Remember what I learned the hard way . Seasons are not the same in 4 season climates. I have way too many hot summer clothes and few transitional clothes with sleeves. Summers are cooler in general in Colorado than in the Midwest. Our weather is more like Chicago or even Maine. I need very few things to wear for hot weather and most of my cool spring or fall things could work. I think global warming may make a difference but maybe less than I'd hoped. As of now I wear a jacket most of the day.. Don't let Menopause fool you. You will eventually lose the excess weight and be more feeble than before.

The donating situation is a difficult one. I have been trying to buy thrifted items more often in the past few years but still only have about 7 pieces out of my 150-ish. It’s not much is it?!
I also try to donate some to the better thrift stores especially my better quality items like one good pair of boots with a slightly too high heel for me which had not reached the #30 wears. It’s the more worn out things that I put in the “clothing bin” for convenience where I have no control over whether they become rag recycling or are sold in store or go to Papua New Guinea that bother me. If I didn’t put them there though, then they would go straight to landfill from here. Which doesn’t seem a good solution either.
Thank you quietloud for mentioning the donation conundrum in your post!

I also have an analytical brain and have been keeping track of my wardrobe since 2021 in a spreadsheet including all purchases and removed items. I split it into the following capsules (which include shoes and are split into clothing type within the capsules):
- Work - 68 pieces
- General Life - 76 pieces (this has got a bit big if I'm honest)
- Exercise - 23 pieces
- Home - 29 pieces

I don't keep numbers for accessories (bags, belts, scarves, gloves, hats, jewelry) or what I call basics (underwear, bras, camis, sleepwear) but do track my purchases in those categories each year.

Work and general life have some crossover pieces. I feel reasonably content with my work clothes at the moment so that size is probably about right as I like a reasonable level of variety but still want to get the wear out of things. My general life clothes have blown out a bit and I will probably explore what I think some of the reasons are for that on a separate post sometime.

So for work/general combined I think my ideal numbers are probably somewhere between 120-140 items.

I generally run one-in-one-out on exercise clothing unless I'm having a genuine bottleneck.

My home clothes are what I put on when I'm not going anywhere or when I get home from work. The tops tend to be demoted from general life when they no longer meet my quality/style requirements in that capsule. The only thing I buy especially for this capsule are trackpants. To be honest not everything is getting worn in that group but then as others have mentioned I don't want to donate them as they are likely to become waste so I'm trying to wear them out.

For my work and general life clothes I am generally ready to move on from a piece before it is 'worn' out so have been donating them to a local hospice shop that sells second hand items. I see my pieces on the racks when I'm browsing so hope that others are purchasing them. I've also been purchasing a lot more second hand pieces (50% of my 2024 purchases so far) so am hoping that I am doing my bit by keeping others pieces cycling through the system.

It is a great analysis. I have been tracking my wardrobe in different ways since 2010, but daily since 2016. I started after my father had died and I had put about a third of my inheritance in a separate clothing account- we paid some off the mortgage with another third and took an overseas holiday with the final third. So I kept track of what I was spending on clothes since then, to see how long the money would last. I later got rid of the 2010 records sadly but still have them since 2011. That record keeping didn’t help me to not buy too many items though even if most were on sale so that eventually in 2016 I found Recovering Shopaholic and from there YLF. At that stage I had about 200 items including clothes (not underwear, sleepwear and bags) and shoes. Tracking daily and assessing fit and what didn’t suit me helped me get down to around the 150 point gradually. I found I had too much summer stuff as I love bright colours so have slowly bought less of that.
My clothes seem to last a very long time with these numbers. I am also scared about donating and contributing to landfill- much of our donated clothing goes to Papua New Guinea where it is both appreciated and unappreciated by various communities there.
I would like to have a little less but not much less, as I like variety. Trying to wear everything 30 times or more has stopped me purchasing anything so far this calendar year.

