tanstaafl , I don't use the cover photo feature, mostly because (aside from gear) I rarely repeat full outfits with the same accessories. For having a not-so-large wardrobe, I mix and match a LOT, so it's not particularly useful for me. I can see how it might be useful for others, though!

I thought of another benefit of tracking when I was looking at a cardigan in my closet and wondering why I hadn't worn it in a while. When I looked back at my tracking for that piece, I realized that I'd gotten rid of a lot of the pieces I used to wear with it. I still like the sweater, so now I know to be thinking about companion pieces the next time I shop.

I like to use a mixture of spreadsheets and just collected photos I've taken over time. I use the spreadsheet to track my purchasing trends and overall costs. This way I know what I need.
As for outfit ideas, I am pretty basic and don't do much. I'll browse through stored photos and use a hanger to mix and match outfits together until I find something that works.

Jenn, do you load photos of you wearing the outfits into the app? The cover photos?

Initially I used a spreadsheet too, and tracked cost and cost per wear. Then, when I got a job with lots of travel, I realized what I needed more was a *visual* system that would enable me to put together wardrobe capsules on "paper" first, before trying everything on and packing it in a suitcase. Having a visual system also helps me figure out where the holes are in my wardrobe, and whether I have orphans.

So about 4 years ago I started using PPT, but have recently moved to google slides. Either works, although PPT has the benefit of being able to crop out the background and make it transparent. I had tried some of the apps first but found the learning curve and flexibility and time investment was just too high for me. This method is much quicker and easier.

Initially to set this up I had to do google searches for items that were close enough matches to clothes/accessories I've had for years, and that did take time. But now I am in the habit of grabbing the web site image every time I make a purchase.

This enables me to play endlessly in my closet without leaving my laptop, and with it now being on google slides, I can play around with it on my phone too. I've got slides set up for "tops" "bottoms" "toppers" etc etc. I've got slides set up for capsules such as "work" "casual" "formal" "winter." If I am interested in adding an item (say testing out a new trendy piece), I can play around first with it virtually to see if it'll work with other items I already own. I think this method makes me a lot more thoughtful about my purchases as I can easily see, for example, that I already own a black V-neck sweater so I don't need another. Even if that sweater is packed away in storage for the season. No more out of sight, out of mind.

Every time I have an upcoming trip, I make a slide for it and cut and paste and rearrange and think through what to pack on "paper." This doesn't replace trying everything on before packing, but it makes the process much more efficient. When I return I note down what I actually wore and will note if an outfit felt off or needed tweaks or once again I bypassed those jeans because they are too tight in the waistband....or wish I'd brought a warmer cardigan instead because the conference room was way too cold.

I also used this slide deck recently to do a massive decluttering. I found it way easier to go through the images and make judgements about what should stay and what should go. Removed the emotions a bit.

And I keep track of WiW outside of work travel as well, though I'm a little more lax in this department. I will remember to note down new outfit combos and outfits that felt especially "right," that I want to wear again --- but don't bother with outfits I wear over and over -- because it's less about cost per wear for me and more about the creative exercise.

My Tampa trip is coming up in a few days and I've got several slides I've been playing around with as the weather has been all over the map!! I've got a slide for cooler temps and a slide for warmer!

Attached example for you--- this is the slide I put together when playing around with Angie's black, cream and olive ensemble awhile back....

@JenniNZ: "Protestant guilt"...he he!

I should also mention that I find it fun, at year's end, to go through my spreadsheet and pinpoint the purchases that I had doubts about initially, and see whether they turned out to be successful or not. I have had it happen a few times that I have bought an item almost solely because of its color (not superexcited about its silhouette or fabric), and I have seen that these purchases usually don't work out. So now I am on guard about buying an item only because I like its color. I was also able to determine early on in my wardrobe building that poor fit and not-quite-right style were the two most frequent reasons why I donated items or took them to consignment. So now I am a stickler about fit and style, to avoid unhappy purchases.

I'm an outfit tracker. For each item, I log the date purchased, the price, and each date that it is worn. I put this info in a spreadsheet and then have the spreadsheet calculate the number of times I have worn each item, how many total items I have, and the cost per wear of each item.

