I think Spiralicious is supposed to be good for humid weather. I think it has a polyquat in it that is good for protecting against humidity. I'm curious to see how things turn out!

Thanks for the update! I think it is looking pretty good! I definitely get better curls when I apply a curl cream in the shower so the sopping wet works for me too. I may have to give Mop Top a try one of these days but so far I am liking the Curls Blueberry Bliss. It has a small amount of protein in it though, so may not be what you need.

As far as porosity, I have no idea. I have tried to figure it out and just get confused so gave up.

I need to follow along with what you are learning. We are now getting into truly humid weather here, and I’m learning that my unprocessed hair is more prone to frizz than it was last year when I still had a lot of old, colored bits left. My hair looked fine when I left the house last night and looked downright scary by the time I got home. I don’t want crunchy curls or anything greasy, and it’s really hard to find the right answers. I am feeling your pain!

Hi Staysfit, I've just had a look at the ingredient list for the mop top custard and note that glycerin is the second ingredient. A lot of curlies avoid glycerin during the summer months as it can draw moisture from the air (I'm unsure if this is fact or psuedoscience) but you may find you have better results when the temperature drops.

So, back again to say that the Mop Top Curl Custard worked well as long as I stayed indoors. I went to our local farmers market on a warm, humid day and my hair expanded to at least 1.5 maybe 2 times its previous volume……in my mind it tripled!

Lesson: Mop Top Curl Custard has a citrus scent, and is probably better for the cold and dry months in my climate, not the hot and humid.

I am going to test out the Original Moxie next, and since it is pricey, I have my eye on Jessicurl Spiralicious which has a scent free option, and Curl Mix Pure collection which is also scent free.

So many useful ideas here! I’m on a search for new curl products too. I’ll check out some of these suggestions.

I used a Mop Top conditioner for a few years and eventually realized it was the source of my dandruff (not product buildup- some sort of scalp reaction). It had the same orange scent, though actually I liked the scent ok — one of the very few scents that doesn’t give me a headache. But I’d still rather have unscented. Anyway, it’s all so individual so I’m sure it’s fantastic for people with fewer sensitivities than me. But interesting to realize it could be an issue.

Yes RoseandJoan you are correct. High porosity hair grabs quickly but also loses quickly. Gray hair is mostly high porosity that is why most dyes do not grab very well on such hair. When you dye very gray/silver hair initially it will look very bright/dark/etc but washes out very quickly - speaking from my own experience, and generally. Obviously not all gray hair is the same.

Shevia, from what I've read high porosity hair has a rough cuticle which means as well as being prone to breakage it absorbs water quickly, however, for the same reason water is also quick to escape and takes less time to dry.

There's definitely a lot of conflicting information on the web about this.

@shevia Mine also takes a long time to dry, but I've heard that may actually be a sign of low porosity due to a lack of damage (since more damaged hair is likely to soak up the moisture quicker).

Your curls look lovely here! I echo the others on porosity: I tried the hair float test @Star but overall what sealed it for me was the fact that most products tend to 'sit' on my hair instead of be absorbed (I usually have to plop & let my hair dry a bit with a cotton tshirt before using the hairdryer & heat protectant because of it). The other thing I learnt was that gels etc often give me that 'hard' cast, which I know you're supposed to 'scrunch' out but my hair wasn't really having it (because the product would just coat my hair instead of seeping into it, whenever I tried scrunching I'd end up with frizz instead). So my solution was to wrap in a cotton t-shirt & later use a hair buff on a silk pillowcase (cotton would cause tugging) & the t-shirt & buff combined would do the scrunching work for me overnight without the frizz (since my hands aren't getting involved). Lazy girl curls, lol!

As for the itchy scalp, I switched to this shampoo (attached photo) - sorry there's no link, since I buy it locally. The other thing that worked for me was cold tar shampoo, but that requires a prescription (in the UK, at least) & is not for long-term use - as a clarifying wash (to clear product build-up), perhaps.

For detangling, I've found the original Tangle Teezer works best for me (in the shower, only used on wet hair): https://www.tangleteezer.com/ They also seem to have a long handled brush version, but I haven't tried it personally.

You're on the right track! Just know it might take a little trial & error to find what works for you, & that you may need to vary it a bit in summer & winter.

I have heard of the porosity test Star mentions, but I think the Science-y Hair Blog says that it is not accurate, because the surface tension of the water can affect the outcome. In any case, I know I have seen from multiple sources that it is not a reliable test.