Sal - yes, I really do need to double down on my shoe game! I've started making a list of alternatives to try, so hopefully a systematic approach will yield some results. Buying in store is hopeless for me unfortunately, because they never carry my size here. I used to work in a pretty large shoe store years ago, and even then I could barely find shoes to fit me except for sneakers and the odd Ecco from the children's department. Such a waste of employer discount, lol! And ordering online can be such a hassle because of expensive returns, so I feel like it requires a lot of dedication. But now that I feel like the rest of my wardrobe is functioning well, I might have the mental space for it!

My numbers are very similar to you - 100 ish plus scarves hats etc… I have more activewear gear - close to 50. This works well for me - I like to have options and love clothes - but don’t have the space - mental or physical - for any more.

I have been tracking wears for almost two years. I do it on a spreadsheet and it has helped inform me where to put my money. I do have most of my closet in finds too.

It sounds like you have the great foundation there - maybe shoes should be a real focus - brands that work for your feet. I too have five pairs of heels that I don’t wear often - but I don’t want to get rid of them…..

Star - it seems like our ideal wardrobe is similar in size. It’s very true what you say about pieces lasting longer when you have more, as I noticed the opposite when I had a very small wardrobe. I got very tired of replacing things all the time, which is partly how I concluded that a slightly larger wardrobe is better for me. I’m impressed that the majority of your purchases is second hand, that is definitely a goal of mine going forward, and I love that you aim to wear things out instead of purging just for the sake of it.

Dee - yes, having my wardrobe with me on my phone when shopping was definitely part of my drive to catalogue it all, super handy! I very much get the desire for variety, sometimes I have to remind myself that dressing isn’t only utilitarian, as I can get a bit strict with myself. It helps if I think of it as a hobby too, and something that adds enjoyment and quality of life.

Bonnie - that sounds like a sensible number of additions. I’ve added a lot over the past two years as I have undergone a big shift, but I imagine I’ll end up somewhere similar.

Joy - I would absolutely recommend, it’s already been super helpful!

Irina - I have tracked my buys for a few years on Pinterest as well (which made the task of uploading pictures now much easier), but I haven’t been diligent enough with it, and would also forget about the boards completely, as my Pinterest is all too cluttered (another thing to organize, sigh!).

Roberta - I’m impressed that you have been keeping records for so long! I hope I am able to stick with it as well. I’ve added a lot of pieces in the past couple of years as I’ve been going through a big style/life shift, but I am hoping to keep my additions per year in the single digits as well going forward.

Runcarla - you’ve actually inspired me with some of your previous posts to start counting wears as well, so I’m trying to remember to add my outfits to the app every day. So far so good! Like you I’d also say that about 1/3 of my wardrobe are high rotation pieces - some items are just easier to reach for no matter how much you have, I think.

Suz - the amount of roles and activities you have in your everyday life certainly plays a huge part in how your wardrobe needs to function. It seems our ideal number is similar - at my current 127 I feel I am right on the cusp between having enough and lacking that extra fizz.

Allora - I think the great part of tracking your wardrobe is becoming more aware of your needs, whatever they may be, and it’s definitely been eye opening for me. Around 100 items sounds like a good sized wardrobe. A part of me feels guilty about wanting a slightly larger wardrobe, I think because I live somewhere where overconsumption is a massive problem (I read that the average wardrobe size here is more than 350 garments), and I don’t want to be a part of that.

I love this because I’m also a numbers person. I started a wardrobe inventory list about 7 or 8 years ago, just with a spreadsheet. Then I started tracking actual purchases maybe 3 years ago, which has been very eye-opening! I was just doing some list updates today and am currently at 56 items not including outerwear, shoes, accessories, gear, PJs, lingerie or bags. I’d probably be around 100 items with those extras included. It’s a good wardrobe size for me and I would actually like to get it even a little smaller. Many of my things were purchased at consignment but still a lot purchased new (much more than I’d like).

This is a terrific analysis and your goals seem well considered.

