I passed your suggestions on to Santa’s elves in North America. My sister called me at midnight to say she was on Darn Tough’s website; would he like this kind or that? I asked her if she knew what time it was, and said to get him whatever she wants. Next time I’ll answer with “who died?” He’s been using the insoles for two days, and says they help.

Another vote for Darn Tough. If you want Smartwool on the cheap, look for deals on Sierra Trading Post or the like. I like the Costco Kirkland wool socks but nothing beats the Darn Touch.

Oh, thank you, thank you! I knew you would come through and boy did you! I’m on my phone so can’t flip back and forth to remember who said what, so I apologize for that. Thank you all for the mention of brand names and other tips. Teddy bears for his feet sound perfect for this kid. I’ve seen Calzedonia at various stores, so will check out what they have for him (ie, if Italians make them in his size).

La Ped, thanks for those lists! I may put my mom on the case, to go with the hi-top Chucks she is sending for Christmas, and I’ll look here for the other brands you mentioned.

Eva, it never would’ve occurred to me that this was a Reformhaus thing. I saw the Airport socks for men at Falke, assume they’re the 60% wool socks you mentioned. Are they warm? The website gives highlights for lots of the socks. Several women’s lines have “warm” listed as a highlight, but none of the men’s do. That’s where I got the idea that the men’s aren’t warm. That and that they are so thin. So many of your tips will be helpful—thank you!

Here’s what I was doing while you were all giving me this advice: I went to a shoe store (Deichmanns—their shoes are ok, but not great) to get him fleece shoe liners. They didn’t have size 48, so I got 46. There is a little gap length-wise, but not in the width. I hope they’ll help. His feet are so big it is difficult to find the right size any more. That store had socks that are supposedly warm, but not in his size and he didn’t like the way they looked.
I wandered through the Weihnachtsmarkt on Breitscheidplatz, didn’t know I should’ve been looking for socks, darn it, but we will go to more Weihnachtsmärkte, so I’ll look then. We live close to Winterfeldtplatz, so I’ll look at that market too—there are lots of textiles there.
I also stopped by Uniqlo. Heat tech socks come in tons of colors. He said he didn’t like any of them but I got a pair anyway. They are size 42-46, but he tried them on at home and it seems they’ll be ok. He’ll wear test-wear them to school tomorrow.
Running other errands, I passed by a clothing shop for the types of workers mentioned above.

His shoes, unfortunately, are not insulated. They are suede Puma, and we just spent 100 bucks on them a month ago. The leather Chucks he’s getting for Christmas are also not insulated. My mom says the clerk at the Converse outlet told her they didn’t make them for men with the plush lining. I hope warm soles (I’ll pick up some of the heat-reflective ones next time I’m at the drug store, so we can compare) and good socks will be enough for him!
If I knew he’d be able wear them in the spring, we could set these aside and get warmer shoes now, but who knows. He is very particular about how things look and feel and hates shopping. I hope socks and the warm shoe liners will suffice. He has plenty of room for them in his shoes—tied his canvas Chucks so tight the plackets on either side of the shoe touched, and still didn’t need to untie to take them on/off. (His feet are so clearly not from me I have to laugh—got myself a shoehorn today, so I can get my Seychelles Chelsea boots on, because I have ridiculously high arches).

Also, while I agree that it's important to have good boots, I think non-cotton socks are equally important. You want to move the moisture away from your feet to avoid clamminess and frostbite. Any wool, synthetic or silk option will be miles better than cotton when it comes to wicking moisture.

A couple other Euro brands to look for are Lorpen (I believe they're German) and Bridgedale (based in Northern Ireland, I think?). Both make really nice socks and I'm thinking they might be easier for you to find than Smartwool, Darn Tough, etc.

I agree with Angie ... I would focus more on a good pair of shoes/boots that are warm. I've lived in a cold climate my whole life and never bought particular socks, but good insulated boots are a must-have!

If you have some US friends wondering what to send him for the holidays, tell them Darn Tough socks. Like Janet, I'm a hardcore devotee; their merino socks are the best. Warm, durable, legit lifetime guarantee, and cute patterns!

For European brands, look for Viyella, Falke, and Calzedonia. Two pairs of thin wool socks (or a silk liner plus a wool sock) can be as warm as a thick boot sock. Also, I bet the big German gear brands (Jack Wolfskin, Mammut, etc) have good options.

I second the shearling insoles. I run really cold, and though I do wear wool socks, it’s the shearling insoles I wear in my moto boots that make all the difference. They keep my feet toasty in the winter. I wish I could remember where I got them, but that purchase seems lost in the mists of time. They wear like iron.

I like smart wool, but uniqlo heattech is a really good, cheap option that washes and wears really well.

I second angie's point about insulating shoes too. Was it you that was asking about the shearling insoles? They are great because for some reason many shoes that are shearling or fleece lined don't line the footbed. They do make your shoes fit tighter so you need to experiment a bit with sizing.

