Thanks, IK. I would never have thought to look for non-gear gear. That could work if I can find something without a darned logo. Are your linen knits like tees or sweaters?

Thanks adorkable, I'll look for cotton jersey too.

Thanks, Laura. I don't have a problem with synthetics, so I'll look for blends aswell. Are blends better than 100% rayon or poly?

Anything knit will usually wrinkle less than the same fiber in a woven. In wovens, the addition of rayon or tencel to cotton or linen will help with wrinkling. Of course, the addition of polyester or nylon will help too - a lot of people don't like synthetics but I find that blends are really useful. Sometimes a bit of nylon or poly will let a fabric be thinner than it might be if it were plain cotton. Weaves make a difference too, which is harder to quantify than fiber content.

Cotton jersey doesn't wrinkle so badly, in my experience, and it's pretty comfortable.

Linen knits. I wear them all summer long.

A lot of gear manufacturers make fabrics that wick, and if you look carefully you can find items that don't scream "gear."

I find silk too hot but many people swear by it in tank formation, like Suz.

Suz, those are awesome tops. I can do sleeveless as long as there's enough coverage for a supportive bra. Even my much older clients will forgive me a conservative sleeveless top in the dregs of summer. Checking out AT, BR and J Crew now. Thanks!

No...seriously, it gets KILLER humid here, too. I'm on Lake Ontario. And we don't have air conditioning. But, I admit, there is typically a breeze. Which really helps. And I have a big fan in my work room.

Honestly, though -- I wore silk tops in NYC during a heat wave last summer. It's all down to the cut. It has to be cut loose enough -- a sort of swing or trapeze style works best. I also go sleeveless, which might not be okay for you for work? Not sure about that. It does make a huge difference.

And yes -- I totally do stuff like K suggests -- it's not just in the south!! (It's just that I don't do it for as many months of the year -- here it's only for about six to eight weeks at most.)

I reaffirm the option of a linen knit. J. Crew has great ones. Again, you have to go for fluid fit. If any top is super fitted, it will be hot.

Image 1: Waiting to get on the subway. Don't you love the equal and opposite colour blocking? BR silk top.

Yeah, they may not be appropriate when you have a client with you. I think most of forgive the back wrinkles because there isn't much else we can do. I hope this summer is cooler like the last one. Just with a bit less rain.

K, I do the same thing! At least when I don't have a client in the car. Only in the South, right?

One thing I try to do is untuck my top if it's tucked in, pull it down and slide into the car holding it like that. I know it sounds weird, but it's helped me keep some of the wrinkles out.

I hope that helps some. I'm not really sure what else we can do considering how hot we get around here.

Silk? Won't it end up stuck to my back? It's so humid here in the summer that my sunglasses fog to the point of not being able to see through them the second I get out of the car. Summers in Canada sound pretty good about now!

Linen knit does sound brilliant.

Silk.

Seriously. I wash all my silks in the delicate cycle in my washer in a little mesh bag. No dryer. I do have to iron them afterwards, but it's no different than any other shirt except no -iron.

I also love a cotton-linen blend. It doesn't wrinkle quite as badly as linen on it own. Linen knits are also brilliant.

Tencel. Not that I deal with heat and humidty much. In India, cotton is best, ideally a light "lawn" or gauzy fabric.