I do this because it helps me see trends. For instance, I bought a pair of bootcut jeans (my first pair) several years ago just as something to try. When I looked at my spreadsheet numbers a year later, I discovered that I had worn the heck out of those jeans...even though I hadn't noticed on my own how much I was wearing them. That made me ask myself what it was about the jeans that I liked. Was it that they were bootcut, or was it that they were a light wash, which was not represented elsewhere in my wardrobe? If I can pinpoint why I liked the item, I can use that info to make successful purchases in the future.

Looking at my spreadsheet also helps me identify wardrobe orphans. If I see I haven't been wearing something, I ask myself why. Maybe it's because I don't have a good support act for it. If that's the case, I can start researching what kind of support act would work well for the orphaned item and shop for said pieces.

My tracking info also helps me see how many times I am likely to wear something before I get bored or have to donate/toss the item because it is too worn. I do like to get my money's worth out of most of my wardrobe items, so I don't want to pay a lot of money for something that I know I won't be able to wear a lot before it falls apart. For instance, I don't like paying more than $100 for a pair of jeans because I know that they might very well wear out before I feel that I have gotten my money's worth out of them (I like to get things down to about a dollar per wear). I also know that I tend to get bored with an item after about three years of wearing it, so I don't want to pay more than what I feel three years of wear is worth.

I did make an exception this past year and bought a pair of jeans for $128, but I did that because I knew that they were exactly what I wanted (an embroidered pair with a rise I liked, in a wash I liked, in a length I liked, and they fit great, which hardly ever happens!). It was helpful to me to reason out that these would be a special purchase because they clicked all my "happy" boxes, and I am OK if I don't ever get down to a dollar per wear on them.

And what is the point? Well the first point was self-knowledge/self-understanding. I felt I had a degree of shopping addiction and had somehow found Recovering Shopaholic last year when I had Googled "What is a normal sized wardrobe?". Tracking wears was to try to understand why I thought I liked things ( enough to buy them) and then possibly didn't wear them? Or did I have so many of certain things ( aka "clone clothing") that I couldn't possibly get much wear out of any one? Or would I choose some of the clones much more than others, and why was that? And I had "Protestant guilt" ( from my upbringing) on how much I was spending, especially if the money was "wasted" when I didn't wear the item enough. And I was overflowing my space since we have a tiny wardrobe not even a walk-in, with off-season garments in bags in the roof space and my older daughter's vacated bedroom full of my off-season shoe boxes once those overflowed the roof space. I was something of a mess. I'm disciplined in some ways- work really hard, leave no "i"s undotted or "t"s uncrossed, have never smoked or done drugs, don't get drunk... but I felt somewhat unable to stop buying. And some of it was boredom and I found shopping relaxing and not needing too much intellectual effort. I have learned a huge amount about myself by tracking. Then I found YLF and you all made it fun again yet somehow not too tempting to keep buying as much.

I can see I'm really very simple. I'm not great with spreadsheets, since I don't use them at work. I've been tracking since May 2016, inspired by Recovering Shopaholic. I wanted to document my whole wardrobe of clothing ( not underwear and sleepwear) and shoes. I don't track bags either as not a bag girl and use the same bag daily most of the time. And I don't track jewellery as it doesn't take up space I don't have like too many clothing items or shoes do.
So I hand wrote A4 sheets. In the 18 months I've rewritten them a few times. I am showing you my autumn/spring/winter sheets and I have another set for summer. I have a separate small list where I write the year's purchases and keep the receipts. That part I have been doing since 2011.

I want to track in 2018, but disciplined habits aren’t really a good mix with me. I shall try. I am most interested right now in how many times I wear an item, so I may do a simple online spreadsheet. I want to use it as a tool to help me call things at the end of a season. This has been a particular concern due to limited space and tastes that have changed over a year or so.

I don't track all the time but would like to. I use a pencil and paper, often a notebook. I do best if I have set aside a capsule and just pull from that. Like Suz, I often change at least part of an outfit and footwear during the day and count any wear. It is very valuable and helps me to edit out items that I don't love.

It also occurs to me -- I first learned about wear tracking through baby wearing (using slings, wraps, etc to carry your child), and in that community people go pretty crazy with arcane systems denoting how long they used a particular carrier, or if they brought but didn't use, or used for a purpose other than baby wearing (scarf, hammock, etc) and on and on. So my whole perception of wear tracking is coloured by that mentality. If I were going to do it, I'd have to devise a simpler but still useful method for myself.