I also live in a 4 season climate, although the seasons are less extreme than they were in the climate where I used to live. My multiple roles require me to dress differently on different occasions -- sometimes I'm classroom teaching (in various settings), sometimes I'm a student, sometimes I'm making presentations (I'm a writer) in different settings -- from pubs to panels to podiums. I travel often locally, and several times a year to more distant locations, where activities might range from public-facing presentations to gallery-hopping and theatre going to hiking in the woods or beachcombing. And sometimes (usually, these days) I am quietly working from home, or teaching online. So I need a certain amount of variety and a high degree of mix-and-match in my wardrobe.

Over the years, I've tracked wears at various times and considered what works best fo rme, and has become abundantly clear to me that my ideal wardrobe size is around 150 items, not including scarves, jewellery, gear, base layers, PJs, undies, or gloves, bags, but including coats, jackets and other toppers, knits, shirts/ blouses/ other tops, dresses, pants, skirts, shorts, and footwear.

If I go too far over 150, I don't wear things as much as I would like before I tire of them. If I go below 130, I'm usually lacking something I turn out to need and I miss the variety and the fizz.

I don't have a lot of placeholders in the closet, although I do have a few HEWIs (highly elusive wardrobe items --- things I'd love to find) and a few less-than-pristine items that I can't bear to part with because the right upgrade has not appeared yet.

This is some serious and thoughtful closet wrangling! Well done, you! Cudos on the portion of me-made and thrifted items. That 120-150 item number seems to be a comfortable figure. My closet was in that range when I worked outside the home, but is smaller now.

All my clothes and most accessories are in Finds. 90 items - not counting socks and underpinings or fitness kit, and they are ‘newer’. With the exception of accessories, and thrifted items, most of my stuff is <5 yo. I chalk this up to a change in lifestyle and a change in body shape/size over time. Some clothing styles can accommodate size changes, but others do not - so need replacing. I’m on the cusp of a size change, so have paused shopping until things stabilize.

Even with a small number of items, I find myself wearing certain things much more than others. I ‘count wears’ and figure 1/3 of my garments are in high rotation.

FWIW, some of my best/most loved statement pieces have been thrifted. I think folks can wear basics into the ground, but unusual pieces are harder to style and more likely to be donated in good condition.

I also enjoyed your thoughtful analysis very much. I have kept spreadsheets of my shopping and overall wardrobe for the last decade, which began as an attempt to control my shopping and prevent purchasing of things I already own. That was very helpful, but it didn't really stop me from accumulating a very large wardrobe! I had moved into a condo with exuberant closets compared to my house which had 1950s closets. When I moved again 5 years ago my closets were much smaller, and I had to weed all over again.

I also like keeping track of what is winter versus summer weather clothing. As you say of your own climate, Chicago has "lots of weather". I have been reducing my shopping every year since I retired, which is a worthy goal, but I am not yet at the number I'd really like to achieve, which is a single digit! I did purge over a hundred things last year, and felt really good about that, although my closet is still very full. As of this morning, I have 236 articles of clothing and 65 accessories and shoes.

I don't have photographs or pins of everything I own, but I have kept track on Pinterest of everything I've bought over the last 6 years. I go back in and cross off the things that I have given away or worn out. It keeps me cognizant that I don't keep pieces of clothing all that long. That is a goal I have going forward. The truth is, I could not buy anything for another 5 years and be perfectly fine.

You’ve done an excellent job organizing and counting your wardrobe! What a huge task!
I have 99% of my wardrobe in Pinterest, I don’t include loungewear, gym clothes or swimwear. And my numbers are higher :)
I have Pinterest boards by seasons, colors and years. What can I say, I like data My yearly purchase boards go back to 2018 and it’s interesting (to me) to see longevity of pieces in my wardrobe.

I really enjoyed reading your wardrobe review. I keep track of my wardrobe on a Numbers track sheet my DH made for me and on my computer's Photos. I haven't done total numbers of categories but I can see it's way higher than I'd like. I have two of those Pax wardrobes full of clothes. I overbought for many years and am now limiting my purchases to get where I'd like to be. This is my third year of low buy and have added only 9 items each year. I am making progress in feeling comfortable getting wears from what I have so I feel OK about letting them go. I, too, am concerned about adding to pollution. I'm thinking that adding six tops/dresses, two pair of shoes, two bottoms, and one topper each year will be enough to make me happy updating my wardrobe each year. That way I'll still wear what I have but also get to enjoy new items.

