Chris I wear my down vest over sweaters or a fleece jacket in the fall and spring. I also wear it in the winter under my down coat. I run very cold. I actually wore it a lot in Florida. We go to the Northern part of Florida and at times it is like it is here in the fall.
I really like the one I have. It is shorter than most of the ones I have seen so more flattering. Well as flattering as a down vest can be. I got it at Jacob which is a Canadian store. They don't exist anymore. :(
Thank you Joy. I will keep going. The weather has been gorgeous. Hard for me to do this when I am outdoors.
Thank you Cerinda. I have found this a very valuable process. I am becoming a much better shopper.

Maybe wardrobe culls aren't exciting, but they are interesting. I may borrow your categories when I finally get to the coat closet. ADMIRABLE restraint!

Can you tell us how often you wear down vests and in what circumstances? I've got a couple and live in a similar climate to yours(but no two months in Florida) and I find them useful in fall and spring but not in the dead of winter unless I'm only going to be outside briefly. I wear them over sweaters but the combination is not super warm and I don't want to size up.

There seem to be a lot of them around, I think they have become a "basic" so hopefully you'll find one soon.

JAileen this is post purging. I got rid of a down vest that I never wore. I agree that my outerwear capsule is small but we are on the road a lot. Unfrumped I have worked on restraint. It does not come easy.

I love outerwear and don't think it's boring. I'm surprised you only have one down vest. I got rid of two and still had four! I was going to say you have a shockingly small coat wardrobe, considering you live in Canada, but I see you spend two months in Florida, so that makes sense.

RobinF I have been working on this for a few years. I did a lot of purging when I retired 5 years ago. I have to really push myself to do it. But it is worth doing the wardrobe audit to see the real needs.
Banoffi I am doing a lot of pushing myself to do this. I need a reward at the end. A carrot.
Suz I am glad you don't find it boring. I enjoy reading other fabbers audits. I do keep clothes a long time. I am actually surprised by that. I am keeping my number of coats small because we are gone from home 3 months of the winter (plus travel time). One month in Montreal and two months in Florida. I try to keep my packing down to a manageable amount.

This is not boring. What I learned is that you keep your coats for a very long time, and you have a small-ish capsule of them considering your climate.

I know snow boots are the key item this year but I hope you will consider upgrades to some old favourites and a few new fun additions when the funds are there for it.

Joy a part of me would love a new pea coat but our climate is mostly a freezing cold winter. I can still squeeze a few more years out of the pea coat. The outside looks fine. I think.
La Ped I have also debated replacing lining on coats. Or adding a warmer lining. Sometimes it is worth it if the coat is a good one.
Thank you Angie. I have been looking at vests from J. Crew. I like that nice fuzzy one. :) The coat is beautiful and very tempting. But not this year. Snow boots this year.

Sounds like you have a good mix of function and fashion options here!

My oldest coat, a wool duffle from J Crew, is about 12 years old too (I've had it my entire adult life) and the lining is pretty much destroyed, totally shredded. It's been my "good" coat for so long I'm having a hard time figuring out how to replace it! I may see if I can find a tailor who will put a new lining in it.

It sounds like you should also look for a new brown pea coat to replace the one that is so worn. Could any of your other brown jackets (leather and suede) stand in for it, or are they the wrong weight?

Dress Coats:
3/ Black fake sheepskin mid calf coat. Bought November 2004 to wear to my mother's funeral. It is a very nice coat but provides absolutely no warmth. Zero. A decorative item.
4/ Dark Brown Fake Fur knee length Trapeze style coat. Bought November 2002. I love this coat. I don't know if it looks dated but the fake fur is beautiful. Reasonably warm for a dressy coat.
