I have bi-fold and find them quite annoying . They never seem to want to stay on track and sometimes they pop out ( occasionally losing some small doodad that is necessary for their proper function and my crawling around on the floor to find said stupid thing. Grrrrr.... ) . For my opinion regular doors that open out into the room are nicest if there's any way at all to get them . You can mount a mirror on the room side and have the inside of closet door for a valet ,for installed shoe storage,or jewelry,belts,scarves...Whoo hoo sky's the limit! Bifolds? No . They get all prissy . Don't you dare hang Anything on Me! Attitude from inanimate objects . Greaat..always need tons of THAT.And some of them have that shutter horizontal blinds look ? High Maintenance let me tell you. The fun times to be had skinning your fingers to get the slats cleaned. Oh joy!
And the slidey ones like to derail too(usually when no ones around to help you move the monster back on track...) besides the whole hiding half the closet thing .( Grams has these) and if you have more than two sections then you have to fiddle with them to get them oriented correctly. Time waster.

Donna :: that's not the problem in our case. The doors hang from the top only and we're going for system with quality sliding mechanism.

An update for those interested, we've made some bedroom plans and figured out that sliding doors will give us maximum flexibility. Although I was tempted to switch to the regular door after reading all the comments, in the end we're going with initial option and now just wait for the final offer from the store.

Thanks everyone for your valuable input.

Ha! Everyone is saying they can't see all their clothes with the sliding doors, however ours has 4 doors and I have 2 doors worth of storage. I just slide all my side back to cover DH's side No problem!

Seriously, it is a fair point if you only have a 2 door width. I love the idea of Bi-fold doors.

Haven't read all the responses, but I currently have a wardrobe with sliding doors. The closet is about five feet wide. And I absolutely hate it and curse it almost every day. :^( There's not enough room to get to all your clothes easily. (It doesn't help that there is some built-in shelving on the left-hand side of the closet, either, which means there's really only about four feet for actual clothes.) I keep the right half of the closet open, since that side displays more of my clothes, but I'm always trying to reach behind the closed side to get to the clothes that are on the left-hand side of the closet. (I keep my tops on the right, and my skirts on the left, plus out-of-season stuff on the far left.) So annoying! My previous apartment had a closet that had two folding doors on it, so I could see all the clothes at once. I much recommend the latter setup for mental health.

I have had sliding closet doors and two large doors on a closet that open. I much prefer the two large doors. You can see everything at once and, as a bonus, you can use the inside of the doors. I have hooks on mine with a hanger for belts, hanging jewelry bags with small clear plastic compartments to hold jewelry, but they can also hold any number of other small things that you might need getting dressed. Being able to fully open the doors gives better light and access to the back of the closet and upper and lower shelves.

And I was worried I asked silly question...

Sorry I can't reply to everyone individually at the moment, it's been another long day and a long weekend is ahead of us.

Thanks for the advice, but bifold doors were not an option and thinking that we now have to look maybe into that option too makes me a bit dizzy. There is so much information and when the stuff is new (in the language I'm uncomfortable with) it's so much trickier. I am tempted to stick to standard or sliding.

I never thought of needing to see all my wardrobe at once. Now that many of you have mentioned it, I'm still certain it's not a deal breaker. Nice to have, yes.

Mandipa :: the resources here are, how should I put this, overwhelming? Anything is possible. That is sometimes the problem. Too much choice.

bella :: great point about his/her side, I'll bear it in mind if we decide to go ahead with sliding.

Thanks so much.

Keep the good advice coming.

I will note that doors are a temptation to hang stuff on, clutter up the place... that's what I've got now, and that's what I've done. Lol. But I do like their old-fashioned, solid nature.

On the other hand, I can't say the sliding doors ever bothered me when I had them, although they can be heavy if they're big.

I do find bi-fold irritating. I always have trouble opening them, and they block the outside edges of the opening, unless they can be folded back around the sides.

Another vote for mirrored bifold doors! We have a walk-in now with a regular door, but I miss having a built-in mirror, and I think being able to see the whole closet wide open is a big asset.

I've had them all recently, bi-fold, sliding, and regular. If you don't have cats that are tricky with their paws, bi-fold are great. We had to rig our bi-folds to keep the paws out.
I don't like sliding because you can never see the whole of your wardrobe at once. It's a minor thing, but it matters. Right now that's what I have and I had to pick what would be visually available together. I have tanks, skirts, and shorts on one side. Dresses, jackets, and pants on the other. The shoes are basically sandals on one side and flats and closed toes on the other. Of course, whatever is in the center is really hard to see no matter which side you open. Another draw back, in my opinion.
At home in CA, I have a regular door and I like that. You can see everything at once. As a bonus, I have a valet hook hung on the inside of it, so I can hang an outfit or two together on the door, and when I close it, it's safe from kitty paws but still separated out from my wardrobe for easy grabbing.

