Sterling, I decided I'd stalk for a sale and then try the switcheroo Chadya, I agree but then he's the one working and supporting us this last year, so it's only polite to consider everyone's point of view on how we spend 'our' money. That's part of why I started a clothing budget and number of items allotment, to keep us both happy. (not that he's got me on an allowance or anything, we're practically married after 13 years)

If shoes are uncomfortable at the beginning they will never be, trust me after many years I finally learned this lesson. If you can sell that at consigment/eBay that is the better solution.
you can fudge it with a Tshirt but not a shoe,
at the risk of inciting a riot, I don't think it is yr. boyfriends business what you do with your shoes.

I do this. Sometimes I buy somethng that's perfect...then I find the truly perfect version a short time later. If it's not a lot of $$$, I donate it. I get what I truly love and a charity gets a brand new item to resell. Everyone wins!!

I did this twice. When I was looking for the tartan pants, I black bought a pair of red and black plaid pants before I found the pattern I really wanted. The red and black ones sat in my closet for a year. I recently donated them to one of the disabled kids I work with. I also was looking for a pair of olive jeans for quite a while. I ordered a pair of kuts that were much more yellow/green than I wanted. After some time, I found the perfect greyish shade at Old Navy. I recently consigned the kuts.

I need to work on PPP a bit more.

I sometimes am not upgrading but sort of "across-grading" - I find something I love, but a detail is off. The new item may not be "better" (as in more $, nicer brand) but is better for ME. So it's a refining rather than a repeat. But I am one who only learns from making lots of mistakes first!

Thanks for weighing in, everyone. I forgot to mention to some of the newer folks that don't know - my climate changes dramatically every year or so. I'm heading back to snowy Tahoe soon. So, that's always an interesting kink in the system. I guess I meant they weren't seeing too many wears right now living in FL warm temps. Interestingly, that same constraint goes the other way in Tahoe and I don't wear sockless shoes for at least 6 months either. lol. Flats have a short season no matter where I live I guess Ha!
There's no doubt they are some of my least comfortable shoes, even more than many of my heels, so they are practically sitting shoes even though they are flats.
For me, the style seems to have just a little more edge, or at least interest and that's the big pull.
I'm going to wait for a sale and look into upgrading then. And I bet my BF probably won't notice the difference honestly. Shiny shoes are shiny shoes ;)

Put the first pair down to experience. We've all bought shoes that we have a bad relationship with and they need to go. If they are still uncomfortable after several wears, I doubt that will change. You did write that you don't really wear closed shoes because of your climate. So would you wear the other pair with these conditions? If so, buy your favoured shoe and be sure to enjoy and wear them. If not, maybe buy a silver/dark grey sandal or sling back of some description that you would use and enjoy more in the heat.

Oh, I've definitely done this, and not just for comfort. Once I realize I'm not happy with an item and I've found a superior one, the original is forever tainted in my mind. I wish I could be more content with what I already have in cases like that, but you can't unsee something, you know?

Now, when it's a case of comfort, it's even more justifiable. How's that for enabling?

I think I would shop my closet before I bought new shoes. I just arrived at YLF. By shopping my closet, I discovered that nice shoes and belts were my weakest links. (I hate buying shoes). Are shoes really the issue, or is something else needed to complete your wardrobe?

Comfort aside (just for fun) I think the Maddens are a clear style upgrade for you. Much more sophisticated. I've found myself doing this sometimes lately. I think it has to do with honing in on a style. We buy one thing that seems good--we learn--we find another in roughly the same category that's a lot better. If it's not necessary to scrimp the pennies, then why not?

If it were me, I would really ask myself what *all* the reasons are why the original pair isn't being worn. Is it mainly the climate, that closed toes doesn't work well? If that's the case, then the new pair might not be worn either. Is it mostly about comfort? If that's the case, then the new pair might indeed be worth doing a switcheroo (that's the technical term).

The last element, which you didn't mention, might be how the shoes pair with outfits. Does the original pair not go with your current wardrobe very well, and is that also contributing to lack of wears? How about the new pair—how will it mesh with your wardrobe?

Does one pair or the other match your style persona appreciably more?

In short, if you can be reasonably sure that the new pair will improve the reasons why the current pair is not being worn, then it would be worth taking the splurge.

Either way, I'm not talking breaking the bank. The first pair were $39 (?) bought with gift $$. The second pair are $59 and sure to be on sale at some point. The nude are already $32 on Amazon.
I just have never done this before. But I also have found myself selling NWT items off this year as well, so maybe it's time to embrace the idea of not settling when I know better is well within my means.

it's not the same shoe. the first shoe is clearly clearly defective so as not to meet its obligation, which is to be comfortable when worn. you are not replacing it so much as firing its sorry butt and hiring a more competent shoe.

I guess it is OK as long as they don't end up having the same 'issues' as the original pair?