Most people with high-porosity hair have hair damage from coloring and heat tools, but some people's hair is just naturally that way, from what I have seen on curly-hair forums. But chances are that if your hair is not damaged by those things, it is probably low porosity on or the lower end of normal. Experience-wise, I think that people who find they can throw lots of heavy products at their hair and the hair just seems to soak them up without getting weighed down are more likely to have hi-po hair, whereas people who find that their hair is easily weighed down by products often have lo-po hair (the product sits on the hair shaft rather than being absorbed).

I found this Porosity Test whereby you wash your hair first, let it dry fully and then drop a snip of hair in to a glass of water. If it floats then your hair is low porosity. Have not tried it but will next time I shampoo and before put any leave-ins in.

Nuancedream, I love the idea of a hair sunscreen…….I have used one from Pureology. Also, many thanks for cueing me to consider whether Shea and coconut were causing problems…..I’m day three, no Shea butter, and no scalp itch! My waves are less defined but still soft and shiny.
 :-)

Runcarla, as I learn, I will continue to post anything I think is useful.

Rachy, I love the name of No Nothing…..definitely going to check it out! Do they also carry, Yes Everything and A bit of this and that? (Sorry…too obvious)

Gigi, the Science-y blog is a gold mine, however, I do find it tricky to search for specific information. I will look to see about an oil pre-poo, especially since it is clear to me that the proteins I was using before, plus the Shea were definitely wrong!

Let’s briefly talk porosity: Does anyone here understand hair porosity? I started out thinking I have medium to high porosity hair and now I think I have medium to low porosity hair……here’s why: 1. From what I am learning, heat damage from blowouts, curling irons and color treatments…especially bleaching or lifting of color causes higher porosity. 2. Another cause of higher porosity is hair length because exposure to sun and the elements over time increases hair porosity. I have not done any heat drying or styling, or bleaching of my hair…so much less likely have high porosity hair. However, the ends of my hair, may be higher porosity than my roots. 3. Coarse hair tends to be lower porosity hair and my hair is medium to coarse in thickness…(this means one strand of my hair can be easily felt between finger and thumb, and also is close in width to sewing thread….mine is slightly thinner than thread…although I only have quilting thread (possibly thicker thread). 4. Hair supposedly becomes less porous as it becomes grey….although I have also read the opposite, so not so sure how having grey hair factors in? If accurate, all these point to my having low porosity hair…..

Your hair looks great, Staysfit. I thought about growing my hair long again, but I know I would get frustrated and would retreat to my cropped cap of curls. I agree with Gigi's comment about cutting back on protein in conditioners, which makes my hair hard and brittle. Also, I use a product called Hair in the Sun by Sachajuan, which is a hair sunscreen. It also acts as a light styling cream.

I'm happy that you're making progress! If your hair often feels like straw and brittle, then I think you're on the right track to cut back on protein. When I get too much protein, it takes me a week or two after cutting back to get to where I want to be, so it will be interesting to see whether things continue to improve for you.

Another great way to get softer hair is to do an oil pre-poo. It involves putting oil on dry hair the night before you are going to do a wash, so that the oil has time to penetrate the hair. If you're interested, you can find info on the Science-y Hair Blog. This treatment doesn't add moisture but can help make brittle hair softer.

That’s great! I’ve been using a line of product called No Nothing - I love it for its lack of scent as well as it’s lack of other weird stuff.

If fragrance is an issue Jessiecurl offer no fragrance products across their range. Unfortunately, I have no experience of their products as they are outside of my price range, however, I have read many favourable reviews.

I look forward to your next installment

RoseandJoan, I will use the shampoo, but maybe not the conditioner or gel ( see what Star wrote). There is a Shea free conditioner in the Original Moxie order, and it should be better for my grey hair….also either an odorless gel or one that has a scent I like would be nice….

April, I have Curl Mix on my radar. Odor free gel might be something that happens quickly, if my eczema or rosacea gets worse, since it’s the biggest negative with the Mop Top. (No itching so far, which is so much nicer than previous products).

Star, thanks for the warning that Argan oil can stain grey hair, etc. I would not have thought of it, and therefore will quickly swap it for the Original Moxie when it arrives. I also plan to experiment with different ways to apply the products, and also sort out how much, etc.

Glad you happier with your hair. One thing I have read is that products with Argan oil can stain grey/silver/white hairs yellow. I try and stay away from any product with a yellow or brown tinge. Maybe it is okay in a shampoo but not for a leave-in product.

This is a great start you have lovely definition, how do you plan to proceed now Staysfit? Are you going to continue with these products a while and experiment with amounts and techniques or will you try the moxie products as soon as they arrive?
