Bella.

Bella - I read general guidelines for a work wardrobe somewhere...6 bottoms with 2 tops to go with each. That could include anything from jeans, skirts, or trousers paired with sweaters or jackets. This gets you through 12 work days which means no outfit repeats for over 2 weeks. I'm not organized enough to try this yet! I'm wondering if Angie has any guidelines.

I really like the spirit of this challenge. The tactic is too rigid to me, but I embrace the philosophy of trying to get more use out of your existing wardrobe before going crazy on acquiring new pieces. I've been doing this to some extent lately, looking through my closet to identify pieces I haven't worn much or at all in the past few months, and coming up with new combinations. It's been a good experience; I've already worn and planned outfits that use "old" pieces in new ways. It's fun. It also helps me figure out which items to weed out and consign or put aside for the clothes swap.
It forces the "keep or toss" issue. If I have something I haven't worn in a year, and I still cannot come up with an outfit that I want to wear right now, then it's probably a toss. But since I do try out creative things before making that decision (I have a very hard time tossing things!!) I resurrect some items from that fate. So it's a win/win.

Hm, I do find cheap knits don't always drape as well and are often made of uncomfortable mystery fabric. More expensive knits also feel more substantial and less clingy and I'll-fitting. I get most of them on sale though. It just makes me sad that I will probably never have any beautiful investment tops in my wardrobe.

Angie, when it comes to wardrobe size, I was wondering, how small is too small and how big is too big? I know it depends mostly on lifestyle of the person, but could you give an average estimate for someone, say working 5 days a week in a smart casual office?

Maybe others would like to chime in: How many jeans/ casual pants/sweaters/ shirts/knit tops do you own? I will count mine when I get home tonight.

Yay! It’s music to my ears that you want a SMALL closet with fewer clothes (and shoes I might add). This is the best way to go. I cannot stress that point enough.

(Actually, I don’t think any knits are worth spending a lot of money on – fancy or basic).

It is very interesting to read all your responses. Joy, you are absolutely right, this is a good time update your wardrobe without breaking the bank. However I, like Emily, I don't really "need" anything for now. I have a really small wardrobe ( I have very limited closet space and I don't like to own too many clothes overall like Shiny) and this seems like a good challenge to keep wearing things in my closet interesting. I kind of want to try if I can do it.

I read about this challenge also, and I think it's a great idea. I've also put myself on a shopping ban since January 1st - so far, so good.

I think this is a good time for this challenge because I really don't "need" anything more for winter and I have several things I would like to purchase for spring/summer (a petite trench coat long enough for skirts but not too long, walking shorts and "everyday" sandals), so I can save up for them without adding another unnecessary sweater/scarf/you-name-it to my wardrobe.

I can understand that. I really wear those layering pieces to death and have started hand washing a couple of favorites in order to keep them longer. I usually replace them late in the season when I can get them 75%-90% off and buy the best quality I can find. What I can't find then I buy at Target. This season I've really loved Target's tissue weight t-necks and wear them as I would a cami in warmer weather under shirts, Sweet Pea tops, cardies, etc.
So I wear the more stylish pieces on top.

I recall Angie's comments, but knits are all I wear. Wovens fit poorly on my busty frame and just don't look as good. Getting all my tops from target or even h&m would be a huge bummer. I probably wear my knits well past their expiration date but when I really like a top I can't just toss it after 6 months.

Bella, I did this at the end of last summer, and intend to do it again before winter ends.

Last summer, I ended up with a few new favorites. The only reason I hadn't worn these items was more a matter of needing to work up the guts to wear a new style, than the item not working. There was only one or two items that just didn't work that got culled out.

I'm like Maya - though I do have statement pieces, I don't have a ton of clothes, nor do I want a ton of clothes. I want every item to work and to fit well. So I'm constantly editing my closet. Also, I don't have a lot of space and I can't stand a closet that's so overpacked I have no idea what's in there. So it's easy for me to know which pieces haven't been worn yet.

