Janet -- that's me! I'm all thighs and calves. ;)

And, a quick Anthro browse led to three new possibilities:

Yes, Anthro's Pilco line is good. They fit me well, which is a minor miracle in itself. Good for women who have a little more in the thigh area. :-)

Ryce, I think I added those same chinos to my Finds last summer! They seem to get excellent reviews. I hear good things about Anthro's Pilcro brand as well.

Really well thought out list, La Ped- you are inspiring me to get organized to do this myself.

I wonder if you might find some of the items on your wish list in the gear and gear-ish brands? Granted, they use a lot of recycled polyester fabrics, which isn't what you are wanting for these items - but a number of them offer some natural fiber "lifestyle" kind of items, too. I had tremendous luck last year with a brand I wasn't familiar with before: Carve Designs - featherweight all-cotton gauze button fronts and a woven cotton/linen blend dress with pockets. Lole, Prana, Aventura - all seem to be adding more organic cotton items to their offerings lately. But you likely know more about some of these lines than I do.

Although replacing your beloved chinos isn't on your list, I couldn't help but wonder if you might like these. These Vince boyfriend chinos were everywhere a year or two ago, and still seem pretty readily available at decent prices at discounters, ebay, etc. They have a 9 inch rise and are an incredibly light, fine and silky feeling cotton.

I need to do this. Last year I bought new summery bottoms and was very happy. Then I lost some weight. Now I wonder if I'll need new pants. I have mixed feelings about this.

I had several pairs of Patagonia baggies. They wear like iron. I would wear them canoeing over my swimsuit. When I gained weight they still fit! But super unflattering. But you're younger and fitter, probably the very cutomer they had in mind when they designed them.

Good job. I should do this too. I kind of dread it because it entails trying on my summer bottoms and exposing my pasty white, out-of-shape legs, which never makes me feel good. Even when I am my most fit, they are not my best feature, so dressing for summer is fraught for me. I envy all of you who can get away with shorter shorts and above-the-knee skirts and dresses, as that really opens up far more hot-weather wardrobe options.

Smittie -- try the Patagonia Baggies. They come in 2 inseams (5" and 2.5"), are really comfortable, and come in lots of colors and prints. They're all nylon, dry fast, and have big functional pockets (not zippered though, so not good for phones/cameras). North Face makes a similar short, but not quite as awesome. Columbia, Ex Officio, and Eddie Bauer all make really nice quick-dry button front shirts with lots of pockets -- intended for fishing, but useful for other outdoor activities.

Chris987 -- I've been looking for the right black jeans since last summer. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a couple pairs of Levi's this month -- they have a lot of black and grey options and lots of different fits. I'll try to remember to post a Find.

Great post! I've already done a bit of a spring assessment and am focusing on spring footwear now. Will need to do an inventory like this for summer next. You uniqlo items give me inspiration to look there for linens and other summer weight items.

I too am seeing so few choices in black jeans (faded or otherwise) right now. They are one of my must-haves but I've been without for a while and they seem to be less available than in the past even at places that always have a wide variety of jeans. I'll share if I find possibilities.

It sounds like you get a kick out of gear and that it works well for your lifestyle, so I see no problem investing in this type of clothing. I'll sometimes see people in excellent geared up outfits. The colours are just so, and the items are new looking and up-to-date. So I think you can make gear look good. Gear is important for an outdoor lifestyle!

For those times when you would rather not be wearing gear, yes I think you should have a few items on hand. The linen pants seem like a great idea.

I'm the opposite of you: I really don't need a lot of gear and really don't like buying it. I don't find it exciting and don't like the fabric. BUT, I am outdoors enough that having at least a few gear type things would be good. But I don't own anything and it makes for troubling times.

For example, I ended up going kayaking three times last summer and all I had were heavy cotton shorts and a cotton tshirt and flip flops. The cotton got soaked and wouldn't dry and the flip flops were terrible in the water. The shirt also didn't have good pockets, so where do I put my phone?! The whole outfit was terrible and I was horribly uncomfortable. But I don't have any good clothes for water sports, so that was what I wore.

Having some quick dry things with pockets would have been a boon.

kkards -- I was just looking at some paperbag style shorts from Gap. I'm curious about them and might give them a try. I like loose shorts too, but I have to get over my horror of pleats... The J Crew's might be alterable, but I think it's more just the way the fabric relaxes. If I take the waist in, they'll sit higher and I might be in wedgie territory. They really are a low rise -- 7 or 7.5" I think?

rachylou -- the only thing I ned to replace this year is a dark grey tank top that I've had for 5 years. It's a model that's no longer made, and I can't find anything quite like it. The length, neckline, etc are all just right. Meanwhile, it's getting RATEr and RATEr. Otherwise, I wear a lot of buttonfronts in the summer -- linen, lightweight cotton. And thin breton tops, like Boden's. And Uniqlo art tees. I have to restrain my self from buying more tops actually -- that's the easy part.

For toppers, I just scored a cropped white denim jacket and a Madewell field jacket yesterday at the consignment shop in town. Gonna play with those for a bit and see how they work out. I want some kind of cropped knit cardigan too -- chunky cotton, black or navy.

i go back and forth on shorts....sometimes years i just can't seem to wear them. but in general i like really loose fit with a straight leg...give the gap a try, IMO this is one of those categories that they do really well (and of course, sign up for alerts for when they are running 40% off)...and i'm kind of intrigued by these shorts that look like a skirt....
(re the jcrew chino's that travel down...you may want to have the waist band taken in)

Do you have a summer uniform? Do you have tops to go with your bottoms?

