You're so welcome Bonnie. I just bought a pair of their Bora Boras in brandy (lace-up ballet flats). I think they might be my spring and summer go-to flats.

Xtabay: Love this site - so many wonderful shoes. Thanks for recommending it.
BrieN: I've ordered the black Nikes, but if they don't work out, I'll try the Adidas. Thanks

I didn't mention the black adidas (I always equate black with winter) but I think they are also pretty popular city sneakers. No idea about comfort for those.

BrieN: I really like the idea of Nike Air Pegasus. I'm going to order a pair and hopefully make these my third pair of shoes. I find my Superga sneakers uncomfortable to walk long distances in and given the popularity of the Nikes in NYC, they should work out. Thanks.

Last time in NYC in the spring I brought my Superga sneakers in that same light grey as the chucks. They are similar to the Chuck Taylors but more comfortable...

You might also consider the retro sneakers like the Nike Air Pegasus. That was popular at least last spring.

And I agree with Suz. 3 pairs

shevia: I agree about comfort and glad to know sneakers are widely worn.
gradfashionista: I forgot that NYC has hills and stairs and if it rains it will be slippery. I'll make sure to have grippy soles.
Suz: The EF sandals are just my style and maybe I should get them for part two of our trip when we visit family in the midwest.
chadya: I would rather wear my short hikers than regular sport shoes. The ECCO shoes I ordered seem to be a leather oxford with sneaker soles. Slipon sneakers sound really good, too.
alaskagirl: I can't wait to get them. I have never tried them but they are cute and look very able to take the cobblestones and stairs of NYC.
CocoLion: Super cute slipons. I'll give them a try, too.
JAileen: We will be staying near the marina and will take the Wall Street Ferry to NYC. It's fast and we'll get to see that beautiful skyline every day.
Angie: I will take my sneakers, too. I'm thinking about my black Timberland Glastonburys and maybe the white slip-on Vans. Glad to hear that sneakers fit in NYC style.
Joyce B: I know you are right about people not caring about what I'm wearing and my main concern is what will be comfortable. I have no experience walking in a big city and lots of experience walking in the mountains and desert. I have hiking boots and I guess I want to find something appropriate for a city with the comfort of a hiking boot.

Agree with Angie on the sneakers plus, quite frankly, in NYC nobody cares about what others are wearing, they have seen it all. Also, sneakers do not scream "tourist", many people wear them on their way to work and then they change.

Ecco shoes are great for my particular feet and they make great walking shoes. I have a pair of the sneakers similar to the ones you ordered but in a pewter like Ummlila's. Mine are the summery version with mesh -- I bought them for a trip to China in summer, where they were great.

I agree that sandals could cause blisters. I remember some memorable ones from one of my first NYC trips, in fact. Nowadays I will still wear sandals in NYC but selectively -- only the most comfy, and only if they have enough of a wedge that I feel lifted off the pavement, LOL.

Another brand you might consider is Sofft. And pricey but possibly useful would be a shoe similar to the ones below. They can look a bit dressy, would not be too hot, yet have a bit of openness in case it is warm.

ETA: I have not had a problem with light coloured shoes in Beijing (talk about a dirty city!!! The air itself is so polluted you can see it!!) or in NYC. I don't know what it is but I seem to be able to keep the footwear relatively clean except in rainy conditions.

Lots of sneakers. You want footwear that can do hills, slippery stairs and slopes, and cobblestones. Anything with a rubber grip will serve you well.

I would take the two most comfortable, washable and walkable shoes and not worry about looking touristy. It is hard to look exceptional in NYC and anyway I saw mostly sneakers when I was there last autumn.

CocoLion: I picked light colored shoes because I thought I would fit in but if dark colored shoes are worn in late May, then I'm OK with it and I'd be happy to wear them. I'd really not like to have to fuss with cleaning shoes on vacation. Thanks.
alaskagirl: I'm impressed - 8 miles in Joshua Tree in Mary Janes. I'm going to search for these ASAP.
Sandy G: Great idea - water repellant spray. Living in the desert SW, I know nothing about rainy weather, so thank you.

I know we will be doing a lot of walking because we will stay in Jersey City and take the ferry to NYC every day and use the subways. DH loves art museums and I'm sure we'll be visiting every one. We'll probably not spend more than a few evenings in the city seeing plays but I'll take a dressier pair for nighttime.
Jenn: I've never tried Chucks so am glad to get the warning about the lack of padding. My Superga sneakers are also hard to wear for a lot of walking, too, so I know what you mean about the importance of support.
Deborah: I really like the Timberland Battleboro booties which are very similar the black Timberland Glastonburys that I got last year. Do you think they would be too hot for that time of year?
Suz: We will be walking for miles every day. I prefer sandals but am wondering if shoes that I can wear socks with would help with potential blisters. My preference would be to wear my Keen Targee low hikers as I can walk forever in them but they are not city shoes. I hadn't even considered the possibility of rain so thank you for mentioning it, I'll look for rain shoes. The last time we were in NYC it was October and we had perfect weather.
El Cee: I was wondering about whether sandals would work because of the streets - I don't want dirty feet either.
Laura: I'm beginning to realize that lace up shoes are probably going to be what is going to work best. Hope I can find some cute ones.
Umm Lila: Thanks for the recommendation. I'm going to order those Ecco shoes and give them a try. I love the red color they come in.
Style Fan: Yes, it's hard to know what is going to work when one doesn't have much experience with city walking.

