I was just thinking that, Brooklyn. I was also thinking of making an appointment at the beauty school and going in for a few appointments just to have them show me the different tools and what kinds of hairstyles they are good for.

Maybe you should talk to your hair stylist and see what they recommend. They know your hair.

Marley, I have been tempted to get a flat iron, but I have heard that they cause a lot of hair damage, so I am afraid. But Babyliss did have a neat combination flat iron-wand tool: it was shaped like a wand, but it was split down the middle and has a lever for splitting the two halves apart so you can use it as a flat iron.

I am more confused than ever as to what to get! I want to experiment with a lot of things but don't want to buy ten different tools. Maybe I need to get a product with interchangeable barrels.

GHD is my favorite brand of hair "tools."
One suggestion, if you want to sometimes wear your hair "semistraighter" with a bit of straightness along with the wave, I strongly recommend a flat iron. You can not only straighten your hair with them, but you can also curl your hair with them (in a much softer, straighter curl than what you would get with a curling iron or curling brush.) I love my flat iron!

Thanks for the ideas. Brooklyn, I hadn't heard of GHD. I see that they have that brand at Sephora. It looks like very high quality! They do have curling irons and wands too. The Sephora site had some glowing reviews for the wand I looked at.

Dianthus, the Babyliss looks good. I like all the heat settings it has. Thank you.

Rachylou, I think that you are describing a wand: it looks like a clampless curling iron with a tapered barrel. I've never used one but think it would be fun to try!

Gaylene, I used a curling brush years ago (high school!) and had forgotten about them. Thanks for bringing them back to mind...they would be worth checking out again. Maybe I could use the Conair's larger brush as a semistraightener, to add volume and a little bit of straightness but still keep some wave.

I prefer a styling brush to a curling iron for my fine, wavy hair. The smaller brush adds a soft wave, while the larger brush is an easy way to add volume. The hot air, inexpensive Conair works well for me because my hair takes a curl easily, and I've never had any problems with breakage damage on my baby-fine hair using it. The Conair was recommended to me by my stylist over a decade ago when I asked her for her recommendation for a curling iron for fine hair. My sister, who also has fine hair, tossed away her $$$ curling iron after she went home with the extra Conair I had bought for the guest bath!

I'm not sure the difference between the terms wand and iron... but I do like an iron without the clip and a tapered barrel.

I have fine hair that gets wavy when its long and I have a babylis pro round iron and love it. I used it daily for years before I cut my hair short.

Hi Gigi. I would have a look at what ghd have to offer. I have bought one straightening iron and one curling wand in the past- both not ghd - and was not happy with either. Threw them out. Sorry I don't remember the brands. I have since bought a ghd and am very happy with it. It is a straightener. I think they do curling wands also so I would look at their range.

I am considering getting a wand and maybe a curling iron. Do any of you have recommendations? I have baby-fine, wavy hair.

I have an old curling iron—probably 20 years old—and it takes forever to heat up. The new ones are obviously quicker to heat up, and I would like a ceramic one because I think they have more even heat distribution.

I am also considering getting a wand because I have been told that they create bigger, softer curls, which is what I would like.

Any recommendations for either of these tools would be great. Or if anyone has info on experiences with curling irons vs. wands (I've never used a wand), that would be welcome too!

My only requirement is that the wand/curling iron have a thermostat so I can control the heat, because I don't want the implement to get too hot and damage my fine hair.

Thanks, everyone!
