I love this look and think you look polished, professional and it sounds like you were also cozy for the weather. Kids have no filter and I've found they have different biases. I'm sure they see age as how you dress and it has nothing to do with anything else. My daughter says I look like a man whenever I wear a button down shirt (like daddy).

Wonderful, professional outfit! Just perfect.

I agree that dressing makes a difference, even in how you perform or do your job. If everyone dresses up to at least some extent (e.g., business casual), there seems to be more of a serious attitude toward the work and also a more respectful attitude toward co-workers. I work at home, and although I might wear things that are more casual than you could get away with at a workplace, everything is all carefully chosen and well put together. It makes a difference! I think that a person's self-esteem can even start to decrease if they wear a ratty jeans and an old T-shirt every day. What we wear affects us inside.

I haven't had a chance to read all the responses, but I see that you mentioned that dressing well doesn't mean that everything has to be new. I was on Imogen Lamport's site last night, and she had a post on grooming (I think it was an old one, so if you want to find it, you'll have to look in the archives). She said that grooming is what's important, even more so than having "nice" clothes. Cut off hanging threads from the clothes, make sure your shoes are clean and worn heels replaced by the cobbler, do your hair, whiten your teeth if they are stained, bathe, iron wrinkled clothes, etc. It reminded me of nuns I have visited in convents. They have only one or two habits that they wear, so fashion itself is not a tool they can use to look good, but their habits are always perfectly pressed, clean, etc., so that they project that well-put-together vibe.

Karie - thanks for your insights. That was my take in my personal experiences and in following my son's teachers. I do totally agree it's not about new, trendy, or expensive but it's about a level of appropriateness for the situation, clean and cared for dress. Again, attention to detail and situation manifesting in all areas.

Gryffin, you posed an interesting question, and one I have thought about a lot. I think that what we wear sends a message to others, and the bottom line is either I care how I look, or I don't care how I look. Your clothes don't have to be new, they don't have to be expensive, they don't have to be the latest style and you don't have to be dressed to the nine's. But you do have to look well-groomed. If you dress like you don't care, people are going to assume - guess what - that you really don't care, and not just about how you dress, but about other things too. Last year I worked with a teacher who wore jeans with holes in them (the same pair of jeans all week), a ratty old sweatshirt (different every few days), and dirty crocs (same pair) to school every day. Academically, she was the worst teacher I ever worked with. She didn't care about her lesson plans either - I think she winged it every day. Administration did finally talk to her about the way she was dressing.
So I'd say that the correlation I've found is between people who dress like they care and the quality of their work. It seems like there's a whole self-esteem/self-respect thing going on there too.

That's a great skirt.

Funny how skewed your perspective is when you're little. Or just young. Or youngish. When I was 25, I thought my 35-year-old boss looked 55. Had more to do, tho, with the amount of authority and "establishment" apparent in the way he carried himself.

Karie, congratulations on your success with the second graders!! (Both successes, I guess!!) Although, hmmm....it does make you wonder if the math teachers in your school are doing as well, LOL. Although I absolutely agree with the kids who think you look much younger than your years!

This is a fantastic outfit. Sleek (despite all the wool and fleece -- quite an accomplishment!) and very, very flattering, and professional. If I were in your audience, I would trust you completely and feel that it's no wonder those kids were learning so well under your tutelage.

Susie, skirts and fleece lined leggings are extremely cozy in winter. Joy, I was concerned that without a blazer, I didn't look professional enough!
Dee and AJ, I added the necklace to bookend so I'm glad you like it and think it pulls everything together.
Jeans can absolutely look nice and pulled together, but not with sloppy old sweatshirts. Several teachers in my building regularly come to work looking like they're ready to clean the basement or go out for a jog. I think certain styles of jeans can be included in a professional wardrobe, but only when the other elements are professional too. Even though there are a few of us that dress professionally, I feel like Stacey and Clinton from "What Not to Wear" need to come in and go through my building.

And when dress down day becomes every day, what are we going to go to next, pajama day? Long underwear day?

Good for you for raising the bar of professional dress in your school! When I was in a school district, it always made me crazy that on professional development days the teachers would say, "Well, it will be boring, but at least we can wear sweats..." Talk about boring.

Another bitter cold day in which I had to present data at a meeting on the reading growth of my school's second grade students (I teach reading only with second grade this year). Our second graders made the highest percentage of growth in reading (95%) of all schools, all grades in my district (it's a large district with 13 elementary schools)! I'm very lucky to work with a fantastic team of teachers.

For the meeting, I wore my snuggly-tweedy-warm-as-a-blanket skirt, along with a gray turtleneck, black fleece lined tights and black booties. This is the second presentation of this data that I've done, and the first time I wore more of a suit-type outfit. What never ceases to amaze me is how sloppily people dress these days. Several people at the meeting (including teachers and the principal) wore jeans and frumpled sweatshirts - and it's not even dress down day!

Funny story: During reading groups this afternoon, a student blurted out, "I think you're 45! (I'm 53). In my best shocked voice, I said, "45!!" He replied, "OK, 35!" I said, "Well, that's better." Another student piped up and said, "Honestly, Mrs. ____, you do look a bit old. Err....a bit older." HA! Out of the mouths of babes.

Pic 3 includes Cosmo Edward, who was growing impatient with outfit photos and as he apparently needed to go out to the potty. The nerve!
