We have school supplies taken care of but i haven't done any school clothes shopping for him yet. I'm pretty positive he'll still fit into his pants from last year and all his t shirts currently still fit. I bought new shoes when i saw some go on clearance at Target months ago...

So really i think we just need the chillier weather things. Though i never even thought about a raincoat! That's a good idea.

That list seems reasonable to me, especially if you do laundry often.

Just had a closer look at it. 2 sweatshirts seem too little to me. Because they are a top layer I find they get dirty a LOT. (If I am going away for a week's holiday, I'd take about 4 for each child) Might depend on your DD's cleanliness though!

MPJ I can't help from personal experience as my kids have school uniforms, but I remember seeing a list from Flylady that could be of use (this is a variation on her list)

Elisabeth - HA - NE is New England...I didn't even think about NE = Nebraska. lol Kids have to turn 5 by September 1 to start kindergarten, both my girls missed the cut off. I did round up with my daughter's age; she doesn't turn 7 for a few months yet.

Over the years, I've become very much a minimalist with my wardrobe. I'd love to apply that to my daughters' wardrobes as well, if only to make dressing in the morning easier. I KNOW that some things are not worn because they don't like them, etc., so by shopping with a set number of items in mind, and including her in the process more, I hope to have a fully used wardrobe for her. Isn't there a 70/30 situation that applies to a lot of wardrobes - something like only 30% of the wardrobe is actually used? That might be okay if your size is relatively stable, and you mix things up occasionally, but when you're still growing, I hate for things to go unworn. Such a waste!

I'm more looking for hard numbers of what works for people...I did see one list that had promise (with minor tweaking):
* 4 pairs of jeans
* a pair of yoga pants
* 5 long sleeve shirts
* 2 short sleeve shirts
* 2-5 dresses with leggings
* 2 hoodies or sweaters
* package of socks
* package of undies
* 3 pairs of jammies
* snowsuits with hats/mittens/boots
* sneakers, fall boots, 2 pairs of ballet flats

That seems like a much more manageable list then her current wardrobe inventory (overflowing drawers). Fortunately I invested in a Land's End "grow-with-me" snowsuit, which will serve her again this year, and she's covered for a few other items on the list, but jeans, for example all need to be longer (my beanpole!).

Thanks for all your responses, it has been an interesting read!

My DD is 8 and also refuses to wear jeans. Despite them having stretch and the adjustable waistbands, she finds them difficult to button and unbutton (whereas most boy's jeans have snaps up until size 16), and they tend to slip down a bit in back when she sits, and they aren't nearly as comfortable as leggings and stretch pants. So my DD's uniform consists of stretch pants of various colours and patterns and tunics or short dresses to go over the top. A person can find plenty of these things at places like Target or department stores, and they allow her to run and play and flip upside down at recess as well as paint and do crafts because they are made of jersey knits that wash and wear very well.

I imagine at some point she will be more interested in fashion or in wearing what the other kids are wearing, but for now she really prefers her stretch pants and tunics. The teachers commonly tell me how cute she looks, so she feels fashionable and comfortable for now.

Almost everything else depends on your climate. My kids need sweatshirts or light jackets, winter coats, snowpants, boots and at least two pairs of shoes for school. Two pairs because one never knows when a child will step in a puddle without wearing boots and need dry shoes for the next day! Schools here don't make the kids go out for recess when it is raining or when there are below zero temps.

Wow, they must start school really late in Nebraska -- my daughter is eight (but will be nine in November) and she's starting fourth grade! Mind you I know they start late in some of the Scandinavian countries, too, and they all end up in the same place by age sixteen (or so the research shows, according to my Danish friends).

Back to clothes. I don't know what your daughter already has, and what she likes to wear. Mine wore only skirts and dresses until grade two, because she said pants were uncomfortable. Now she's discovered jeans with stretch and things have changed.

It also depends on what you want her to wear. Do you want her to blend in with the other kids? Will she care if she stands out? If so, what do they wear? Do you want her to get herself dressed in the morning? Because that sort of thing is easier to do with jeans, or leggings and a tunic than with skirts and tights.

Assuming you're starting from scratch, I would include things like nice jeans, pull-on skirts, cute tights that don't clash with the skirts (kids' clothing can be a riot of pattern and colour, so it's easier to stick to patterned tights and solid skirts or vice versa), a variety of jersey knit pull-on tops, and maybe a simple jersey dress or two. Also, good quality leggings with long tops/tunics are a comfy choice for kids.

Then you need a pair of running shoes for gym class, a pair of boots for snow, a pair of boots for rain, and some maryjanes or ballet flats (or fashion boots or sneakers like Converse -- whatever you prefer).

How about a winter coat? Some cute fall jackets?

Don't forget new undies and socks!

Generally, I think wovens hold up better than knits when it comes to treatment for stains, and I would not want a first grader to be holding back on art projects or playing outside due to fear of ruining her clothing.

My kid used to love wearing a sweater vest because it kept her warm without constricting her movement; now she wears camisoles all the time!

Guess I was never so organized so it never occurred to me to have a list! I think I would buy year 'round after a growth spurt and after shoes were starting to show wear.

Since I have only a son not sure about for girls but the one thing I insisted on for him was a raincoat plus pants with taped seams. Recess in the pouring rain, trips to the farm in pouring rain, sitting in puddles, etc. and he was always dry.
I'm not sure of your daughter's build but jeans never worked for the long lean beanpole of mine, they were built for hefty little boys and fell right off him. The other thing is I really, really did like double knees and bums even in grade one. The clothes reallydid have to take the wear and tear of my little ragmuffin.
I never bothered with dress shoes as we didn't need them for other parts of our life and if memory serves by the time you need them again for school they won't fit. I found that a dark coloured runner worked well.
Same goes for the dressier clothes. Sure get a better looking something but not so dressy that it can't be worn to school every day and take the wear and tear. If you go to church on Sundays and dress for it that is a different matter but soley for school no.
I always did a big shopping for school year beginning so included things like underwear, socks, pjs, slippers, housecoat too. Snowsuits tend to sell out quickly so if they are available now I'd do that and all the mitts, etc. that are needed.
Also include any sports/activities clothing you might need that may not be readily available later on such as swimsuits, basketball shorts, etc.

As far as lists go I usually started at the feet and worked up thinking of everything I would need. Sorry the lists I used are long gone now that he is an adult.

I found this list online.

That was basically my DD's wardrobe when she was little. Plus a dress, a skirt, and some nice flats. She refused dresses/skirts until her junior year in high school.

(I, of course, had to be forced kicking and screaming into pants when I was little. DD is the complete antithesis of me.)

I looooove lists, and thought it would help me to use one when shopping for my 7 year old's school wardrobe this fall (she will be starting first grade). There is no school uniform, and we live in NE (as far as weather concerns go). I am hoping using a concrete list will prevent over-buying of clothes, as it's easy to do when kid's clothes go on sale for $5 or less!

Anyone have any good lists?