Right now there is one sweater in particular that's mocking me..... I keep trying to wear it and it just never happens. And today I'm hoping to wear the only white collared shirt I own - I did wear it a few times last winter, but I've neglected it so far this winter. I'm inspired to bring it out after the recent thread discussion about collared shirts!

However, I do hold on to items that may not work this season, but are classic and may come back around in the future. I have one under-bed-box full of sweaters that fall into that category, mostly pastel sweaters that just don't seem right this season with all the jewel tones. I did go through it ruthlessly at beginning of winter and tossed out anything that's seen better days.

I have a lot of knit tops - most from BR - and have worn every single one numerous times already. That's one category that works overtime for me. Most look in good shape (I handwash and line dry my knits - the dryer is too hard on them) and will work next winter, except for one - the hem unraveled, but I think that is fixable.

Maya, I think I remember Angie saying that knit basics aren't worth spending much money on because they don't last. I find that need to replace knit layering pieces (turtlenecks, tees, or tanks/camis) every season, so I try to find them on deep clearance or at Target (their styles are often longer to work with pants). I get black, cream/white, and a couple of colors and toss them out when the season changes.

I probably already do it. I don't have nearly as many clothes as I think most people here do, partly because I can't and partly because I don't want to for that exact reason: When I find something I like, I just want to wear it all the time...not just once a month. If I had 24 pairs of jeans, even if they all fit well, I would feel compelled to shrink the collection down only to the ones I wore the most. I'm also more likely to buy things to replace other things. Right now I'm buying high rise jeans to replace all my low rise jeans, I want to buy new black and navy cardigans to replace my existing ones (which are years old and worn out), and last year I bought a new jacket to replace the one that won't close over my chest anymore.

This year I plan to buy a lot of dresses, which will be among the few truly new pieces I get. I don't have many existing dresses to replace. This is mostly a matter of practicality and comfort for me, though.

I guess in the end I rarely buy dramatic novelty items because I'm still not comfortable with my basics, and I don't have the budget to do both at once. I think when I'm older I might be able to be more flexible and have a more interesting wardrobe.

One problem I'm not sure how to resolve is that I constantly need to replenish my collection of knit tops because they wear out so quickly. I see no solution in sight to that, and it's a bummer because I have to focus a lot of my energy there. I wonder if I'll ever be able to constantly replenish my knits while also being able to afford some fun, dramatic pieces.

I'm not sure about the part about not buying anything until you finish the challenge since this is really the best time to save money on updating your wardrobe by shopping the sales before things get too picked over. However, the method of turning hangers, etc. sounds like an easy way to identify what isn't getting worn. I would try that.

I came across this wardrobe challenge in a blog post:

http://www.blogher.com/celebra.....-challenge

The blogger basically swore off shopping until she has worn every single thing that she currently owns.

"The rules are simple: there's NO shopping until you have worn EVERY seasonally appropriate piece you own. Move your summer clothes to the back, or to the guest room; put any black tie attire in storage (unless you're planning to go to a black tie function in the forseeable future). Make sure everything that is left -- work clothes and weekend clothes and after-five clothes -- fits you properly and is in good condition. Give yourself a week to take care of anything that needs to be mended or cleaned; if you can't manage to get it to the cleaners or the tailor in that window, really think about how functional that piece is.

When you're done going through your closet, put everything away. To help you keep track of what you've worn, turn all the hangers around, so that the open part of the hook is facing out; fold sweaters and put them on the shelf with the neck facing out. After you wear something, turn it around and put it back the normal way.

Alternatively, work your way from the front of your closet to the back; as you wear things, move them to the back of the closet and go on to the next piece. Or, if you prefer, keep a list. The system doesn't matter, as long as you're wearing EVERYTHING."

One of my new year resolutions is to buy fewer items of clothing and I haven't bought anything in the new year. I think this could be a fun challenge to help me wear the things I already own more creatively. It could also be a good way to help sort out one's clothing. If you realize that you can't find a way (or have no desire) to wear a piece of clothing no matter how hard you try, perhaps it is time to part with it!

What do you think of this such a challenge? Do you think you could do it?
