Joy I echo Jaime's comments -- suggest starting a thread for advice on paring down. Partly because there are many others who will be much better able to guide you than I am! My best to you and your family members who are negotiating health challenges and life transitions.

Jaime, that's good advice. Fit is really an underappreciated aspect of achieving that look of intentionality, isn't it? Especially for us thrifters, who usually encounter only ONE size of an item available and can be very tempted to force it to work!

Well of course I read to the end! I love this stuff . Anyway, the focus on fit as your body has changed is probably the first priority - especially since you want to focus on silhouette and create intentionality with your looks. I actually have found it interesting to read menswear info on fit, which is often more precise than womenswear info. I am looking forward to the outfits!

@Joy - I just read your comment. I think you should start a new thread so everyone can offer you advice.

Urban snow queen, what a great moniker, I too have lost weight to the point that nothing fits. I have become XS and can order some from Chicos. My sisters

husband died of Covid and she is about ready to move to a senior apartment. What advice do upon have cutting way back on clothing living in a four season area? I wonder what she will wear. She still needs coats and warm clothes. My own husband is an open heart patient, doing ok so far but either of us could have a stroke any time. What advice do you have cutting back....way back....with wardrobe items?

Thanks for your nice comments, all!

Suz, oh I like your mention of Nordic Noir. You are always giving me such useful phrases, you wordsmith you! Also, yes re: mixing registers. It strikes me that this kind of high-low, casual-dressy juxtaposition is very much a part of modern style and has been for a while. For a person who likes vintage jewelry, old-school fair isles, etc., mixing registers can be a reliable way to add an element of "current" to an ensemble -- I suspect I rely on it more than I even realize.

Brooklyn good point re images. I will try to pull something together this weekend and maybe attach to a daily outfit post. I have a feeling that it will be something like: "ok, imagine this image somehow melded together with this other very different one," rather than any particular image capturing what I have in mind...

kkards you know I think I probably absorbed the idea of the importance of reflecting from your challenge, so thank you! And how funny that you were having the same thoughts about texture etc. right as I was articulating them!

Dee, absolutely yes to outfits needing to feel right, not just look good to others -- and how that depends on our personalities.

Star, Sal, JenniNZ, Lisa -- thank you for your encouraging words!

Oh what fab moniker, I had recently done a couple of posts on words for a style descriptor which the forum helped me work out but a style moniker has still eluded me.
Interesting about wanting the extra edge for this nordic theme. I feel our own personalities have a strong influence on whether an outfit that LOOKS perfectly fine to everyone else actually FEELS like us in the end. Perhaps that edge helps you feel grounded in that outfit. Anyways, that's just my own personal ponderings Looking forward to seeing your style moniker in action.

Urban Snow Queen

What an intriguing moniker. I’ve got visions of layers, and lights fading into darks. Looking forward to seeing how you interpret it

As I was reading your thoughts on monochrome outfits, my 1st reaction was SarahD8 should play with texture, and then 2 sentences later, you said them same, but also juxtaposition. And I think both of these are excellent ways to help an outfit feel intentional.

I love the idea of a defined capsule and insuring that everything gets wore. But more importantly, at least for me, is the process of putting time into putting an outfit together and than the process of thinking about what worked and what did not. Worked of course is subjective, and that’s where for me the reflection piece of the challenge becomes the focus. This January most probably the most reflective challenge I’ve done, and it was so helpful. Anyway looking forward to what you create, and what you conclude

Being a fellow over analyser, I read the whole post. However, I am also a very visual person so I would love to see some images of what you have in mind for Urban Snow Queen. Even if it’s an arty image, as opposed to a fashion image. Inquiring minds want to know :)

For me, “Snow Queen” conjures up images of winter white and (fake) fur. Dr Zhivago winter glam. But I suspect you are using “urban” as a modifier to Snow Queen, to suggest adding some grunge or maybe modernity?

Anyhow, I am hooked and looking forward to seeing more!

Fun, Sarah! I like Urban Snow Queen as a moniker. And I think. it makes sense that you want or even need a bit of edge or maybe nordic noir to your winter style.

