For a good hood, they need to be adjustable. Patagonia does this, and they have ethically sourced down, too, but they are more expensive. When I was looking for a waterproof shell for our Alaska trip, I found several that were otherwise great except for the giant hood. One came down and covered my eyes, and obviously that was a fail.

I checked Eddie Bauer in the outlets this week. Found one decent candidate, except for the hood...Kenny Every coat ive tried so far has had the Kenny hood phenomenon. Theyre so big they flop over my eyes!

My kid was a competitive cross country skier in high school. Nothing like being a finish line sequencer for a distance classic race in bitter weather when the wax is slow and the low elevation high school teams are dying at 7000 feet. Is it wrong to wish a teenager would drop out when they still have many km to ski and everyone else has finished? It is a long day of standing still. And I’m in California! I would never have learned to ski in the east or Canada.

I have this Eddie Bauer Sun Valley. The fake fur is removable. Chevron, somewhat shaped, comes in a nice burgundy, dark loden green, cocoa, driftwood. Petite reg, tall, plus. On sale for $139 US. Toasty. Rated to -34F, but I can’t vouch for that. I’ve worn it standing around for hours in snowy 20F with comfort (timing Nordic races is cold work).

Here is my K/R post from last year with IRL pics ad more detail on fit.
https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ite-puffer

The Lodge is an even warmer option also on sale. No chevron pattern but less noticeable hardware.

I also have a Lole puffer (same one as Suz) and it is very warm. Mine is burgundy.
I also have a Calvin Klein parka which is even warmer than the Lole puffer but it has faux fur trim on the hood.
But I agree that even on sale they were expensive

My Lole puffer is very warm. Lole has lots of styles. My LL Bean puffer is not nearly as warm and I bought the warmest one they had. I am actually disappointed with my LL Bean puffer. The wind goes through it. If I wear going to buy another down puffer (and I wouldn't - another subject) I would buy a Lole.

The warmest coat I have ever owned is a North Face. It ticks off many of the boxes you mentioned, but is outside the $150 price point, even when on sale.
I have recently seen Orolay advertised......lots of great styles, Canadian down filled, wind and water resistant and at GREAT prices! I have no experience with this brand, but am considering ordering one after the holidays. I want one for dog walking that is a bit less bulky than the one I am currently using.

Thanks all-will check them out! The 150 isnt set in stone, but ive seen on Macys site a lot about that price (on deep discount). Just dont know know warm they are! The other thing is im planning to move so hopefully wouldnt need the coat more than one or two more winters. Ive checked consignment, no long coats at all right now, will check outlets too.
And yes kkards, definitely would prefer ethical down. I dont want any birds or other critters harmed in the process.

I agree with Suz. I think it's going to be really difficult to get all those boxes checked for less than $150. I think that it's worth spending a bit more to get what you want, because a good puffer can last for a long time.

The Patagonia "Down With It" parka comes in burgundy this year. Self-colour hardware. It is quite warm and fairly water resistant (if it's warm enough to be raining instead of snowing, I'm probably not wearing a knee-length down puffer!). Nicely tailored; nips in at the waist but I can still fit a cardi or hoodie underneath. I have a navy one from a couple years ago and it is holding up well. My most reached-for winter coat.

I might look at J Crew and then check ebay for the same coat.

I'm in WI, have a St Bernard that needs to be walked, and needed a coat for those walks. Last year, I ended up getting J Crew's Mixed-media Burbridge parka. It doesn't really meet your all requests, but is the warmest coat I've ever worn. Combined with an old pair of Sorel Manitous, I stay toasty warm. Suggested retail was $695. I believe that I paid $125 for a brand new one on ebay and could not be happier.
