Natalie, I think the hats are so cute and you may get wear out of the leggings if they are not too tight. Maybe gently suggest to your mum that next time it could be fun to go shopping together when she wants to buy you clothing. That way it can be a shared experience, time spent together, and you get to chose and try on first.

Aw. It's sweet that she tried! My mom gave up giving me clothes for gifts years ago (since I'm so "picky"...her word). I received a lovely Nordstrom gift card this year.

FWIW, I could totally see these working for you, if you style them YOUR way. The striped turtleneck could get tucked into a pencil skirt and layered under a blazer. The velvet leggings could be treated as tights to keep you warm under skirts and boots. The black dress might be good as a long layering tee/tunic. And of course the hats are really cute and would keep you warm.

But you have to like them enough to do this work experimenting with your clothes. If you don't like them at all, then you just don't like them. Could you ask your mom for the receipt, saying you need a new size? Then you could exchange for larger sizes or for something more your speed - cardis? layering camis?

It is an awkward situation, no question, but it seems like she did try. :T

Haha Sona, no DH has not seen me in these yet! Maybe I should wear the glitter top and velvet leggings with the feathered beret and my animal print heels and faux fur collar jacket and see if he approves? LOL!

What? You don't think I look ridiculous? Even with the feathered hat? OK, maybe I should give these items a second chance and try to work them in somehow. Maybe it might feel a little less strange spreading it out to one item per outfit rather than all together because right now it doesn't feel very me at all. I will try again though!

My mom is very kind-hearted and generous. She's always been more interested in makeup and dressing up than me and has a more glam/blingy style (sometimes a little MDAL too). Ever since we were growing up she's always been buying me clothes or trying to get me to wear makeup. I've only been doing this fashion thing for a few months and she really does not have any idea I'm doing this or what my new style is so I don't fault her at all for not picking things that are my style. It just amuses me that she is shopping at a "younger" store than I do. She did get some navy polka dot tights that I wore last week and some cream fishnet-style tights too, so some of it is stuff I can really use.

I definitely was very thankful to her...no need to hurt her feelings if it's not perfect. I hate it when you give something and the giftee makes a face or says they want to return it right away, so I try not to do that ever. I don't have a problem with regifting or returning per se, just not in front of your face! ;)

Unfortunately F21 has a horrible return policy--you have to have the receipt and all tags AND return within 21 days, and then you only get store credit, no refunds. And accessories/jewelry are all final sale. No returns without receipt or after 21 days. I don't want to ask my mom for the receipt so I will either have to make them work or donate them. This is why I try not to shop there and go to Nordstrom or Anthro instead.

Alicat, that is a great quote. And I'll try to wear the beret next time I'm out with my mom. I'm so sorry about your mom...I miss my dad all the time too.

I must be too rusty, I actually think that everything here is cute!
I am loving the feather hat, the leggings can add interest to the basic legging/tunic combo, and I am not hating the dress or the top either.

Well, I happen to like the hats:) And the black dress, maybe you can wear it as a top, with a a-line skirt and or with colored leggings, boots and a chunky cardigan?:)
I'm just saying.
My mom also gets me clothes, but this year she paid for my custom shoes. I visit her 1-2 a month, and she likes to buy me something when I visit. Now less, as the economy is tight. But she bought me tights, bras, scarves, tops, pajamas, hats. Sometimes she even thifts for me. Some are hits, some are misses ( a huge fur coat- to chunky for me) I was always moved by the effort, and the way moms keep us in their thoughts, even when we grow up, and don't communicate as often, and we evolve in sophisticated women.
So, say thanks and do what you want with the items!

Yes, definitely, keep the hats and I like Alicat's suggestion and Amy's, too. The hats bring out your playful nature and see if you can return the other items for a store credit. I just returned two scarves this past week due to wrong color and scratchiness. You've got to be happy with what you wear.

Oh well, there's not much you can do but smile and wear the things you can (like the hats -- I agree that they're cute!)

The other clothes don't fit -- you're right. This happens to me a lot because I have relatives in England who send me clothes for Christmas, and often they don't fit, but it's not worth the postage to send them all the way back. I also don't like to hurt their feelings.

For years my own mother has returned most of the birthday and Christmas gifts I've bought for her, clothing or otherwise. They're always a reason. Sometimes it's a valid reason (like fit issues), but other times I swear she's just being difficult. I try really hard to find items I think she'll like, so sometimes I feel a bit hurt. There's a fine line with returning gifts -- if it's just the odd thing, I think it's fine, but if you reject too many gifts, you can hurt the giver's feelings.

