I have an LG that has no agitator. I love it except for the water level. I fix it by adding extra.

I have a Maytag Bravos and I do NOT recommend it. It's very hard on clothing (I've had clothing come out extremely wrinkled, and I've had it tear clothing too) and sometimes the washer does not fill up with water as much as I'd like (I know this because the clothes come out with big dry spots on them). It was an expensive machine and has had to be repaired three times (two under the warranty). The next time it needs a repair it is leaving the house!

Thank you everyone for all your insight. I decided to check on my warranty and happily discovered that the extended one I took out was for 5 years not 3 as I had originally thought, happy dance! It is being repaired on Monday which is great . However after Christmas I will look to get a new set as the warranty expires in February and this will be the third repair. The other two repairs totaled $500 and the machines original cost was $799 ! Will definitely be checking out the Speed Queens.

Mine is GE with no special name and I like it a lot. I bought it at the beginning of this year when we moved back from overseas and needed a new set. I walked into Sears and asked to be shown the dumbest washer they had. This was it. It's perfect. (My criteria for a washer are simple: top load, non-locking, and no "smart" anything - if I'm paying for the machine, it has to do what I want. If a machine is going to do its own thing, then it will have to pay me.)

Speed Queen hands down.....I have a top load GE that flooded my house last year, and it was less than 1 year old. When I asked the repairman what he will buy when he replaces his, that was his answer. The warranty is much longer than any other, and it's made to withstand "commercial" use (laundramats).....When I receive the settlement from my insurance company who is currently suing GE, I will buy a Speed Queen.....

My agitator seems to take up less room than my very first washer which was Sears branded so I don't know which American brand it really was. I think you can fill a top load more than a front load. My second washer was a Danby front load which was a re-badged Gorenje from Slovenia. Since it was European, it held a lot less than the typical American washer but could crank up to 200 degrees!

I typically manually fill my washer with extra water after it turns off. Speed Queen lowered the water level settings from the original days to get a better energy use score or something like that. There is probably a mechanical fix available on YouTube, but I'm fine with what I do.

My late mom's washer had electronic controls, and some of the lights no longer worked. She died with a good dozen or more loads of dirty laundry, but since I was selling her house I didn't want to fix the washer. It was quite a guess to figure out what the water temperature and speed would be.

We just bought a Maytag toploader, and it is great. Our previous Maytag lasted 11 years before dying. We have ridiculously hard well water, so appliances like washers and dish washers have short lives out here due to lime buildup.

I have been happy with Speed Queen too, it was recommended by our local mom and pop appliance store. The size of the tub is only an issue when I wash bulky dog beds.

Donna I have read good things about Speed Queen . The models I see seem to be a 3.3 size is that big enough ? I think current washer was 4 something. I guess the agitator takes up space in the Speed Queen .

Speed Queen!!! LOVE mine. Made like a tank and sold by independent dealers. Probably all other washers have electronics which can easily go bad. No reason to have a matching dryer so you can save there.

I am looking for a new washing machine. My Samsung front loader died tonight . It's only 4 years old ! I want a mechanical top loader old style, wish I had kept my old one. I hated my front loader it didn't seem to wash well and it smelt awful despite all that I tried. Any one have a newish model mechanical washer that is still sold. The only ones I have found are by Speed Queen and they are more than I really want to spend but ....
