Shevia, good to hear from another walker. I like the "jangly bits" expression.
CS, I love swimming even more than walking but it's too cold for me right now, even though I have the full gear. Oh, I should explain, I'm a sea swimmer.

That is how I feel about my swimming. I do it for exercise, but also to clear my head, deal with stress and for thinking time. When I have something that I really need to think about, I will swim extra.

Hail fellow walkers!
Ami, you're right, there's no substitute for getting outside but the important thing is you are exercising, and I understand perfectly that you need that, even if you are an ultra busy MOTG and home schooler.
I am busy all day long (I doubt as busy as you though) and much of it is heavy duty labour but the walk addresses different physical and emotional needs.
Linda there is nothing like a new pup in the family. What a lovely bonus for your summer. My darling Shep is 4 now but there's still a bit of pup in him. He will always be my baby -and he knows it.
Elly, I love what you say about the distraction of nature. And the restorative powers of a shower, or a bath or a swim, often bring me clarity too.
Julie, you're lucky to have a beautiful park nearby and it must smell delicious to walk in a pine forest.
Gaylene it's such a treat to hear of your hikes in the snow. It sounds so adventurous to me. Like Lyn I love your idea of mixing train and shank's pony, they are my two favourite ways to immerse myself in another landscape. I haven't walked the other cities you mention but this time last year I was happily hoofing it around Paris. Now there is a city made for walkers.

I've been a walker all my life and I totally agree with your "Resolution Corner".

My husband teases me that, now that we don't have a dog, he still has to walk his wife regularly to keep her in a good mood. In the winter, if we aren't downhill skiing, we often go on day hikes with snowshoes in the foothills nearby.

I'm also fortunate to have a sister who loves to walk as much as I do. Since her husband has a second house in West Sussex near the coast, we often use that as a base for day-long walking trips in the South Downs and along the Channel. One of our favorite things to do is to take the train to a destination about 10-15 miles away and then make our way home on foot. We've also had fun exploring cities like London, Paris, Prague, and Budapest on foot, as well as the surrounding countryside.

Walking is great exercise, but even better for the soul.

Yes, we love walking too, and try to do it every day. We have a lovely park nearby with huge pine trees. It's fun to watch the pinecones mature as the year goes on, and then to see them fall. This whole area used to be walnut groves, and there are some old walnut trees at the park too, the crows love them. Nice thread, Lantana!

I love to go on walks. I too enjoy walking alone and it often seems to work out situations in my mind while I'm distracted with nature. I love dogs, but unfortunately my pooch has gotten to the age where we take short walks around the property, but he won't keep up with me. I also enjoy walking with the SO and talking over things.

My other favorite place to work things out is in the shower!

Thank you for sharing this Lantana, it is very inspiring. I used to walk a lot but in recent times I have allowed the busyness of life to get in the way of having this lovely quiet time. But for the past two weeks Master 10 and I have been going for short walks at the end of the day in preparation for a new family member ( that Master 10 will be responsible for) and it has been just lovely. We have had some wonderful talks and other times just walked quietly together lost in our own thoughts.

Lyn, wow, three times daily. That is beautiful and so special for you to share that time outdoors with your GSHP.
I really like what you say about deeper beauty and your body's more relaxed, forgiving and accepting nature.
There's a difference between acceptance and giving up; I aspire to the former and battle the latter.

I am with you Lantana!
Love walking and out I go rain, hail or shine, with or without dog 3 times daily.
You are lucky to have the beach, but at least once a day I walk through a park and enjoy the trees and grass.
My favourite tree is a beautiful gum with smooth white bark. I adore the way it 'wrinkles' at the branch junctions. When I see this I am thankful that I have reached an age where I can appreciate my own body for its more relaxed, forgiving and accepting nature. I can see the deeper beauty within myself and others too!

A few posts referring to walking got me thinking how important it is in my life, a treat for heart and soul.
I walk twice a day, usually along our beach but occasionally through the neighbour's paddocks. I walk with two pooches, Shep the Border Collie and Fifi, the Westillion. Woe betide me if I should attempt to leave them behind.
When I was still in the world of paid work I walked every afternoon. Invariably I'd be saddled with work issues, large and small, negative and positive. I would walk and walk, chewing and fashing over things until I reached a point where it all fell into perspective. I'd reached what I came to think of as "resolution corner".
It wasn't as though all the problems had disappeared or even that solutions had miraculously presented themselves. It was just that they settled into perspective and I knew I'd be able to deal with them. Endorphins at work? No doubt but whatever the mechanism, I'd turn for home in a happier frame of mind.
Sharing this for no particular reason apart from the love of walking.
