I'm just being silly. I have the exact same pants in black and have no problem wearing them. I'm wearing my white pants today with a dark blue tunic layered over a yellow lace trim cami. Not spectacularly exciting, but at least it's something different.

I also have a black trench and 2 pairs of black boots. I seem to fit the stereotype too, but I’m not a New Yorker! It’s an urban thing. That’s all.

Stick to substantial fabrics when you buy light coloured pants. It's a great look with dark tops and shoes.

Yeah, I'm in NY Nicole. That reminds me--one of my friends came here from North Carolina, and one of her friends said she needs to get a black trench and some slick black boots to step up her "New York" look. It sounds like a stereotype to me, but I guess maybe it's somewhat true (I have both a black trench and two pairs of black boots, so I am partially responsible for this stereotype). I have a pair of white pants but I almost never wear them. Somehow they don't feel as substantial to me. I feel like I'm wearing leggings. Maybe it's time to give them another try, though.

Super suggestions ladies!

I think that a bright Spring coat is an ideal remedy for this boredom. Many of them are already on sale. I like to pull out my bright indoor scarves, cheerful fashions sneakers and brighter handbags. I do not have a dark wardrobe and cream is my black most of the time. Cream jeans are another great solution. I wore mine today with red shoes, a black & cream preppy blazer and a yellow turtle neck.

Mayapple, Old Navy has some long sleeve layering tees. I know the quality isn't the greatest, but maybe one or two cheap additions will help you thru this inbetween season. I'm in New England, so I hear you about the warm weather being a little further away for us.

I keep my clothes on two separate racks in my closet--one for winter/fall and one for Summer/Spring. I was noticing the lack of color on the winter rack--and longing for the beautiful colors on my summer rack. That's why I started to use the spring pieces as layering pieces--just for the color.

Also, I know that a bag/purse and a new necklace will cheer me up!

You're both definitely right about the seasonal aspect of it. I'm sick of wearing boots and jeans every day. I'd give anything to finally break out a skirt and some flats.

The problem I'm having is that everyone is already well into their spring collection. I was definitely thinking of doing what Nicole mentioned--layering long sleeves under shorter sleeves--but I can't find any long sleeve tops anymore! I also really wanted a sweater dress and some long sleeve tunics, but they seem to be gone too. Maybe I have to just wait it out. Unfortunately it stays chilly here until May, so I have a long way to go.

Sleeveless tops sound great too, but again, I'll need something to wear under them, and right now all I have are sweaters. The scarf thing might work, and Urban Outfitters definitely has some cute and quirky lightweight scarves that I was thinking of getting. Maybe I'll try that.

I support the recommendation to try some interesting layering combos. I started layering v-neck sleeveless tops over shirts (e.g. a pink/red striped v-neck sleeveless top over a crisp white shirt, or a black v-neck top over a blue/black patterned shirt), and those combinations rock. They took some getting used to, but have become one of my favorite looks especially at work.

Also, try new styles that you haven't considered before. E.g., I always thought "I don't look good in tunics/longer tops" and didn't even try them on. Angie successfully challenged that and I started trying some and finding that some actually worked really well. Now I have a few that I really like.

Finally, accessories can be a great (cheap) way to add zing. I love earrings and scarves, and often go out to buy myself a new scarf (the kind you wear indoors, not the heavier ones to wear with a coat) when I need new color in my wardrobe and don't want to spend the money for new tops.

But I also agree with Nicole that your "wardrobe boredom" could at least in part be timing related. I am getting very bored with my winter combos and just can't wait for spring. I just started looking for spring flats, and will start looking for other spring wardrobe soon. Once I have a few spring items, I will start to wear them in combination with winter things (e.g., a new spring skirt with winter boots) to bridge the seasons and to start having more fun getting dressed again!

Good luck!!

Wow Mayapple....I have been feeling the same exact way. I was chalking it up to the fact that it's almost the end of winter, and I'm sick of wearing my winter clothes (but it's still cold outside!

I've been wearing my most colorful cami's and tanks under my cardigans and sweaters. I've even tried styling my hair a little differently--wearing it pulled back or partially up. I wish I could break out my spring shoes, but it's still wet and snowy, so that'll have to wait.

One other thing I've done, is I have a few short sleeve tops that are kind of lek a sweater knit. I've paired them with a long sleeve colorful Tee underneath. It sort of gives the short sleeve top the look of a vest. The first few times I did that, i wasn't sure about how it looked, but then I noticed a few of my friends and coworkers followed suit--so it must have given them some inspiration.

Hope this helps--and hang in there, Spring really is right around the corner!

lately i feel like i have way too many "classics" and not enough fun pieces in my wardrobe. to be blunt, i'm too young for this. i have all my life to stick to classics. now is the time to experiment and have fun.

i'm wondering if rather than just buying new clothes, i can find new ways of layering and mixing things up. i am willing to buy accessories but i have a hard time finding jewelry i like (or that fits). i've been thinking of trying belts, but the waist-cinching type just serves to showcase my lack of a waist, and i'm afraid the hipslung type will do something even worse to my bottom half. i think a lot of current trends are very hard to wear and it's forcing me to be safe. what can i do?
