I took a look at the Countyman recently; its a contender for when I decide its time for a larger car. I want a third dachshund so might have to size up. Julie, the first car I ever fell in love with was a Mustang from the 60s. The car I had before the Mini was a Mustang, bought new in '94.

My first car was a burgandy 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix. My great uncle found it for me and drove it down from Michigan for me. I think I paid $500 for it. The interior was shot so my mom re-covered the seats. It had no air conditioning and a crummy radio, but I loved that car - I named her Phoenix. I only had her for a year because I couldn't have a car when I started college and I didn't think she'd do well sitting for two years. My next car was a giant blue conversion van, also brought from Michigan by my uncle, kind of a piece of junk (named her Bertha). I'd have to stop every so often to fill up the oil and check the gas. Then DH bought me a little Saturn sedan when we got engaged because the van worried him.

After the Saturn (which my SIL still has - over 120,000 miles on it and 10 years old), I had a Mini Cooper (pepper white with a black roof and a sunroof) that I adored. Jasper was my first manual and I so want another sometime. Unfortunately, we only had the Mini 6 months when we decided it needed to go because we were starting on babies and DH didn't think it was very safe. Then I had a Honda CR-v for awhile which I never really liked, probably because I had to give up my Mini for it.

I'm currently driving a charcoal grey Mazda5. It's definitely more gear than accessory, but I like it. I've had it longer than any other car I've ever owned - five years now. It's the closest thing I'll ever get to a mini van, I think. It's three rows, but only two seats in each and there's just a tiny bit of space behind the last row when it's in use and it's got sliding doors, but it's still small and low to the ground like a more sporty car. When I replace this one, I'll probably go smaller, like a Honda Fit or maybe a Mini Countryman.

A very practical 1996 Subaru Outback Impreza. It now has faded paint and plenty of dents from snow burms and the like. It's also closing in on 200,000 miles. The funny part is this is actually my BF's car and he is a manager at a car dealership lol. This year he finally bought a new Nissan truck but it took him 15 years bewteen cars. Go figure the guy who sells cars never buys 'em! (I had a Toyota Tercel wagon that I gave to a roommate when she needed to get to dialysis in the snow and then bought a 1991 Suzuki Sidekick off my stepmom. It sits in the garage mostly because it's a terrible snow car)

I drive a sporty little Honda Civic.
I love VW's and drove a Passat previously, but the car tried to kill me on several occasions, and the repair costs and parts were out of this world expensive.
My husband's Honda has 250K miles, so we decided to stick with what works best (for us).
I've always loved driving little cars, especially manuals. I like to feel like I'm actually DRIVING the car instead of the other way around.

1968 Mustang GT. Original 390 4 speed car but now has a 428CJ with a five speed. Painted Guardsman Blue with White stripes. My dad found the car for me when I was 15, and helped me buy it. I only had half the money needed. Then, for the next year we both worked on getting it restored. He told me, 16 or not, no license until the car was ready for the road. So, I worked extra shifts, odd jobs, and when I turned 16 he gave me the balance of the money needed to complete it. Along with the money, I got the warning about not driving like an idiot and if I did, he wasn't coming to get me out of jail. The day I passed my driving test, he announced that it was time to learn to drive a car for real and we both went to a performance driving school. Most fun I ever had over 2 weeks. Over the next several years, through high school and university, the car was always there, weather permitting of course. No salt on my baby. The car was a real hunk and cop magnet. I swear the local police had pre-printed tickets with all my particulars. Just fill in the charge and the speed.

It has no airbags, no anti-lock brakes, no stability control. You can steer it with the accelerator, and get rubber in all 5 gears, and I can fix practically anything that goes wrong with it. It's loud, in your face, and not at all easy on gas. So keep driving those hybrids and small cars, girls, my Mustang needs your gas.

First drive in the spring is always the best, and that's about a week away.

I am the queen of practical cars. I am on my third Toyota Prius and I LOVE it. Why three? The first one we ended up giving to my MIL because her car was on it's last legs, and the second one I took on a huge two-month cross-country road trip last year. When I got home, my husband saw that I'd put 10,000 miles on it and decided I "needed" a new one while the trade-in on the old one was still so high. Plus the new one has the solar sunroof, and he knew how much I loved having a sunroof.

