Yay, I owned that umbrella and I loved it a lot, unfortunately it wasn't very sturdy and didn't last long.
I think a pair of Target wellies would do just fine.

Okay, I'm slowly starting to work on all this cruise stuff again, and I found my umbrella:
http://www.target.com/gp/detai.....38T7YXB528
I'm still shopping for wellies or wedge water proof boots. What do you all think of these?
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7443249/c/3.html
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7343298/c/112642.html
Would I do just as well with a pair of Target Wellies? I wanted to go with black-based since I will be wearing primarily black jackets and such with jeans or cords. I do plan on wearing a dress to dinner and I realize these boots would probably look silly with it. I'm trying to pack as minimal as possible.
My husband will also need some rain boots, but he probably isn't up for tucking his jeans. Any tips for men staying dry?
Thanks.

Thank you for all the great tips and advice! I know I have time to prepare, but it really helps to get into the mindset.
Angie (or anyone since she's gone), do you think Target wellies are sufficient, or should I look elsewhere?

Excellent advice from Antje and Angie! I went on a cruise in November in the Caribbean (which is definitely NOT Alaska!) but I also encountered chilly weather at sea. Bring lots of layers and comfy open- and closed-toed shoes so you can adjust as the temperatures change. Depending on the cruise line and your accommodations you won't have an iron or ironing board, so pack things in a way that your things won't wrinkle; IMO our cruise line charged a lot for ironing, steaming, cleaning, etc.

I can't agree more with Antje about a good jacket - you'd be surprised how windy and cold it can get!

Bring a few extra outfits in case of spills (you ARE on a moving boat - things happen!) and a stain removal stick.

A slight side note: with a buffet available nearly 24 hours a day, I needed to mind my normal eating habits. If you're used to a special diet at home your body might need some adjustment to cruise food - so take that into consideration for your wardrobe if you are concerned your body may change/bloat/whatever.

Also, our boat had a good rec center, but since I wasn't willing to pay for laundry I had to pack more workout clothes than I might have needed at home. If you want to work out, go to the sauna, steam room or spa you'll need to prepare for that as well.

I hope you have a wonderful time!

Fab! I know many people that have done that and we want to do that too. Great advice from Antje. You should bring wellies, and its usually a lot colder than you think. Bring your Target puffer.

Oh how fun, Sarah! My family took a cruise to Alaska two summers ago and it was so cool! You're right to prepare for cooler temperatures; we went in August but still needed warm layers. Most cruise lines are pretty casual these days, but there are also some more upscale ones, so some of this depends on what cruise line you travel with. I'll assume the more mainstream casual ones for my suggestions.

What surprised me and left me a bit unprepared was how chilly it was on the boat itself, in the inside rooms. The air conditioning was on very high, and I constantly grabbed cardigans and other layers even on days where we were able to use the pool outside! So I'd make sure to assume layering inside even on hot days.

The weather we encountered on sea and in Alaska was very mixed. There were several days where we could hang out on deck in bathing suits, and hike in tank tops and shorts when on shore, but then there were also chillier days. So again, layers layers layers are key. I'd pick some "formula" like jeans (full length and/or clamdiggers), nice tank/sleeveless blouse, plus cardigan, as your standard attire. That will work both on the boat and on shore.

For evenings, you can then dress it up as much as you'd like. I found that evening attire ranged from jeans to dressy, so you have lots of options. I'd take a couple nice dresses or skirt/top ensembles, but again, make sure you have layers (like cardigans) that work with them, since you will rarely feel like going sleeveless on the boat. Flats or heels will work at night, whatever floats your boat (ha!).

Comfortable footwear is a must, especially for your shore excursions. We did some basic hikes, for which fashion sneakers were totally appropriate. If you do something more rugged, you need actual gear. I'd also take comfortable sandals, something that's as comfy as Birkenstocks but looks better I think there've been a lot of threads on the forum about this last summer, maybe you can dig something up.

Very important: A good wind and rain jacket. We actually only had rain once on the boat, but it was windy a lot, so if you want to spend time out on deck on the chillier days, you absolutely need a good jacket that breaks the wind. I'd look at actual "gear" for that in an outdoor sporting goods store - they still come in nice colors if you're lucky :-)

Have fun!!!

My entire family is going on an Alaskan cruise this summer. Of course my first question is, what to wear? We will be flying to Seattle first and then taking the boat from there. We will have to pack warm weather wear for Seattle, but then it will only be about 60 to 65 in AK.
I've looked for info online, but all I've seen is a) jog suits are the best option b) no denim at dinner and c) bring a rain coat.
I know I'm thinking of this quite early, but since the trip is expensive, I want to prioritize clothing/shoe spending for the trip if I even need anything. I'm especially concerned about footwear.
Thank you!
