Thanks all. I had forgotten how rich the wisdom is here, and how generous you all are sharing it.

Diana, thanks for the link to the shearling insoles - that is helpful!
LaPed: yes, Yaktrax are a must for me! But I kind of hate how they feel and sound, so I only wear them when the ice is really bad.
Lisa: I hear you on the winter footwear categories. I've realized (yet again?) that once it's cold, I wear only two things outside: snow boots or this other thing - like the fleecey Cons. I really have to start wearing my leather booties in August next year so that I get a few months out of them! And I have to remember NOT TO BUY ANY MORE!
Chris: THANK YOU for posting those Eccos! And Lisap, thank you for echoing (pun intended) the recommendation! I may well try them - even though they don't seem to have a real temperature rating. I just have to choose the color.

I saw the Ecco booties Chris showed above today - and had they not been pretty identical to a pair of Uggs I already own , they might be mine . After a ton of online browsing and then some b&m today , I ended up with a very unsexy pair of waterproof Columbia sneaker / hiker things . I bought mine for outdoor walking only though - not sure I’d be caught wearing them anywhere else I still have my eye on those Cougars we were discussing - but I’m getting booted out for the season - pun kind of intended .

You've got some great recommendations! Let me add a few more....

1. Ecco Booties. Some might call these high top sneakers. They are waterproof, faux fur lining that is quite warm, have all the support and comfort you'd expect from Ecco, and have a very grippy sole. I have them in a solid black which I prefer to white soles with a black upper. Not exactly inexpensive but worth every $$ to me. Nordstrom is sold out but Zappos has them.

2. These Merrill "hiking boots". They may be too much like the snow boots you already have but I'll mention them anyway. Extremely warm, very supportive, waterproof, and great quality. Granted they do have a "gear" look, which might or might not be your thing. I wear them for outdoor walks daily from about now until March. If I need to walk through a few inches of snow, no problem. They are reasonably grippy but if it's icy I'd add my yaktraks. They are a little stiff, so the zipper AND the laces have to be undone to take them off, but they have loosened up a bit with weather.

I wear both of them with mid-weight smartwool socks and my feet are very happy in cold weather, although for me I'm usually moving when I wear them. Would love to try either pair around a fire pit!

Hello viva!
Wouldn’t you know, I was just outside by the fire pit myself.
I like ugg type boots, but fleece-lined converse look very cool. Definitely go off- brand for this type of thing.
Take care! Xxoo

My NH climate is much the same as yours, and I have very high warmth requirements, being desert-bred. Also, I don't want to get broken,

Nothing can do it all. In the real winter I distinguish between these categories:

can walk down a very steep and icy driveway, with a dog who pulls, and not fall and not get cold ≠ mostly studded icebugs but sometimes e.g. la canadienne boots (don't own yaktrax yet)

can walk around flatter yet icy surfaces for a while and not get cold ≠ warm boots with some tread (e.g. aquatalia)

can walk from car to restaurant/ across driveway = fancy boots or booties, with heel even

can wear in house ≠ slippers

Viva, I know exactly what you mean about living on an icy hill. Do you have something like Yaktrax or Stabilicers? They don't look pretty, but they really do work!

Not a boot suggestion per se, Viv, but you might want to get some shearling insoles for your regular boots. I find that a lot of shearling and fleece lined boots don't have lining on the sole, which IMO is where your feet get the coldest, since it's closest to the cold ground, and these solve that problem.

I have these LL bean ones, they do require some extra room in your boots because they're pretty bulky at first, but they do compress down with time. Ugg also makes some, I believe.

Angie, I have the black fleece-lined Cons (which I love) but they are getting quite worn. I need something with a real tread - I live on a hill and it gets quite icy. So looking for something a bit more substantial than than the Cons, and rated for low temps.

I don’t think this will help as it is a UK business, but the boots I have are shearling lined from Russell and Bromley. I have a cream pair that is two years old and a black pair from last year. Both amazing and I don’t remember having cold feet ever, when I’ve been wearing them.

My kid got the shearling insoles for their Blundstones and they say this works really well.

I've been super surprised at how warm my Sorel sneaker booties (waterproof) proved to be. I got them, thinking they'd be good for mild Vancouver/ Victoria winters (which they are) but I also wore them in frigid Ontario in February last year, when there was an extreme cold snap. Walked for hours in them in the ice and snow. Never got cold. Wore Smartwool hiking socks. Granted, they are pretty casual....

Viva!! So nice to 'see' you! You've been missed :)

I had the EXACT same problem last year. Solved it with these two:
Ugg Kesey boots:
https://www.brownsshoes.com/en.....24-O_color
Look nothing like Uggs. More like a rugged, warm, lightweight, low profile boot. Great with pants or jeans.

And my favourites - Ugg Luxury Berge shearling boots. These look and feel like luxe slippers, but have a little more support for the foot. I wear them all year long.

Finally, the Sorel sneaker boots that Suz recommended are workhorses for me too when there's not a lot of snow outside.

I have a pair of Santana boots. I needed boots that were more walkable than Sorels, but warmer than Timberlands, for birding in the snow.

haha Lisa! So funny. I have Blundstones but they are not insulated and therefore are not warm. My fleece-lined Cons are really worn down - that's what I need to replace (but with better warmth and traction). Tims are an option.

Agree that Uggs are nice and warm. I also have some Sketcher booties with shearling lining that are very warm. Maybe it is the shearling?

Thanks, Nemosmom! I love that the Cougar shoes have a warmth rating and the Treviso sneakers look amazing. I think I will try them.

Sorel makes great, warm winter footwear that is fleece lined and warm. There are a few sneakers that have furry-type lining (Converse and Vans have plush lined hi-tops). Cougar is another brand to check - they make several styles that are insulated up to -24F (https://www.cougarshoes.com/always-waterproof/) I have a pair of their insulated boots that are really warm. I size up to accommodate socks and to add airspace for heat :D

This is just my opinion and YMMV, but I’d stay away from a leather bottom if your looking for true outdoor wear. Ive found If the ground is wet or even damp it will seep into the sole & my feet will feel cold no matter how many layers of tights & socks I have on. But maybe that’s just me.

Thanks for these suggestions!

April, I'm hoping Lisa's suggestion will be Ugg-like without being Uggs. LOL!

Lisa, are those Vince booties TTS? I'm wondering if I should go up 1/2 size for socks? Or do you wear them barefoot?

This probably won't make you happy (it doesn't make me happy) but a few years ago I learned that the warmest thing is to wear Uggs without socks. The classic wool-fleece-lined ones are meant to be worn sockless and somehow this helps the wool fleece lining do its job.

I intensely dislike the look, but it is warm.

I got these a couple of weeks ago...warm and waterproof, but IMO they don’t give a snow boot vibe...they come in other colors, I’d also recommend these waterproof lined sneakers.
