Oh, those pictures are so satisfying! And what a good idea to separate your short sleeve and long sleeve tops, I must do that. I'm always rummaging through the tops to find one variation or another. I have them organized by color, of course. And I also have the shopping bag slowly filling up with things to be donated. I keep my leather jackets in the coat closet, because to me they feel more like true outerwear.

Oh! And I also took at least a dozen items to be tailored (split the work between two different tailors here as I'm trying a new local recommendation). And I bought more of those blue-green hangers and have retired the black ones to the guest room and to give away a bunch to my local "no buy" group! So closet update is truly in progress.

Thanks, everyone!

I have taken a look at the Athleta "cypress" items, and I do love the color. They're pretty gear-ish, though, and I am not looking for that kind of item right now.

I tried on about a half dozen burgundy items at the Rack yesterday -- yes, they are starting to appear at retail! -- but none of them spoke to me. So maybe forest and teal will reappear too...

You're wise to hold on to tops your not sure of at least until we are settled into the new weather season.

Echoing Roberta to check out the cypress colour at Athleta ... It is absolutely gorgeous and might be a perfect cool deep green for you!

My hangers are only plastic (black plastic) but are all the same, which does feel cohesive.

And because I am a visual person I thought I’d share pics in case anyone else likes organized closet photos. Haha!

1 Jackets and blazers
2 Tops and vests
3 Knitwear — tees and sweaters
4 Pants and jeans
5 Pile for the tailor
6 Bag of stuff to donate

There is more I can do, I’m sure, but this is a solid start. Funny how the photos show a very clear color palette preference!

Tonight I dove a little deeper. A couple of sweaters I’m not feeling anymore (both itchy and very bulky) and some blouses that feel too office-y are going away.

I also have a pile of things to take for alteration. A few tops that are near-tunic length that I know I will wear more if I just get them shortened. A couple of pairs of pants that are too big in the waist, and another that needs hemming, and one needs the legs narrowed a little (they’re too wide and floppy). And a top with elbow length sleeves that always feel a little frumpy on me, so I’m going to have them shortened to a short angled sleeve instead. These are all items I like and will wear more if I make these changes, so I think it’s a good investment.

I have all my jackets on wooden hangers, skirts and a few trousers on wooden clip hangers, and everything else is on thin velvet hangers. It has always bugged me a little that aome of my hangers are blue, some black, and then there are a few white and a few brown. I don’t even know why I ended up with all those different colors, but I’m actually thinking of buying all the same color hangers for my tops, which are currently on a mix of black and blue hangers. White ones I use for dresses and the brown ones hold vests. I just kind of want to see all the tops on the same color hanger. Does that seem a little obsessive? I may have just a touch of OCD, LOL!

Also, fwiw, I feel like slimmer jeans (not necessarily stretchy skinnies that I didn't really wear in the first place) will be back soon and I am keeping mine at the ready.

Good action Janet! It feels good to be on top of what you have in the closet and holding zone. I will go through mine shortly too - bit later than usual this year due to travel and a cool spring.

Jeans with a good fit and rise are worth keeping.

I note blazers are trending to more waisted styles. Will be interesting to see how that unfolds.

Thanks, everyone! I have some down time today — I may take a good look at my tops. They’re my largest category and I’ve already pulled out a few that are being demoted to camping/sleepwear.

I think my pants and jeans situation is pretty good. I looked through them while putting away the shorts, and I’m pretty happy with what I have. My straight leg jeans (close to skinnies) have been in the holding zone for the past year and I’m keeping them that way. I’m not letting go of them because they have the oh-so-elusive mid rise and they fit fine. I am loving wider legged jeans and decided I’d like a darker wash pair. I brought home the pair of COH Paloma jeans below. The rise is high, BUT the fit is really good and they are not too stretchy. They are at the tailor now getting hemmed. Oddly enough, I’ve realized I do not like very stretchy high rises. They sort of bag out in the tummy area and make it look like I have more of a belly than I do. It may seem counterintuitive but a slightly stiffer denim or other blend works better on me with a high waist.

I hate to let go of blazers because they’re expensive and can be a challenging fit, but in recent years I let a few go because I just felt like I had moved on from them. I’m wondering if the Veronica Beard is heading that way too, but it’s so classic I’m going to give it some time. I think I only wore it once last year.

Well done! It is still too hot here to consider *wearing* heavier clothes, but I enjoyed looking at them occasionally. Yesterday I wore jeans to a night Cubs night game (W) and was very glad there was a steady breeze.

Lisa is bang on about keeping blazers. As long as mine don't have massive shoulder pads I don't worry too much about their stylishness.

Great job getting everything sorted for the change in seasons. I'm a fan of holding zones for items, as long as you have the space, because style preferences change over time. Blazers are usually pricey so it's a great idea to not edit those out too quickly.

Sounds like you have done a thorough review and are ready for Fall. Good idea not to be too hasty with some of the blazers, a holding zone is a good idea until you are 100 percent sure. With regard to Forest Green and Burgundy, I did mention on your other thread about the Vivienne Files Blog. I looked at it again and the supplier is Land's End. I cannot access this website from Europe but it seems they do have quite a few interesting pieces, in particular a sleeveless vest in forest green you may like. Also a forest green/cream striped button down that looks quite cool, and various burgundy items.

I took an hour or so this week to do a small review and edit in my wardrobe. I looked carefully through all my jackets and the few blazers and vests I have. Nothing got put in the donate pile, but one went in the camping/Airstream capsule (it lives in the closet of the Airstream so no longer occupies closet space), and several went into the holding zone.

The ones that went into the holding zone are fitted and feeling a little snug or are just not styles I’m feeling at the moment (my red plaid Veronica Beard dickey blazer for example). I’m hanging onto them because I still like them and feel I may want them again in the future. Cool weather is just starting, so I don’t want to be hasty unless I’m quite certain I’m over a style.

I rearranged the remaining jackets so they are lined up by color. I used to have them divided into bombers, motos, blazers, etc. They do look more organized this way, so I’ll see if this helps my closet feel more cohesive.

I put away my shorts and most summery pants, and pulled out my knitwear from out-of-season storage, and I don’t really see much to let go of, since I did a pretty good edit last year. There is definitely a gap in color I would like to have. I have a lot of blue, and some neutrals. I’d like to find a good lightweight option in solid burgundy and one in a deep cool green of some sort, but so far nothing has come up. I’ll keep an eye out.