I'm glad you asked this question @tanstaafl! Wear tracking is a concept that's hard to get my mind around also.
It does seem like one of those exercises like the 168-hour tracker, where by doing it you learn a lot of hidden details, then you can change your behavior/habits and not repeat it again for several years.

Entered what item I wore each day, maybe added a note of the outfit worked or didn't. I do a alot of Excel, so no problem to manipulate the data and count # of wears for items.

I have been tracking my wardrobe for many years and I currently use an EXSCEL spreadsheet. I find it helpful to see how much I've spent, how much I own, and how often I'm wearing (or not wearing) my things. When I want to purge my closet, I start with my spreadsheet and target the categories that look too large to my eye. Then I'll look at items I've owned for a while and haven't worn recently to see if I still want to hold on to them. I also use the tracking information to help me see if an item was worth the price. For example, I will buy premium denim because I'll wear $150 jeans often enough to get them down to well under a $1 per wear before I purge them.

I use the Closetspace app to track. It took me a while to add my whole wardrobe, but I did it slowly as I wore old pieces or bought new ones. Now, additions are pretty simple, and tracking each day's outfit only takes seconds.

I like it for a few reasons. First, it nofollow gamifies wardrobe management for me. I use the "most worn" sort feature quite often and enjoy seeing clothing pieces "level" up into the next category (photo 1). I enjoy fashion as a hobby, and this gamification gives me an outlet besides shopping (or even window shopping, which leads to purchases often enough). I can plan outfits with my lesser-worn items and think about future replacements for those nearing the end of their lifespan.

Second, it's a handy record of what I wore when. I know most people don't pay close attention to what others wear, but it's nice to be able to look at what I wore the last time I saw someone, and make sure I do something different.

Third, the app has some built-in tracking features. It automatically records the temperature and weather conditions in my home zip code each day, so I can easily look to see previous outfits I wore when it was snowing or raining or extremely hot. I can also tag outfits for certain activities and do searches based on that.

Finally, it automatically calculates cost per wear, which I find interesting, though I don't really use that as a purchasing guideline.

Overall, it just keeps my wardrobe from getting out of hand, I like seeing the numbers, and it doesn't take a lot of time out of my day, even when I'm busy.

I've kept an Excel spreadsheet for at least five years now, listing everything in my wardrobe, by category, and with the cels filled in by color, to represent the garment color.

I find it extremely useful. If I want to buy something, I can pull up my spreadsheet, and decide if I already have something similar, or if it will work with the items and color palette I already have.

I used to track outfits, but never consistently or routinely. One very useful thing though, was that I would rate my outfits - how I felt in them. If an outfit wasn't a 10 (or a 10++++ for stuff I felt amazing in), I would make notes in a separate column, analyzing why, and what I would change the next time, to bring the outfit up to a 10.

I have the Stylebook app, and I occasionally photograph and add my wardrobe items to it. I like the visuals of outfits I've worn, but as others have already noted, it's a LOT of time getting it set up.

Fashintern:
I have about 80 tops. I will wear tops (I don't include hiking days) about 240 times a year. That means that I will wear each top 3 times a year. I would feel comfortable wearing each top more times a year, maybe 6-10 times. The problem is that I like all of my tops. I love to shop for and buy tops. But I'd also like to be prudent.

The necklace works with so many of my tops, unlike the others I own which work with very few items. I think I want more variety (but still have it be short and black) and not just reach for the same thing day after day.

I've added the Shoes page of my Wardrobe Tracker.

I use a spreadsheet for tracking my purchases. I was tracking my daily clothing wear but found I did not use the information as much as I thought I would. Cost per wear is not that important to me. I use the backward hanger system to see what items I am not wearing. I attached a screen shot of my spreadsheet to give you some ideas.

tanstaafl, yes! I think we are very much on the same page. I had wanted to ask this, but was afraid it would sound too impertinent, so thank you for posting it.

