I’m very excited.</p> <p>Emily, it sounds like you had a really interesting and in depth experience in your village. We are flying on a 737 from Anchorage to Barrow, with a stop at Prudhoe Bay. We did fly in a tiny plane a few years ago from Juneau to Gustavus. I was sitting in front with the pilot and would have sworn we were going to scrape the peaks with the wings!!!</p> <p>It did sound too cold for mosquitos, but better to be prepared. We went to REI today and bought a number of things including head nets. If we don’t need them, so much the better! Other things we bought: fold back gloves, balaclavas, and heavy fleece long underwear. I’ve spent time in Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska- above the arctic circle but not as far north as Barrow. It’s breathtaking!!! I was a Seattleite at the time, which means I was comfortable wearing shorts when the temps were in the sixties. I wore long pants, a couple layers on top and a jacket and was fine. Some days I layered silk leggings under the jeans. But the mosquitoes were AWFUL. Swarms and swarms of them!!! I think it’s the damp tundra? I suggest you pack anything and everything that promises to protect from bugs. </p> <p>In winter I wore arctic gear- a giant bodysuit borrowed from an oil company. My eyelashes froze, but the rest of me was warm and comfortable. Now is the time to find the perfect winter hat. REI is starting to run sales on their winter gear; it will disappear soon from all retail. I just found one that has a windproof outer, fleece liner, and a brim to replace one almost identical that I lost.<div><br /></div><div>Flip-top mittens are great for using cameras and binocs. Neck gaiters are easier to manage sometimes over scarves. And chemical toe-warmers. There won’t be any dawn to dusk because the sun won’t be going down at all! </p> <p>I’m not sure if my Patagonia Vosque with its liner, with an additional jacket, such as a nanopuff, underneath would be enough, or if I should take my new EB lodge parka. It’s warmer, but I’m not sure how waterproof it is. I took the Vosque to Istanbul in winter a few years ago, and froze until I layered up with everything I had. I looked like a navy blue Michelin man. The Vosque is completely waterproof, though, and the liner is similar to a nanopuff. So, warm, but not really warm.</p> <p>As for footwear, I have a couple choices. Last year I bought some Santana Canada winter boots. They are warm and fairly walkable, unlike Sorels. I also have Bogs. We got them several years ago for a trip to Glacier Bay, AK. We made many trips from the boat to shore in a Zodiac, and had to wade a little bit. They are very clunky, but warm and waterproof. The choice here might not be mine. The tour company might require we bring tall waterproof boots. For that matter, they’ll probably advise us as to what to bring. I wanted to start thinking about it, though.</p> <p>I also have waterproof ski pants and several pairs of long underwear of various weights.</p> <p>I will definitely take pictures. My husband has the whole multi lens, multi camera kit.