Very interesting analysis, and a great way to sort out what’s working or not with your wardrobe and where you might need additional items.

I have tried a wardrobe app way back in the past, and it ended up taking up too much space on my phone, was pretty time consuming to do and so I gave up on it.

I currently have a good portion of my wardrobe on YLF “Finds” and try to update when I purchase anything new. I like the various ways I can sort items using the collections and capsules. Certainly handy to have when I’m out shopping too as I sometimes have a tendency to forget what I already own.

My wardrobe is pretty large by most standards, I have 4 seasons to dress for, like variety and I tend to keep my clothes for a very long time. Anything new is carefully considered and must mix and match with what I already own. A recent cull has me feeling pretty good with where my wardrobe is at right now.

As someone who has a handle on my wardrobe numbers this was an interesting read for me. I also live in a 4 season climate. My ideal size is 130 to 150 pieces max (also excluding sleepwear, shoes, bags, accessories). I have 260. I have not been doing any major shopping for years. Many of my pieces are 10 to 20 years old but still in good condition. The more you have the longer they take to wear out. I have been trying to do '1 in 2 out' for the last couple of years and have had a fair amount of success. I shop 2nd hand 95%. I have way too many T's and tops. Shoes are also a bug bear for me. My feet have become difficult. I did the 'would I buy this now' on my wardrobe and exactly 130 pieces were Yes. However I would never purge 130 items of clothing all at once. They do still get worn. Also I have two sizes in my wardrobe due to weight fluctuation over the years. I love that your wardrobe pieces co-ordinate so well with each other. That is my goal going forward. And definitely no need to feel embarrassed that you are using the same leather bag for so many years regularly. In my book that is commendable and imo leather bags should last for many years!

After being in our current house for close to two years, and renovating for most of the past year, I have finally gotten around to a deep organization of my wardrobe. Over this past week I’ve gone through it all. I’ve sorted through my purgatory boxes where I put all pieces that I am unsure about for a holding period (some of the stuff in there had been there since before our last move, and most of it was two sizes to small), and culled about 20 pieces from there (hoping that my sisters will be interested in most of it, as I hate donating to thrift stores for fear of contributing to third world fabric pollution). I organized my out of season boxes (I have two baskets on top of my wardrobes for the most season specific items like shorts/swimsuits/flipflops and heavy sweaters/scarves/gloves/hats). As I was going through it all I decided to download a wardrobe app (I went with Indyx) and start cataloguing everything, to get a real overview of my wardrobe. I have tried this in the past with StyleBook (and to some degree Finds here on YLF), but I’ve never been thorough enough to get everything in there, and felt like starting fresh.

Anyway, this might not be interesting to anyone but me, but I thought I’d share some numbers now that I’m done. My total wardrobe size was not too far off from what I had thought, maybe slightly larger, at 127 items. This excludes socks and underwear, pyjamas (3 sets), workout gear (less than 10 pieces), swimsuits (none of which fit me and need a separate sorting through), merino base layers, and jewelry, but includes everything else (clothes, outerwear, loungewear, shoes, bags, accessories).

More specifically it looks like this:

Wardrobe total - 127 pieces

Tops - 48

Tanks/camisoles - 7

Tees - 11

Shirts - 4

Blouses - 7

Turtlenecks - 6

Sweaters/cardigans - 10

Vests/slipovers - 3

Bottoms - 25

Trousers - 11

Joggers - 1

Jeans - 6

Skirts - 4

Shorts - 3

Dresses - 5

Outerwear - 8

Wool coats - 3

Trenchcoats - 2

Raincoats - 1

Jackets - 2

Shoes - 20

Sneakers - 5

Flats - 3

Boots - 3

Sandals - 4

Heels - 5

Bags - 4

Crossbody - 2

Totes - 2

Accessories - 17

Scarves - 10

Gloves - 2

Hats - 4

Sunglasses - 1

My physical wardrobe space is an Ikea Pax wardrobe in our bedroom (1 piece with double doors 1m wide, and 1 piece with single door 50cm) where I keep everything (including the uncounted items and also my jewelry box) except for the current season’s coats and shoes, which are in the hallway closet. This is plenty of space, and after organizing I have several drawers and shelves empty.

