She is too young for me to even consider any oral meds, so the dermatologist suggested something called Formula 3. It's painted on twice a day (like nail polish) She's been using it for a few months and her nails have started to show improvement. I finally started taking oral fluconozole 5 mos ago . This is much less horrible in terms of side effects and liver damage than the other oral meds that used to be the only option . You only take it once per week and it has few side effects. So far, my nails seem to be growing out mostly clear. I anticipate I'll probably have to take it for a year- it since it is just 1x/wk I don't mind. I had it in ALL my toes and it was pretty severe . I suggest going to your podiatrist. Nothing else I've tried worked- teatree, Vicks, etc. I've heard that they don't really know how well the laser rx works because it is so new. I had my blood monitored to check for any damage to the liver and I came through the treatment just fine and now I like my toenail much better. No liver damage, but you'll want to keep it away from kids and pets, and wash your hands. </p> <p>I got the infection 8 years ago, when I got a pedi for my wedding --- the doctors' drug box was a total failure. Nail got deformed, thick, yellow, and yikes! soft and thus painful in the closed shoes I was wearing to hide them.</p> <p>So first things first, you want to get some AIR in there! I *know* it is hard, it feels like everyone thinks you have a terminal case of poor hygiene --- but get the polish off, and try to wear open-toed shoes as much as you can bear to. Fungus thrives in dark, enclosed, moist places. Which is why topical treatments usually fail. They just can't keep up. If it helps, I've found the more close-strapped gladiator style or the perforated uppers on some shooties provide camouflage while letting the air in.</p> <p>Second, get yourself some TEATREE OIL pronto! If it's pure essential oil, you will need to mix a few drops in a vehicle of alcohol to aid penetration and thin it down (about 30% volume should do). But you might be able to find the kind of preparation meant for acne, which comes ready blended, sometimes with another carrier oil. Aim for 5-15% of teatree in there, if you get the latter. Apply twice a day --- I used a dropper to pour it on, then a cotton bud to make sure I ease it under the edges and into the sides of the nail bed. If your nail has thickened, it helps to *gently* file it thinner to help the penetration.</p> <p>It takes TIME, I needed several months to see improvement (the new nail starts to grow in healhier) and seems very slow to heal. But teatree oil really works and I'm sure is way cheaper than laser if you have the patience. If you can combine it with the ACV once a day, better still. </p> <p>(I know if that laser was available around my neck of the woods, I would have been sorely tempted to try it. He has had trouble with this and hates it. The oral medication requires bloodwork first to be sure the liver is healthy, and yes, it can be very hard on the liver. What's more is that it's expensive! Two courses of medicine = $1600. </p> <p>But the worst part is, it will just come back in a couple of years. Jamie took the medication about 5 years ago, and the fungus went away, but started to return about two years later. I am not in favor of medicine as a rule, but it is something to consider.
