Fashintern, thanks for the clarification, I definitely misunderstood you and maybe I still am? I have no knowledge of how frequently people find the need to change their hair products or how long most people test a new product before committing to a larger (than sample) sized container. I did not mean to imply this is a permanent choice, however I am happy enough with the results to try continuing my use of this product line to see how it goes over time…..

Lol—it’s not about the organization. I meant that sometimes products can seem to work for a while, but once we settle in, they turn out not to be so great. Many people find their hair does better with periodic product switches. No shade on your research skills intended, but if you’ve found the set that will now work for you permanently, that’s amazing.

Yay success! It looks great, pretty, loose curls! It is amazing what difference the right product can make. I have also found that I don't go through a lot - I only wash 2 days each week, although I do use styling products every day. My experience has been that some products work well for a while and then stop giving me the results that I had been getting so it's definitely worth it to keep an open mind about new ones.

Star, thanks for this comment. As I was rereading what I wrote, it occurred to me that my stylist has become a family friend. When my hair was short, I really did not need her to also be a curly/wavy hair expert. Now, with longer hair, I do need someone who has that sort of expertise.

I think it is important for one's stylist to be a Curl expert FWIW. I think loyalty is only warranted when one is getting the expertise they require. Your current stylist probably understands this.

Judy, thanks, I had a chance to read about New Wash online. I went to their website and took their quiz. For my hair type they suggested three products, the original wash, a hair balm and a finishing product as well (wax?). I looked at the ingredients of the products and they seem similar to some of those in the Innersense products I am currently using. The price is much lower per ounce for the New Wash so I will probably try it once I use up my current supply. With longer hair, I definitely use more product than I did when my hair was pixie length!

Gigi, I like both of these, thanks! I have tried experimenting with parting my hair further to one side than usual and I like the asymmetry, My stylist is very experienced but is not a curl specialist. I worry it would be disloyal to switch to someone else, since she had cut my hair for 25 years, but I have been tempted to see if there is anyone local who “specializes” in wavy/curly hair.

Fashintern, yes, when I have a “project” I get to work! Sometimes, I can be very analytical, organized, methodical, efficient and decisive. These qualities often help me excel in my professional role.

Just adding my two cents to Deborah's suggestion of New Wash. I've used nothing else on my hair for over two years now. I have very similar looking hair to yours, curl wise, though mine is longer. I have no dyes in my hair, just grey/white streaks. Though it is pricey...I opted for the kit of the rich moisturizing shampoo and hair balm with a scalp brush (the brush is great!)...I don't use it daily so it lasts a long time for me. It isn't a sudsy shampoo (and you don't need alot of it) and you don't need any conditioner. Then afterwards I use only a very small amount of the hair balm on my damp hair to style and let the curls dry naturally. I love how it makes my hair feel. Healthy and soft and curly but with a nice smoothness without frizz. I had seen ads on social media for it but it was an interview with Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness where he mentioned it that sold me on it. :) Good luck!

Deborah, thanks for the product suggestion. I have not heard of New Wash so I plan to learn more about it. I have heard of the Curly Girl Method. I think that’s what I’m doing since the new products I chose are “curly girl method approved” (which I think means they have no sulfates, or silicones…). I have heard of Co-wash. I do not think it’s a product line as much as a term for cleaning your hair using a conditioner that may also have some cleansing properties. My limited understanding is that not all conditioners are co-washes…..

Angie, thanks! Thanks for suggesting I bookend with silver shoes! I have one pair each of silver sneakers, booties and sandals, so I’m covered for most seasons! It would be nice to have some loafers, derby’s, ballerina flats, and maybe some dressy kitten heels or wedges as well, so I’m adding silver shoes to my shopping wish list.

Shevia, I agree, we have a similar curl pattern. I hope you can find some of these products to try! Innersense may only be available in hair salons….I purchased my samples from a salon near my house (not the same salon where I get my hair cut).

Bijou, thanks!