Third vote for bifold. Our contractor tried to talk us out of them because they are uncool, but I am very happy with them. I like being able to see all eight feet of closet at once.

They are flat panel, painted the same white as the woodwork, so, unobtrusive when closed.

Sliding doors are a pet peeve of mine. Normally, opening doors can be opened far enough to let in the same amount of light as a sliding door, but one can never get both/all sliding doors out of the way at one time. Sometimes I want to open everything up and see everything, and it must be done one side at a time with sliding doors. I would choose standard opening doors or at least folding doors.

What about bifold doors? That's what I currently have and I really like them. For any closet that's wider than a door width, not being able to see the whole thing at once with siding doors is what would get to me. And bifolds don't take up as much room when open as a pair of regular doors. In fact, my dh and I leave ours open most of the time.

If space saving isn't important I would get normal doors. My sister has sliding doors (two wide big ones) and everytime I use her wardrobe I'm going crazy. For me it seems so much effort to get to the things that are on the very left (or right) side. And she has some stuff to pull out that only works when you have the door completely open. It happens to me all the time that I think it's open completely but I'm missing an inch or so and then the pull out rack gets stuck. I guess that can all be solved with a better thought out interior design, but to me normal doors give much easier access when space isn't an issue.

It's been a while since I had a non walk in wardrobe, but in the past I have had both sliding doors and regular doors. However my son's wardrobe has sliding doors and I must admit I don't enjoy them. I often want to see everything and I can't with the sliding doors. Our house is only 5 years old ( my point being the wardrobe and fixtures are all modern and current workmanship) and we have high ceilings so the wardrobes are tall and I find the doors heavy. The "grooves" at the bottom do require attention to keep them clean and to ensure the doors slide easily. They do look nice and streamlined tho.

We've had sliding doors on our closets for the last two years (on two different closets, the first one fairly large with 4 doors, and the current one slightly smaller and 3 doors). Here are some of the cons that I can think of:

1) Hubby and I share the same one wardrobe, one side his and one side mine. When try to get ready at the same time in the morning, there are times when we have to wait for our turn to pick our clothes because you can only have one side open at a time. This was less of an issue with our previous wardobe. It had 4 doors, and you could open them 2 by 2. So everyone got to work on their own side

2) This also becomes an issue if you ever want to see everything in your closet at the same time - like purging, spring cleaning, reorganization, etc. These wardrobe doors will never open all at the same time - never.

That said, I like our closets and these are minor issues, if you actually like everything else about your new set.

Things to pay attention to:
I became aware that I open and close wardrobe doors waaaaay more than I realize, so probably adjust your calculations accordingly. I would also recommend that the doors have automatic stoppers (be careful with the fingers! ouch!), be fairly lightweight and easy to pull and push and yet sturdy because you don't want them to come off their hinges with frequent use.

They are really great for saving space, but you mention that it is not an issue.

Oh, and I have mirrored doors on my wardrobes and I like them!

I'll add if I can think of anything else.

Would a hinged folding door be a possible compromise? My wardrobe plan is one where the inside is divided into two-thirds and one-third yet I did not want three doors as impossible to see around middle door to the one-third. But also v v tall as we have 11 ft closet spaces. So normal double doors would be hugely unwieldy by sheer weight. Not to mention the light issue. Folding hinged doors that also flattened were a better solution for us. I don't know resources for Gemany but at least three brands here (Blum, Hafele, Hettich) also do folded doors that slide into the sides of the closet if you have room. So imagine them going into the side walls of the wardrobe like an ironing board...? It does need that extra room at the sides we were not willing to give up.

When we first moved in I was very unsure of the mirrors. I mean.. did I really want to be greeted with my reflection first thing in the morning? Thankfully I'm not wearing my glasses when I wake

So wise Diane about the light, I never thought of that.

It would not be mirrored door though in our case, but white and bright for sure

We have always had mirrored wardrobe doors and I have always liked them. I like having an instant full length mirror for outfit inspection. I'm not sure I would have a normal opening door style if we ever had them changed. I find that they slide fairly easily too. I guess one positive point is that a lot of light is let into the wardrobe when they are opened and you can clearly see what you have, whereas a normal door may block some light.

I would appreciate some of your wisdom on yet another house-dilemma :-)

We've found great looking wardrobe with sliding doors, but I wanted to ask you for your thoughts as I've always had the wardrobes with the regular door on them only.

I have taken into account how often the wardrobe is use daily, so neither door option is preferred in that sense.

Sliding doors vs. normal doors is not consideration in terms of space-saving either.

The only reason I'm slightly hesitant is that this is two-door wardrobe, meaning both doors are quite wide and potentially not practical for everyday use when I want to access the stuff that requires one side to be fully opened. But then again, it comes down to organising things cleverly, doesn't it.

Thanks in advance.