Maybe in a few years I'll go for something sportier, but I have gotten seriously spoiled by 45mpg. I do a lot of driving around for my photography, and I prefer to be fairly low-key, since I sometimes end up in areas that might seem a little sketchy.

But then, those Teslas sure are cool!

Fun thread! I drive a 2005 Acura TSX in a vivd blue color. My parents got it for me when I was in high school and I plan to drive it forever (or as long as it will last me). It has very low mileage on it because I don't drive much so I think this car will be around for a looong time.

Aida, that 1970 Datsun is the most beautiful model ever. Love the shape. Our neighbors drive an impeccably restored blue one! Keep looking, you may find one of your own.

Isabella--I would sooo drive the wheels off that little red car!!!

I'd also have to have an earlier bug--one with the flatter headlights like your 65/66 Carole and Barbara.

Our license plate is PDQ VW---not "Pretty Darn Fast Volkswagen" but rather "Patty and Dave Quesnelle Volkswagen"---it could never be quick and that's what I'd tell the police.

My very first car was a 1965 VW bug, her name was "Karla ", her license plate # was KAR179. I can't believe I still remember that, it's the only license plate number I can remember and that was 37 years ago. It will always be my most favorite car I have owned. So fun to drive, simple, effecient and cute! I drive a Lexus hardtop convertable, it's my midlife crisis car!

Love the Bug and the Bug stories too! When I was growing up in Europe, I'd see a lot of those Volkswagons, cars surely looked much different back then!
I don't have my own car, I drive my hubby's, black Acura TL 2002, no stickers on it either, we do have a custom license plate VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars), my hubby is a Marine. I'd love to have an SUV, just because there is so much junk to haul with a toddler! Currently I have 2 strollers in the trunk, and a push car at the back seat, not counting toys, blankets, and other 'necessities', I'm always amazed at the amount of stuff when I take the car to the wash/vacuum.
Attached is the most popular car back in the days when I was growing up in Poland - they're rare now, but the car was so tiny, and had the engine at the back and the trunk at the front... They weren't safest either, just because of the size.

Ornela--if it's not a Ferrari it must be a Lamborghini!!!! They make tractors haha

Also coincidence after cheering yahoo it's back on the road---I noticed my bug has a gas leak today while on the road--stinky!!! I carry a fire extinguisher for this reason--they have a little history of catching on fire that way. I'll replace the tubing and filter tomorrow --then I'll be stinky!! Have to dive into my pre YLF pile o' clothes to get dirty in.
Love the car stories!! Love your cars!!!!!!!!!!!

The only decoration I have is a giant plush daisy in the kid compartment---ummmm parcel tray (Beth!).
I have 4/40 air conditionning--4 windows open/40 miles an hour! tee hee hee

The timing of this thread is spooky. Today (of all days!) as I got in my car on the way home from work I thought to myself "If only YLF gang could see me, they'd expel me this very minute". I've had my car for 6 years, it was bought in a rush one weekend as our main car was being replaced due to manufacturing problem and we needed something to get us form A to B in the following weeks.

Year after year I kept taking it to MOT only to have to pour so much money into fixing it that it made no sense to replace it as I'd never get any value back. So, I kept driving it, thinking "It's definitely going before the next road tax renewal/MOT, but this time *really definitely*".

There it still is, parked in front of the house.

Last year I finally said to the guy in garage that I'm driving it until it dies on me, I only really wanted to release all that mental energy wasted thinking "I should do something about it".

Guess what - I've had the best year with it so far - only one small fix.

It's Italian make, red, not yet vintage but getting there. I jokingly call it "My Ferrari". I like the look on people's faces when they actually believe for a split second that I do drive a Ferrari.

And every morning when he gets into his car seat on the way to work/nursery, my son calls it "our red tractor".

I'll leave it to you to guess which one of us is closer to the truth.

I drive a classic gorgeous red 1988 Alfa Romeo Spyder convertible, which I love driving with the top down. It has air conditioning for those hot summer days here in NC.

@Lynne: I drive a 2008 Mini Cooper convertible, color is Mellow Yellow (fab mustardy yellow). I have to say that this is the only car in my entire life that I have LOVED to drive. There is just something about other Mini drivers, too...so friendly and fun. I never quite understood how people could get attached to a car, but especially when I am driving with the top down, I always plan what I am wearing so the car and I look good together. Yikes, what a confession!