Gigi, yes! I am looking for less frizz, more shine and definitely softness. I get straw like helmet hair with no movement if the products are too heavy. I plan to try the As I Am leave in at some point, it sounds like it would work well with my hair.

My style adjectives are fresh, sleek, classic, soft (low contrast), light, practical. I look for long vertical lines, long diagonal lines, if there is curve the vertical needs to be more prominent than the horizontal aspect of the curve. In fact, I am considering eliminating soft and adding vertical to my style words.

Zaeobi, thanks for the link! I tested out the search function and learned one product I considered is not curly girl approved because it had dimethecone.

Suz, I am glad you tell because honestly, my hair is my hair and nothing changes that, so any differences are subtle. I suspect that I can see the changes in frizz level more than anyone else since I am so familiar with my hair and the changes are incremental not dramatic. Also, how soft vs stiff my hair feels does not show in a picture but the differences between products is definitely dramatic. Crunchy straw to silky soft!

Rachy… :-)

Helena, my community had a surge in cases but our current numbers are very low. The vaccination rate for adults is 70%, and our overall vaccination rate (down to 12) is 67%, so everything is opening up. Very few people are wearing masks in local stores. I have had my hair cut three times since pandemic restrictions have eased. I hope things will get back to normal soon for you as well.

Looking good! :)

Yes, I too have found that the products that really do what I need for my hair cost more. Hair can be picky! But I'm like you in that I don't need tons of product, so I can deal with the cost.

I have used the As I Am leave-in that Rosie mentioned, and you might like it. It is not heavy, and it makes the hair very soft, which is a trait you appear to be looking for.

I'm excited for your haircut! What are your style descriptors? That might help people as they search for haircut inspo.

That's great to hear a success story - well done for persevering. Your curls LF! Just wanted to share this search website to help make future product searches easier: http://www.isitcg.com

Even if you don't plan to go full-on CGM (Curly Girl Method), you can enter the ingredients list into the search box & it will break down the individual issues with specific ingredients. I use it as a starting point to determine whether a product would work for me even if it's not 100% CGM approved (e.g. I'm ok with humectants & glycerin because of the humidity here lol, but others aren't).

@Jonesy, thanks for the suggesting Original Moxie. My daughter uses it on her hair and loves it, so I had every reason to anticipate it would work for me too. It just shows how important it is to experiment a bit and try things since hair that looks similar could really react very differently to the same product.

Rosie, I’m glad you have also found something useful here! Now that I have some basic products, I plan to test the Marissa Method. I may look into the As I am products to see if anything would work for me, the price is much better and I can purchase easily at our local Target.

RoseandJoan, thanks for sharing the inspiration pictures. I love the idea of having my hair swept off from to the side in front and going without a well defined part. It give more volume at the roots.

Suntiger and Slim Cat, thanks for the encouragement!

Your hair looks great - congrats on finding the winning product ( the best ones are often pricy it seems ). Good luck with new haircut - will be waiting for pics.

Look great! I read your other posts and did not have a chance to comment. I too have wavy/curly 2b/2c silvery hair around your length..... I tried the Marissa refresh method recommended in the post and it's a game changer for hair refresh! THANK YOU to whoever mentioned it first ( I should go back and check ... sending them HUGS)

Products: I've played around TONS, bought samples and found things I liked. Current favorites: As I am leave in conditioner. I use this as my "product" when I do the Marissa refresh and there is something about this product- I have fine hair but it's impossible to overdo it, my hair just seems to absorb it and love it. This is great for me, because My issue is I always put too much product in my hair, "More is More" I told my amused hairdresser....because in my mind I'm like how is that pea sixed amount of product going to do anything???? Can't overdo the As i am leave in conditioner. You can get it at Target or Amazon in the US and its about $7!

Other products I loved: as I am co wash conditioner, Innersense the sweet spirit leave in, Ouidad. I will probably try LUS next just to switch things around.

Sticking with these products and playing around with amounts and techniques appears to be the right next move
