Oh good. The Percy Jackson books were also a big hit for our house, and Wings of Fire. My DSis turning 12 in 2 weeks and if he will read it I will buy it, just to keep him going!

As a reader, I share your joy!! Wonderful to see. DD9 is my main bookworm - currently getting through Harry Potter (like Una, I'll only let her see the movies when she has read the books) and the Narnia books (which I have read to her already - she is doing that while we wait for the library to have the next HP she is up to).

DD12 doesn't read as much as I'd like to either, and although a competent reader and good at school, isn't that fast. I read so much as a child, though admittedly I didn't have much else going on (no TV for much of the time, less homework, no phone/ computer/ipod, less extra curricular stuff, and not very social!)

KKARDS he doesn't have dyslexia it was just a case of not getting it with the way schools teach reading these days. There are too many kids having this issue based on the strong sight words technique currently in place. Once we did the phonetics he has been off and running. There was just damage from schooling that most homeschoolers say take as many years as the child was in school, so this means he is a year early, lol! ALASKAGIRL, with my prompting he read the Maze Runner series last year. By the way, he is 15. Like his Mom, he's not liking movie versions and finds the books better. A good sign in my mind. It truly is a present. ANGIE!

Tracey, I'm wondering if you ever had your son tested for dyslexia. I ask because I'm dyslexia and honestly until i got special tutoring in the 5th grade, I also lacked phonetic awareness....I managed in school, but not well, being told often that I wasn't trying hard enough. I was tutored from 5th-8th grade, with the tutors using a special reading curriculum that really got to the difference in sounds (and lots of made up words, so that you wouldn't learn by straight memorization).

Congratulations!! What a wonderful moment. My son was also uninterested in reading on his own until he discovered science fiction and fantasy (Enders Game and Harry Potter were our breakthrough books). Your son might also like The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm.

Congrats! That's a fun book. How old is your son? It's about to be a movie too... He should also try the Maze Runner books if he likes the 5th Wave. We feel the same about reading, and I kind of hate that reading is assigned as homework because it puts it into a "task/chore" category for kids, rather than a lifelong interest. Fortunately my DS has learned the joy of getting sucked into a book world (right now Harry Potter) and it does help that I will let him watch the movies once he's read the books.

Yesterday my DS915) and DH went to get some groceries at BJ's after their haircuts. While there my son went to the book department and picked out " The 5th Wave" and DH reported read some in the car on the ride home....

This is HUGE! I began homeschooling my son 5 years ago when it became apparent that he lacked phonetic awareness and the school was not equipped to change that, just pushing him along, making crazy statments that due to his intelligence he would be fine. We worked hard that first year on a remedial program called "Back on the Right Track" and it was a briliant experience that although tough, fixed the issue completely. He now reads to grade level and beyond. The issue is he only reads what I assign him. This was the first time he picked out a book on his own to read just for the fun of it... We are a family of readers, and both DH and I can't look at each other without tearing up. I must say that never planning on being a homeschooling mom, that this is my finest choice as a mother of 4 with 29years of experience!

Thanks for letting me share my joy, it was too big to contain, lol