Nowadays to ferry the tonnes of ppl who visit us year around I drive a black Acura TL (the 2006 model, the new ones look blech). On days when it is freshly washed and it hasn't rained yet, it looks gorgeous with black interiors and exterior. Even when we have kids, DH and I have made a pact that we will have one impratical, fun car like a Mini Cooper or a Nissan 370Z or a sexy beaut like the 2010 Mustang.

I drive a small hatch back tomato red German accessory, which you have seen in a blog post.

Great car stories! I drive a Mercedes '03 C240 4Matic, like the one in photo #1 below but with more of a champagne color. It's half gear half accessory: small 4-door sedan, AWD, surefooted like a tank; but also has a sporty suspension, tight turn radius, and has lots of great little extras as one would expect from a Merc.

My most favorite car is the 1970 Fairlady Z/Datsun 240Z like the one in the second photo; hoping to find one for my birthday that I can restore but they're hard to find.

EDIT: No decorating for me! Classic and clean here. Hubby doesn't currently have a car, but has 2 motorcycles: 2010 BMW K1300 GT and a 2002 Ducati 748S. He sold his 1999 BMW Z3 Coupe to buy me my car+his Ducati

Patty, my college roommate drove a vintage VW much like yours. Back in those days, we once fit 8 (that's right, 8!) people in her car for a 40 minute drive back to campus. Several passengers were burly guys and I rode in the little rear space. :O

I drive a 6-speed Acura TSX. I love it. It's zippy and fun. If I have to go to work, I might as well get there as fast as I can. DH is always scolding, but he's the one with the most recent ticket:D

My daily car is a 2007 Mini Cooper. My husband and I love British cars, and used to have some, but reliability was a problem as was finding a good mechanic. I also have a 1987 Corvette, but don't drive it much any more.

I drive a Volkswagen Golf from 1997 in grass green. Well, I'm sure the colour has some fancy name, but that doesn't make it any more beautiful. I bought the car after I had an accident and needed a new car immediately. I have driven it for over 7 years now and I hope it keeps up for a bit though it makes funny noises and doesn't like the cold. However, I hope to drive it until my son doesn't need a stroller anymore. And THEN I'll get myself something really small and pretty. In a nice colour.

what a cute car!
(hanging my head in shame...) nothing stylish about my car. I drive a gold dodge caravan. And no, I don't "decorate." I am adamantly against bumper stickers of any kind. I tell my kids they can be honor student, student of the month, or the president of the US, but I'm not going to advertise the fact on my vehicle. :-)
sigh.. one of these days I'll be driving a stylin' car........ maybe.......

Oh gosh Patty! The carseats-- I don't think I will ever get used to them, it is going to be a shock for me if I become a mom. The regs and recommendations have changed so much since I was a kid, so it freaks me out when I see 8 year-olds in car seats and 13 year-olds in booster seats. Heck, I want to keep kids safe, but the new regs practically make a small female friend of mine "carseat legal." She is 4'10" and 90 pounds on a good day. Back when I was a kid I was pretty tall and big for my age, but the regs were so much different. I was 4 when I got out of mine for good and it wasn't long after that that I was tall enough for the front seats. But of course, we didn't have a car with airbags until I was 14. I'm sure it was even more of a shock for people the generation before me. My mom talks about how she used to ride around in the back of a vehicle with no seats, let alone seatbelts or carseats as a toddler. She still clotheslines me with her arm if I am in the front seat and she slams on the brakes and I picked that one up. Of course, my family always seems to be behind the times. My mom is 47 and grew up largely without indoor plumbing and didn't have a TV, and then only B&W after she went to college in the 80s and the family had a party line (that my great grandfather paid for and installed) practically up until I was born. As far as carseats go, she was pretty lucky though, she only had two carseats to deal with for a year that way.

One day I am going to buy a new car or a real classic that has been renovated or I will do it myself. My father bought the first new car my parents have ever had in 25 years of marriage a couple of years ago and . . . duh, duh, duh, duh . . . . didn't put my mom's name on it. She has never owned a new car and really drove quite a serious of junkers for most of their marriage. Sure, the depreciation isn't practical and they cost an arm and a leg, but I think it is something everyone should do once if they can afford it! They don't make air fresheners with "new car smell" for nothing!