I'm just thinks about what I have and barriers to wearing it... I will have to reassess this year, after thinking I'd finally gotten summer all settled. I need pants now instead of skirts.

Sterling -- The Uniqlo linen pants are blended w/ cotton, so they don't get terribly wrinkly. But honestly, I'm not wrinkle-averse. my style is rate enough to tolerate a few wrinkles, especially in the summer.

Joy -- My hot-weather needs are totally different in New England than they were for the past 3 years, when I was in Nevada. In NV, I didn't mind wearing denim shorts because the heat was dry -- it's the humidity that makes thick cotton unpleasant. I also wore long pants and skirts a lot, for sun protection. But I should probably keep doing that, even in the northeast, since I'm outside a lot.

Angie -- and this is only my summer gear! I have four seasons of outdoor activities to shop for, plus the occasional indoor yoga class. Can't wear the same things canoeing as snowshoeing. I also didn't include highly specialized stuff (like bike shorts); these are just the things that I sometimes wear casually (even if I know I probably shouldn't). My gear is invariably my most comfortable clothing, because I shop for fit and comfort above all else. If it pulls, chafes, rides up, has itchy seams, etc, out it goes. I try to hold my everyday clothes to a similarly high standard, but I end up compromising for the sake of aesthetics.

I like your review and analysis. It's a good place to start with your Spring and Summer style refresh. Assess which of these casual bottoms are your wardrobe essentials too.

(And YES, you can absolutely have too much gear! I have three yoga outfits - and do yoga 3 to 4 times a week - and it already feels like too much gear when you can't stand wearing gear).

Great idea to take an inventory. I did not move many of my hot weather bottoms as they wear already several years old. This summer I am waiting to see what summers are like in a new high altitude climate and am sure that they are not as hot as what I was used to. Thank you for the inspiration.

We've had a few really warm days lately, which inspired me to get out my S/S clothes and see what I have. I've been struggling with what to wear for pants/shorts in the summer for years now (see my other thread here), and I feel like my current options are not very inspiring, so I sat down and did a full inventory. Afterwards, I came up with a list of possible additions that might add a bit more variety and fill some holes.

casual shorts:

Uniqlo chino shorts, turquoise — too large in the waist, shorter inseam than I’d like. fit well a couple years ago, not anymore. should probably replace with something else

black denim vintage Levi's cutoffs — made from old jeans that DH wore many years ago. sentimental value, look pretty good cuffed. heavy denim — not good for really hot days.

blue denim vintage Red Engine cut-offs — I hacked a pair of straight leg jeans last year to try bermuda length shorts. unfortunately, I really don’t like the way these look on me. also, they’ve now got some very persistent stains. saying good-bye to these.

gear (obviously I have enough gear, but does one really ever have *enough* gear?):

Patagonia baggies 2 pairs — 1 solid, 1 printed. great gear shorts.

Patagonia running shorts — 2 pair. 1 extremely old (backpacking trips only), 1 newer (for road and trail running, day trips, etc).

Athleta cropped joggers (nylon hiking pants) — these are great travel pants. they’re lightweight, don’t wrinkle and look fairly cute/current for gear pants.

Ex Officio roll-up pants (nylon hiking pants) — loose fitting, roll-up to capri length. my favourite hiking pants for extreme heat, and they provide full sun coverage (great for boating, desert trips, etc)

Prana yoga knickers in black — nice cropped leggings for yoga, hiking, and to wear under tunics (again, not great for the hottest days).

skirts:

black jersey a-line skirt from Toad & Co — knee length. I wore this a bunch last summer, but only on days when I didn’t need pockets.

purple jersey maxi skirt from Alternative Apparel — picked this up several years ago to experiment with maxi lengths. nice for beach/extreme casual, but maxi skirts aren’t really my thing. and, no pockets.

lightweight and cropped pants:

Uniqlo linen pants in sage green — these were my favourite thing to wear last summer, rolled to ankle length. fit well, very lightweight, nice color. The drawstring got lost in the wash, so now there are little holes where the cord used to be — I don’t like to tuck or semi-tuck with these.

Boden Richmond wide leg crops — black, versatile smart-casual pants. pretty substantial, not good for super hot days.

Boden Richmond ankle pants — see above.

old J Crew Waverly chinos, 2 pairs, grey and sage green — I’m always surprised how much I like these. perfect weight, all-cotton, slightly tapered, perfect for cuffing, and they’re from the last generation of J Crew pants that actually fit me. wish they were a higher rise though; they start out at my hip and by the afternoon sit even lower.

vintage J Crew cropped jeans, black denim — I loved these jeans for so long. they got to be a bit too big, and then one of the ankles had a run-in with some bleach — oops. So I hacked them last year, but they ended up a bit shorter than I’d like. also, the button fly is starting to disintegrate. these are placeholders until I find a new pair of faded black jeans — it’s so hard!

a loose woven skirt, knee length or midi length, with POCKETS. Grey, black, or navy would be the most versatile. linen, cotton, silk, or a blend.

more lightweight linen pants — again, black or grey would be best (I don’t like wearing the green ones with red (or red and white) shirts — looks too much like a Christmas palette). also considering linen shorts and overalls.

black jeans — not actually a summer wardrobe hole, but as all my old black jeans have been turned into cut-offs, it’s a noticeable hole in my f/w wardrobe

more cropped wide legs/culottes — I would like to add more of this silhouette in different fabrications — cotton canvas, drapey silk, linen, etc.

chino shorts in an interesting color (not khaki or navy) with a 4-6" inseam