I have these LL Bean ones for my snow boots, and I know UGG also makes them.
https://www.llbean.com/llb/sho.....rValue_0=N

Smart Wool. Did you look at Amazon? Look at outdoor and hiking stores. You might also get him shoes a bit bigger than his size and add an insole. That can add another layer between feet and the ground. Do not get him cashmere socks. They are luxurious and fit well in shoes but do not last very long.

I took Smart Wool socks to NYC years ago and hated them. They rode down into my shoes. When we got back I got rid of them as fast as I could.

I have had Thorlo hiking socks from REI. I wore them for 10 years before I wore one out. Granted, I don’t wear them much in the summer.

I was intrigued by Janet's recommendation of Darn Tough socks. I discovered our local REI has a selection of them. If you’re a member, you get 10 percent back at the end of the year.

Darn Tough — I’m a convert to them after having walked holes into my Smartwool socks. If they wear out or are unsatisfactory in any way, they will sent you a voucher for a brand new pair (I got one pair that slid down into my shoes and they honored that policy). Not sure how available they are where you are now — I order mine on Amazon or get them at REI and they are not cheap but worth it.

Yes, Jessikams! Uniqlo HeatTech socks are not bulky, are warm when you need them to be (but not hot indoors), and wear like iron. Price point is good and I prefer them to most wool socks for their smooth comfort.

Fashintern, I don't know smartwool, so I don't know what the "prototype" of the socks you are looking for is, but there are lots of options.

Have you had a look at department stores like galeria kaufhof, karstadt, peek & cloppenburg? They usually have socks in wool mix for men at various price points. I have found Falke socks for men as well, for example 60% wool. These are made of rather fine wool (business socks). You could also check in TK Maxx.

If you are looking for thick wool socks, I recommend looking at the Christmas markets that are starting up everywhere in Germany now. Lots of wool socks to be found there. You could also check in a reformhaus, they tend to have wool socks in winter.

If you find wool socks too scratchy, you can also look for thick socks with a terry cloth lining. They are available in drug stores like dm or rossman for example. You can also find warm insoles there, with wool or aluminum for heat reflection.
Lastly, if you don't mind going to Aldi, they have warm socks on december 6.

Adding recommendation to check for any sporting goods stores that hunters like, because there is some serious gear out there for hunters (who sit very still for long periods in cold weather waiting for their prey to wander by).

Also adding recommendation to look for shops that supply uniforms and gear to public safety personnel (cops, firefighters, EMTs, even military personnel, etc) because those guys & gals have to show up to help people, regardless of weather; their clothing has to perform, so it's generally well made and caters to the current season. My favorite boots are from a brand that specializes in military & public safety footwear.

Last bit of info: I've read that Kirkland's wool socks (Costco house brand) are almost as good as smartwool and darn tough. They probably don't have Costco in Europe, but maybe a friend or family member could send some?

No, not the brand. Have to confess I don’t truly know any brands when it comes to socks. I was looking at wool fiber content for warmth. That’s the only thing that cuts it for me... that and Uniqlo Heattech. But wool has the upper hand there too.

Icebreaker is better than Smartwool if you’re going to spend the money... they have a lifetime warranty.

I echo suntiger, can you find a store that supplies construction workers?

Calzedonia has very nice, warm socks also for men, I buy them for my son there, with cashmere. They are not expensive and the quality is very good. It's an Italian brand, and they have shops in Germany too.

Heat holders if youre able to get them. Theyre warm and fuzzy on the inside, like wearing a teddy bear on your feet! Not cheap-like 20 a pair though, but just unexpectedly found a hat of same brand at local hardware store chain too. Where do people shop in Berlin that work outside?

I need to get Uniqlo into my head. Rarely think of them when I should. Thanks, Jessikams. It’s not really long days outdoors as much as it is the time walking/ taking public transit and break time at school, when they go outside. I wouldn’t want to use disposable warmers daily.

Racheylou, are you familiar with that brand? I’ve been doodling around in Amazon, and think ratings there are not accurate. Socks with 4-5 stars have 5 star ratings that say “waddyawant? They’re socks” and others that complain about thin soles, scratch material (huge no for my kid), fraying yarn... I don’t think the 5-Star people are lying, but I don’t think they were seriously paying attention either. So that’s why I turned to YLF, where I know people I knew pay attention, even to such a mundane question. I want personal recommendations.

COS has wool socks, do they have shops in Germany? They’re not as pricey as SmartWool.
For long days outside in the cold, I use disposable heat packs. You can buy them at outdoor stores.

Wool socks are not cheap (!) but they are totally the best.

I found these people, no real idea where they are: https://www.bleuforet.de/25-herren-socken

Hopefully Astrid will turn up... just taking the challenge of trying to get Google to return results in Germany. Ridiculously difficult from the US.

Florida Boy’s feet are freezing in Germany. He been wearing socks since last month, but the fashion socks from H&M aren’t warm enough. Falke, where I got these for me, don’t have warm socks for men. They have socks that breath, socks that are cushiony, socks with less-restrictive elastic up top....but not warm socks. Outfitting him in Smartwool every day of the week would be $200, with no turnaround time for laundry. What else is there? Bonus points if they are easily available in Deutschland.