Sisi, you said that tracking helps you see where you have wardrobe holes. Do you have a notation for when you were “substituting” for something you wish you had, sort of a counterpart to Suz’s symbols for joy?
And what is “too many” items? bonnie, do you have a cut-off for “too many wears, or is it just by feel? I might think that a necklace I’d worn one quarter of the days in the year was a trademark of my style. I should probably reread what people said about how they determined what size wardrobe they want and compare.

Is this right? Suz, your tracking is connected to making sure you have all the bases covered that you need to—something for cookie-baking, something appropriate for a funeral, or for giving a commencement address. La Ped, yours is more for measuring the longevity of yours purchases, because it’s wasteful to repeatedly buy things that wear out after only a few wears. Am I understanding you both correctly?

Following this thread because I also ask myself the same questions.
I haven't done any systematic tracking, but one thing I began to do occasionally (often to post in the forum, but not always) is to take selfies of my outfits. This has helped me see things that were not working so well and which I hadn't caught just by looking on the mirror (and also to see things that were working better than I thought).

I'm terrible with spreadsheets and I don't usually track wears. But I did do it for one season and it was extremely valuable. I intend to take up the practice again -- maybe with a spreadsheet this time-- I'll see.

Some people use the closet apps -- the learning curve looked too steep for me so I have not got into that.

Daily photos are another way to track.

I do keep track of purchases -- just a list on my Notes.

I kept track of wears in a paper and pencil format. It was easiest. I just printed out all the items I (might) wear in a given season and marked each time I wore.

Unlike LaP, I felt that any wear counted, even if only for an hour. I have lots of varied roles in my life; I do sometimes need to change 3 times a day. Those varied roles either require different clothes (e.g. giving a presentation vs. going for a skate) or I get joy from wearing different clothes for them (e.g. dressing up for dinner at home now and again, even though I'm not going out).

That's the other element I might track in future: Joy per wear. You could give an item a heart if you loved wearing it. A smile if it was "good." An ambivalent face if it was just "okay" in an outfit. And so on. Paying attention to those icons could tell a person a lot about her personal style preferences over the course of a year. Forum member Caro in Oz did that some years back and learned an extraordinary amount.

I use a MAC Numbers spreadsheet that DH helped me make. It's divided into 6 pages; Shoes (subdivided into sneakers, boots, dressy, other), Bottoms (subdivided into skinny jeans, wide leg & crops, other), Tops (subdivided into dresses, layering, tunics, blouses/shirts), Toppers (subdivided into blazers, motos, knits/sweaters/ponchos, layering, and other, Outerwear, and Accessories. Each page has a place for the price, date bought, and number of wears. New items are easily added and sorted. The pages are set to record for 2016 (when I started), 2017, 2018 and space for more years to come. It does not take long to enter what I have worn each day - just a couple of minutes.
The second thing I've done is to take photos of each outfit I like before the season starts (I reuse photos from previous years if I like them, more can be added later, of course). I print 20 outfits on a page and then manually enter the date and place I've worn the outfit for. I focus on the tops and if I get creative and change the outfit, I just enter the date on the photo that features the top or topper. This takes time to prepare but is helpful for me when I choose an outfit. It helps me wear all of my clothes - I remember what I have and what I have worn to various events.
This is the second year I have done this and it has been very illuminating. This is how I discovered I have way too many Tops and Toppers, and probably just the right amount of Bottoms, Shoes, Outerwear, and Accessories. I have learned what items I wear over and over again and what I should focus my shopping on - for example, adding another black short necklace since I've worn the one I have 87 times this year instead of buying yet another top.

I start by saying that I only track my outfits of working days. Weekends would be too complicated: I can change two-three times during Saturdays and Sundays.

I made myself my spreadsheet. In the first sheet, I register my purchases during the year. Date, what, price. The following sheets are for each month. Date, and then what I am wearing subdivided into 6 categories: top-bottom-cardigan/jacket-dress-shoe-topper.

At the end of the month, of the season and finally of the year I make a summary and find out:

how many pieces of clothing I have used - generally too many!

how many pieces in each category I have - are they enough, too many, are there wardrobe holes?

how often I have worn a certain piece - if it has got many wears it is a winner -why? , if it has been worn 3/4 times in a year it is a loser - why?

I hope I have been helpful. I speak of these things only here on YLF - if people knew that I do all this fuss they would think I am paranoid.

But really, it is incredibly enlightening.