I really like your observation that a mix in registers can be a version of "contrast" just as much as a mix of colours or patterns or textures. Of course sometimes a mix in textures provides that mix in registers -- velvet with denim, say.

For me, mixing registers has been liberating and a key to a style that feels authentic and if I'm really paying attention it is the key to all the outfits that make me happiest. I don't always remember that when I am getting dressed but I should!

An excellent and detailed analysis of where you want to go with your style. Doing a challenge to essentially test out your style moniker and see how it makes you feel (ie is this really the direction you want to go in) before you do a large closet edit is a brilliant idea.

Urban Snow Queen sounds lovely and I look forward to the outfits from the challenge!

A couple of months ago I posted about feeling like I was in the midst of a style shift. Was I interested in monochrome or monochrome-ish dressing, I wondered? This touched off a really interesting round of experiments with monochrome outfits for many forum members which was so fun to watch unfold…if distantly, because I promptly got absolutely bonkers busy and had no bandwidth for style! And when I did get a moment to cogitate on it all my thoughts veered off in several different and contradictory directions.

Here I am now to try to make sense of them, and to set myself a challenge for the coming weeks to help me take the next steps.

A style shift is not the same as a style revolution. I often feel dissatisfied with outfits that are typical of what I’ve been wearing for a while. But I still like many individual clothing items that have been staples in the past. I think I just want to wear them in a different way? And I think my core aesthetic is still there, even if I want to hone it or direct it in a slightly different or more specific direction.

Let me try to explain.

For a while now I’ve organized my deep winter wardrobe around the idea of a snowy birch forest and the Northern lights: shades of black, white, and gray; light to medium blue; ballet pink and burgundy; icy aqua and a little bit of bluish teal; pale lavender and dusty plum. Cognac footwear, abalone jewelry.

That still really resonates with me, but I’ve realized that I also like a bit of a tough vibe in deep winter: column of darks, raw-hem charcoal jeans, stompy boots. I would also like to add more amber jewelry and rough, irregular pearls.

This brings me to a persona for deep winter: Urban Snow Queen.

How to channel her?

I think the flirtation with monochrome was about wanting my outfits to be more elevated, refined, grown-up. Cohesive, somehow. But, as a gamine-ish type I need contrast and energy in my outfits. It’s easy to go for color contrast and put on a top of one color and pants of another, but this often feels slapdash, unfinished. I *think* what I want is to rely less on color contrast on this leg of my style journey and more on other forms of contrast (texture, or silhouette/shape — maybe this is the “drama” I’ve been banging on about, vaguely, for several years now, or register — dressy juxtaposed with casual etc.). Or, if color contrast, make sure the outfit also has intentionality and cohesiveness in other ways.

I think to feel more polished I also need to pay closer attention to fit. I lost some weight in late 2023 and early 2024, and initially I was just happy to be able to fit into a bunch of clothes that had been out of rotation. Now I’m realizing that some of these items are just, uh, kinda sloppy. So I really need to evaluate what fits *well* now, and put aside what doesn’t.

You can probably tell I don’t really have this all figured out yet, so I’m setting myself a “wear all the clothes” challenge.

The rules:

Define a capsule of potential Urban Snow Queen clothes. (Images below) This is basically everything in my wardrobe that fits the color palette and is seasonally appropriate. Some things will be more useful/on point than others.

Each day, wear an outfit that includes at least one item from this capsule I haven’t worn yet during the challenge.

Reflect on the outfit and on the new item — what did I like/not like, how does it align with my (as yet poorly articulated) style goals (and hopefully help me to articulate them)?

Repeat until all clothes in the capsule have been worn.

I can repeat already worn items, on any cadence/time scale. The only requirement is that each day’s outfit includes at least one not-yet-worn item.

Notice which items I wear first/last, which ones I tend to re-wear often, etc. Evaluate how items fit. What do I feel like my capsule is missing? Etc.

If you are still reading, gold star!! I will be back with the first outfit of the challenge tomorrow. But, as always I am grateful for any thoughts or suggestions you care to share!