Sometimes I think it's better to just smile and lie!

Natalie, I really like the hats on you. I LOVE the feathered hat, actually. It has kind of a retro appeal that I think would actually dovetail with your "ladylike bombshell" style quite nicely. Have you tried putting the other things together in outfits with items you already have? Sometimes I am very pleasantly surprised at how a seemingly "black sheep" item can really work with what's in my closet. Anyway, you should sincerely thank your mother. I know you don't want to encourage her to get your more gifts from F21 and it's a tricky situation, but I've learned it's better to just accept whatever people give you graciously and assume they did it with a generous heart. It makes me a happier person, anyway.

Alicat, I love that quote! Thank you for posting it. : )

I think some of these items look like they could, theoretically, look good on you if they were a different size, better fabrication, less sparkly.... Anyway, I guess the idea of them was pretty good but the actual items just do not suit you (I mean the cowl neck and dress in particular - I think both the size and the quality are not what you need). I would keep some items and wear them so that your mom can see them, and see if you can get an exchange out of the other ones as has been suggested.

On the other hand, I used to be very annoyed when DH would get me clothes as gifts because I felt like he was taking money out of our limited budget to buy something I did not need or want. After a while, I learned to react to these gifts more as an expression of affection, then an actual clothing item. And then I discovered that he has a very good eye and sense of style but that's a different story.

Anyway, I guess it's just really nice that you mom spent time shopping for you in one of her favorite stories and trying to find things that you would like, even if the result is less than stellar. At least if you end up donating some of the clothes, not too much money has been wasted but she enjoyed the shopping experience. Actually, if you cannot exchange the items -can you keep them around in a "transitional" part of the closet and wear as layers (e.g., the cowl neck under something else) when you happen to go out with your mom? Although as mnsara has said, that might be dangerous - you may get more gifts "from your favorite store".

Oh, she really doesn't *get* your personal style! That's tricky. . .

Yes, leggings with boots and the hats could be useful.

I'd at least try taking the rest to a F21 to see if you can get store credit (or whatever Holiday Gift policy they have), but I'd go quick because it's 1/7 already. (Or maybe call first?)

Sweet idea to wear the hat out with your mom, but would that be 'encouraging' her to buy more clothes for future gifts. . . ??

I tend to be very pragmatic about gifts when they aren't useful. It happens, but I really try to figure out how it won't happen again.

I love the sentiment. I agree that the velour leggings under a tunic or denim longer shirt might be ok, especially as a relaxed outfit to entertain in during the winter.

I would also keep a couple of things as a token. Some people like to share what THEY like with other people as gifts. Other people really pay attention to the person and get them something that the recipient loves , even if the giver hates it.

Do you think that your mom can learn ? Take her window shopping and show her what you love.

the leggings and the mushroom beret might be worth saving, but if they're not feeling like "you" then I wouldn't keep them. They'd just be displacing fab stuff you already have.
I'd atleast try to exchange them and get a scarf or bag. You should be able to exchange Christmas gifts w/o a reciept... but don't quote me on that. I don't know how picky F21 is on that.

I love Alicat's idea of wearing the feathered beret out to coffee with your mom!

I also like the black dress, can you size up?

ETA: But if you don't like the dress at any size, then don't keep!.....can't always tell the quality, feel, etc. on this kind of post.

If the tags are still on, can't you exchange for a different size? Or exchange for jewelery, scarves, etc.....I always look at the accessories @ F21.

Awww, I love the hats on you! I wish I still had a mom. . .I would keep the feathered beret and wear it out to coffee with her.

Oh dear. That's awkward, isn't it. Will she ask how come you're not wearing them? I hope not...

The velvet leggings might come in handy.

I guess the good news is that she figured out you are interested in fashion. Or maybe she bought you fashion gifts all along? If so, it has taken some determination for you to find your own style, Natalie, and you can be proud of that. And say a kind thank you to your mom for her efforts.

It's taken me many years of trying to be pleasant o convince my mom to stop buying clothed for me. Every now and again she'll still try to buy something for me just because it's on sale. I am not so polite about it anymore. Anyway I'd keep the velvet leggings to wear with boots. Kiss the rest goodbye.

You'll especially not be wearing them if they're sitting in YLF closets around the country. You may want to hang on to a token item or two...

Oh Natalie! Doesn't she realize how fab you've become? Oh well, it's the thought that counts. Now how to gingerly explain why you're note wearing them....*awkward*!