I live in a distinct four seasons climate (with a lot of weather). I rotate my wardrobe by season (with most pieces overlapping several seasons), and when sorting the pieces by seasons tags in the app I found I had 63 spring pieces, 54 summer pieces, 76 fall pieces and 49 winter pieces, which means I have between 49 and 76 active pieces in my wardrobe at any time. Thinking it through it seems like a well functioning wardrobe for me has a minimum of 60 pieces, so judging by that it seems I should focus on adding to my summer and winter wardrobes.

Out of everything there are about 15 pieces +/- that I see as placeholders. These are pieces that I wear and that serve a clear purpose in my wardrobe, but that I don’t love, and would like to replace with better suited versions when appropriate.

19 of my pieces are things that I made myself (either knitted or sewed) and 21 pieces are vintage or second hand. Both of these numbers feel low, and are way lower than it’s been in the past. Ten years ago my wardrobe was predominantly thrifted and selfmade, but in the last five years convenience have become a higher priority, sadly.

The oldest (to me) item in my wardrobe are a pair of vintage heels that I bought in the early 2000’s, I must have been around 18-20. I didn’t start wearing them much until my 30’s, but in the past decade they have been well loved. After that is a vintage leather crossbody bag that I thrifted in London in 2008, and still (embarrassingly?) wear as my everyday bag. A lot of my pieces were purchased in the last couple of years after a big lifestyle/body/style shift, but I do still have quite a few pieces from 2013 and onwards.

The most surprising category, and the least functional, is definitely shoes. I can’t believe I have 20 pairs of shoes, and yet am constantly struggling with which shoes to wear. I wear heels maybe 2-3 times a year, and still I have 5 pairs. They are all comfortable though, and versatile, so I’m definitely keeping them all, and hoping that I’ll never have to buy a pair of heels again. Out of all the shoes there are probably only 4 pairs that I wear regularly, so this is by far the least hard working category of them all. I have always struggled with shoes though. I have fussy feet (wide forefoot, super high arches, narrow heel) and wear a size US5, which is not readily available where I live. This, paired with a picky sense of style, has apparently resulted in a fairly useless shoe wardrobe.

The hardest working categories arewithout a doubt outerwear and bags. I love and wear the hell out of all of the pieces I have, and could absolutely stand to add several items here.

Overall I feel like I currently have a (mostly) well functioning, basic wardrobe. I can easily make seasonal capsules, and everything mixes and matches. I absolutely do not need any more t-shirts, tank tops, turtlenecks, black trousers or basic jeans. What I feel is still lacking a bit is the more unique, emotional, statement pieces that add interest to a wardrobe, so this is where my focus will be going forward. I feel like I have both the mental and physical space to add some more pieces, but I want to do this very carefully and intentionally, focusing on second hand and selfmade first, and high quality investment pieces second. No fast fashion.

I’m curious to know if you keep track of your wardrobes like this? All in all I don’t feel like specific numbers matter that much, but I have an analytical brain that likes to break things down, so for me it’s both entertaining and gives me the clarity that I enjoy. What size would you say your ideal wardrobe would be? Are you close to that, or do you feel like you have too much or too little? Based off my own analysis I’d say my ideal wardrobe would be around 150 pieces. That would give me seasonal capsules of around 60-75 pieces and be versatile enough to cover my needs as well as having enough statement pieces to keep things interesting, while also being relatively manageable and uncluttered in size. Would love to hear your thoughts!
