We had a big bath tub sized rectangular tub on the patio. It attracted great blue herons that liked to fish for gold fish kept to eat mosquito larvae. The fish got very big. We enjoyed the herons. This was in Kansas. Water is lots of work but enjoyable in the summer. You will see water plants on every garden tour. Our fish ate ours. We had to decide between fish and plants. Frogs also appeared. Build it and they will come.

One more photo then I'll stop. This is the first waterfall after the one that starts the whole stream. The sharp-eyed will see Rocky Raccoon peeking out of the bushes directly above waterfall.

We have a pond with lots of frogs and newts in it at the moment. It’s a complete joy for us as it attracts a lot of wildlife through out the year.We don’t have anything fancy growing in it as it’s not a natural pond.It got a butyl liner. We have a couple of water lilies, water mint and pond weed.

Oh my - we have a very elaborate stream/water feature with multiple waterfalls, stone bridges, etc. - Mr. A's pride and joy.

When we moved in, our property had serious water issues. Every yard around us (3 of them) was literally dumping all their runoff water onto our backyard. We hired a brilliant "water engineer" who channeled the whole thing and spent 8 months on the property with huge construction vehicles, fixing the problems, installing drains, planting native water plants and so on.

To anyone worried about mosquitoes I say there is such an ecosystem back there that they are easily managed. Dragonflies and frogs make short work of them for the most part.

For us, in southern Connecticut, the native plants are pickerel rush (photo 1), cattails (2), blue flag irises (3), and countless native grasses. We have pulled out most of the Japanese iris (yellow - pretty but non-native).

For real, anyone in the area who's curious is invited to go here https://www.gardenconservancy......aan-meadow and buy a ticket - I think they're $10 - to an August 24 tour sponsored by the Garden Conservancy. Mr. A will be leading the tours at our place while I babysit Bodie in the barn. You cannot see the stream at all in these pictures but I promise you it's there!

We put in a waterfall a couple years ago. We had a collapsing rock wall that needed rebuilding, so we added the waterfall while all the workmen and equipment were already here. It’s for birds, naturally. We don’t have any water plants at all. The basin at the bottom has an adjustment to raise the water level for a small pool, but we thought it would attract raccoons and skunks. Plus, we’re in a desert, and it might use even more water. We just have perennials planted around it. It’s a mess because we were gone for ten days, and now we’re under a heat dome. :(

Yours is lovely, Carla! I think the lillies and water grasses are pretty easy, but they can sometimes get out of control in this climate. Might be less a problem there?

Thanks for the photos, Suz. We have a pond, but it was 9 yo when we bought our current home, and it’s been 10 year. I’ve managed it pretty well by myself - until 2 years ago when it got away from me. Had some folks come in to clean and rebuild it. There’s still a little work left, but it’s much better. Now I’m looking to add some water plants - but know nothing about these. I would like to have lillies.

Just two small fountains on our deck, which I hope to set up today if I can gather the strength (suffering from a virus here, yuck.)

A good friend of mine has an amazing pond in her Japanese style garden. It's beautiful. The photos below were taken in early autumn a few years ago. You can see she has water lilies in there. There are koi and a pair of turtles as well.

It is not without its upkeep, of course. She's had occasional problems, but fortunately she has someone knowledgeable to help with repairs.

First 3 photos, my friend's garden. Last one, my little mini-water area. The fountains make a pretty noise and do attract some birds for quick drinks and rinse-offs.

I don't unfortunately, but because I do feed birds, squirrels, possums, and other occasional wildlife, as well as drop-ins from not-so-wild life, I need a water source. Found this outfit, which offers small, beautiful hand-hewn stone and granite basins that can be tucked into the landscape. Perfect for those of us with urban townhouse gardens.
http://danceswithstone.com

I wish I had a little koi pond with lotuses, and/or a waterfall, but would have to take trees down to install. At least I live by the river :)

I would be concerned about it freezing over in winter, and attracting even more mosquitos to my yard though. Mosquitos get really bad here, and I'm a magnet for them
