I love the idea of thinning out your wardrobe and giving your clothes "room to breathe". Feel like that is what has been bugging me about my own wardrobe lately, with too many shirts hiding under others on hangers, leading me to forget about them. I feel a thinning coming on ...

Your closet must feel like a fresh breeze just blew through. How great! Your capsules are legendary and inspiring, but be careful of hole-filling for the sake of a more perfect spreadsheet.

Jenni NZ, maybe you’d want to wear your sweaters more often if you had some that weren’t so “sweaty”. Those chunky knits do sound good for cold, cold days though.

PS this morning I said I had 164 items, this afternoon I have 163 as I donated one pair of shoes today from 2012 with 40 wears- still nice, good condition, comfortable but not worn much this year and last. I decided to create space in the shoe rack by one!

Thank you for the numbers Anchie! Fascinating.
It’s interesting to me that we both mainly wear tops and pants to work, with blazers for you and “jackets” for me ( I don’t like formal blazers on me and tend to take the softer jackets off quite quickly at work), but I wear far more soft tops because I find I get too hot in what you call “sweaters”. ( We call those “jumpers” or “jerseys” in NZ, I know the different words for the same things in English is tricky! ) I only wear those on the coldest days in winter, mine tend to be wool either merino or a thicker chunkier wool.
I count most of my loungewear in my normal clothes apart from the very oldest yuckiest stuff which is for gardening or fence painting or similar jobs. I don’t have specific exercise wear as I mainly just walk.
So my similar numbers in your categories are:
Tops 21+14=35.
“Shirts” 2
“Sweaters” ( includes cardigans) 16.
Pants 9+5=14.
Jeans 3
Shorts 2
Skirts 7
“Tunics” ( usually worn like tops, with pants underneath) 4+6=10
Dresses 6+9=15
Jackets 7+6=13
Waistcoats or vests 4
Outerwear 2-one coat, one puffer. My old 2004 raincoat is gearish and not counted.
Shoes 40.
Your handbags belts and scarves I don’t count.
My 2 lists are one list for autumn/winter/spring, the first of each number above, and summer, the second of each number above. Obviously they overlap a bit in late spring and early autumn when I might wear some things from my summer lists.
So my total similar to yours is 163.
I clearly have too many dresses and have tried to buy fewer, as I wear them seldom.

Great job! It's a great opportunity to assess what works and what can be donated or even sold. My wardrobe is smaller, 88 pieces including bags and scarved, but it works quite well as I have around 40-42 pieces for each quarter (bags, scarves and some outwear can overlap or be used in different quarters).

Enjoy the journey for your revamped wardrobe and keep us posted on the developments!

Jenni NZ - here is break down of my numbers if you are interested. I went from 264 down to 208. Out of those 25 items are in my loungewear capsule - mostly tees, sweat pants, shorts and house shoes that I don’t wear outside of house. Remaining 183 items are in followoing categoris:
Blouses/Shirts:9
Sweaters: 33
Pants:18
Jeans:6
Skirts:6
Dresses:6
Blazers:18
Outerwear:18
Shoes:30
Handbags:17
Belts: 6
Scarves: 16
Everything is split in 6 capsules, 3 for spring summer, 3 for fall winter and every capsule has 7 tops, 3 blazers, 3 outerwear, 3 pants, 1 jenas, 1 skirt, 1 dress , 1 belt and 5 shoes. Also almost every capsule has 3 handbags and 3 scarves. I see here some holes to fill :)

Well done! I am interested in how big it was and your previous one-in-one out.
Mine is a bit smaller than yours I think at 164 counted items- but that doesn’t include bags ( as I wear the same one almost every day and most are clutches I have collected over decades but use seldom) or scarves ( which I have a drawer-full, gradually collected but seldom worn).
I know that you are also a wear tracker, as am I for the past over 4 years. I don’t have weight fluctuations though, I lost 4 kg last year and another one this year but my elastic waist pants still fit the same.
I still find it hard to wear my clothes enough, aiming for the #30 wears, so I feel my wardrobe is still too big? This winter, I have been avoiding many of my tops that already had over 30 wears so I could get wears up on other tops. There are 8 I haven’t worn, as I have been trying to wear the other 10! So I am feeling that 18 winter tops is probably more than I need. I haven’t given away the 8 because I still like and fit them. This plan is mostly working out but won’t for ever because I will get bored. And I did edit out another 3 tops, 2 worn 30 times each but getting a bit worn-looking or I was sick of them, plus one from 2010 that was hardly worn but I didn’t like it any more.
I think the smaller wardrobe and more space sounds a good stress-relieving plan! Over time I hope to reduce further-I have only added 5 items in the 7 months of 2020.

Thank you all. Yes, it does feel liberating. I think this is more manageable size and that it will fit better both my life and my storage. I should have done this long time ago. Amount of items that needs replacing is also much smaller and it will be fun and not stressful working on that. I now have a clear priorities and direction for the future. 11 items are already gone and removed from finds. Here is the rest that is going soon.

I have been spending this hot weekend playing in my closet, analyzing and reorganizing. My whole wardrobe contains exactly 264 items and this is counting almost everything. It includes belts, handbags, scarves, shoes and loungewear. Only categories that are not included are underwear, pajamas, swimsuits and a small exercise capsule.
I am happy with about 1/3 of my wardrobe. 1/3 is OK - it is not perfect but can still be worn or requires minimal alterations. 1/3 is just way too big and I havent worn it for over a year. At first I thought that I need to replace everything in this group and it was stressing me. But then it hit me that I actually don’t. I haven’t worn it for over a year, and yes, this year was strange and I had very different needs, but I think I can safely say that I can get dressed without those items. I decided to just donate almost 1/4 of my wardrobe. There are only few things that I would still prefer to replace so I am not donating the whole group but exactly 56 items. Quite a few black items among them. I love to have everything visible in my closet but things were getting crumpled. Now my clothes have room to breathe. My needs and wardrobe holes are much more clear and I feel relieved. I don’t plan to donate everything immediately, because I still have fear that my weight will go up, but just having everything removed from closet and out of sight feel so much better. For years I have been maintaining the same wardrobe size, because I was doing one in one out. I will continue to do that in the future to maintain this smaller wardrobe size.
