The weather is more likely to be cold and wet than anything else. You will need layers to take on and off as needs be. I live in Corfu Greece and March is usually cold and dry or warm and very very wet with a chance of thunderstorms. I would take some warm underlayers like silk vests or thermals to wear under your knitwear. They should pack down to almost nothing. I would also take some winter weight panty hose with me to wear under jeans on very cold days. Italy and Greece are both cold and wet in the winters so jeans material can feel damp when you wear it. Other cloths are better, like wool mixes. Layers are good as it can go from very cold in the shade to hot in the sun in moments.

One thing you must bear in mind is that the marble and tiled floors in both Italy and Greece get very slippery when its wet.....I am still recovering from a dislocated shoulder and torn ligaments from slipping on such a floor in rubber soled shoes three weeks ago in my home in Corfu.

I would definitely add a warm pair of gloves (leather would be good) and a warm scarf or pashmina to your outfits. You may not have much chance to find shoes to buy in Rome if you are being taken around the historical sights as they are in different areas from the shops.

Hope this helps!

Hi Ryce

That's what I thought till I tried on the Clarks and other "comfort shoes". They fall off my feet due to my narrow heels and relatively narrow forefoot The loafers are a "sport" model with rubber sole and quite a lot of support in the high vamp. I am going to keep looking for the right walking shoe but I have walked miles in these before and may need to again. I like the idea of buying a pair of shoes in Rome but they will be "bonus". I do draw the line at white trainers....

workingmom, I really like your travel wardrobe -- the pieces sound like they will play nicely together without being limited like one of those "travel capsules" where every item is in the same color palette.

Will you have access to laundry facility or service? If not, the white jeans might not see much wear. Maybe you could substitute some light colored pants that could be washed and hung to dry?

Mia, if you are seeing the sites in Rome like the Coliseum area and the Vatican, you will primarily be in areas where everyone is a tourist, so if your fussy feet will be happier in some sturdy comfort shoes (like Clark's) you'll still be one of the most fashionable in sight! You could wear the Prada loafers to go shopping on the Via Condotti -- or better yet, buy a new pair there...

Both of your trips sound fabulous!

I am going on cruise to same area in March (one less day in Rome and one less day on boat) My packing list is coming along just fine for the life on ship as we have already been on the the sister ship in the same cruise line so know what to expect pretty much for mealtimes. I will get it in one bag but it's definitely a checked bag. We have formal nights too. I have never visited this area so I have been doing lots of thinking about it.

My "panic" is over how to look stylish while doing all the walking in Rome and at the antiquities sites along the way. I gather the weather may be changeable so it is a challenge as well as the fact that I have world's fussiest feet. Right now I am thinking of old pair of prada loafers for Rome and sneaker type shoe for places like Pompeii and Crete. I have also considered Wallabies and doing kind of a more funky look.

I have many items on my list in common with you so this looks like a good sign. I have been googling "street style in Rome" to get ideas. I see lots of short, black leather jackets. Since this is part of my current "airplane look" i am planning to take mine. I will take low brown suede booties but can't walk more than 2 miles in them at a go before I get slight discomfort.

So, for day I am taking leather jacket, blazer and long sweater and will probably pack a light waterproof trench just in case. I have several different tops and of course scarves (two) and belts to change things up. I have pretty much the same pants on my list as well. I didn't include white jeans but was considering them. Worried about showing the dirt and that they would be too summery.

Look forward to seeing pics.

Yes, some formal but not mandatory. We usually do formal nights but since this is longer, we may pass for packing sake.