Here's my experience -- I took dedicated walking booties, black MBT ankle boots, on my fall trip to NYC and walked 9 miles a day sightseeing, shopping and walking Central Park in Manhattan. Even the main shopping avenues were kinda dirty so your mileage may vary with light colored shoes, but I don't like to travel with dirty looking footwear. Black was fine. I had sprayed them with water repellent before the trip so dirt was easy to clean off each night. I packed dressy-but-walkable shoes for dinner and the shorter walks to the theatre each night. One afternoon when I was far from the hotel and sore-footed, I hailed a cab and felt like a lady of leisure Budget for it and enjoy!

I am the opposite of Suz (and a par pod flyer - never take more than a carry on). I try to get away with one or two pairs no matter how long the trip. My Jambu Mary Janes are good for just about everything casual and I even wore them on an 8 mile hike in Joshua Tree....

Cons are not all day walking shoes for most. And I would road test everything well in advance! New Yorkers are stylish but practical too given their daily routines.

I think you are on the right track with these shoes. I lived in NYC a long time ago (mid-late 80s). I wore flat booties or low heeled booties and sneakers. I walked from my office in mid-town (50s and Park) down to 7th Street and Avenue B on a regular basis. Back then I only wore the sneakers for the long walk home. I'd wear the booties from East to West Village on a regular basis though. Now shoes have good insoles although the soles aren't what they used to be.

I see you have picked light shoes. As one of the world's biggest cities, the streets are dirty. Are you ok with your light colored shoes getting/showing dirt? I would pick a dark pair in addition to the light ones, or light ones that clean easily with a magic eraser (so, NOT suede ... I'm speaking from experience).

Echoing the others in saying the Cons would not be a great choice.

I am so not a sneakers for travel person. I'm a big fan of oxfords and socks for sophisticated city travels.

But I did not follow this plan on either my last weekend in DC or last weekend in NY last fall. In NY I wore block heel boots and these loafers (I have black patent) that Angie helped me select. It was a business trip. Someone asked me if they were Dior shoes. I was not offended.

On a trip to DC my overly energetic 16 year old made me go to, like, every museum. One day we walked 11 miles. I found a nice comfy shoe store in Georgetown, my college stomping grounds, and bought these amazingly comfortable sneakers,

I agree that Chucks would not be supportive enough for me for long days of walking on pavement. When I'm doing tons of walking I prefer lace-up shoes (adjustable as the day goes on) that I can wear with socks (absorbent, helps avoid blisters). Boots/high-tops or sandals might not work for all the weather; I'd pick something in-between since the time period you're talking about is transitional weather wise.

Late May and early June is a lovely time to visit New York City. The temps are usually warm (in the mid to high 70's F) and it is not usually overly humid. You will get cooler temps in the evening, so be sure to bring layers (sweaters or light jackets). You may even see some 80 and 90 degree (F) temps by mid June, so be prepared for that too. You may want to pack lightweight rain gear (such as a packable trench) as those months can also have solid periods of rain.

http://www.ny.com/general/weather.html

Regarding shoes, I would wear something with good arch supports (so Chucks are not ideal unless you are wearing them with orthotics.) I personally do not like to wear sandals or open toed footwear around New York as your feet can get pretty dirty. (I am a native New Yorker, so I can vouch for this.)

Weather in late May early June could be anywhere from temperate to soaring heat.

Will you walk a lot in the city? Are you used to walking a lot? I am a constant walker but I walk even more on big urban vacations and my suggestion is to ignore the advice about limiting footwear. A change is BETTER than a rest when you are in NYC. Options and switching footwear out improves your comfort as well as your fashion quotient. If I am going for 5 days, I always bring at least 3 pairs of shoes! For several weeks, I'd bring four (at least). My priorities would be:

One all day walking shoe that looks great with various outfits. (Or bootie).

One rain proof or at least rain worthy shoe or bootie that is comfortable for all day walking. (Could be thunderstorms at that time of year.)

One "dressy" shoe, sandal, or bootie (depending on time of year) for going out in the evening. In May/ June, this might be what would count as a heeled shoe for you.

Angie always says to build your outfits from the footwear up. It's great advice. But also for your trip -- consider what you will be doing and then pack accordingly. Do you have a shoe that works with each proposed outfit? If not, either change your outfits or add a shoe.

I am super conscious of weather issues. At a transitional season like the one you are facing I would be checking weather reports for the weeks before the trip and re-calculation my packing based on that. You might need two rain worthy shoes, or two pairs of sandals. Depending on temperatures and your heat/ cold tolerance.

My favourite footwear in past visits to NYC (depending on season) -- low wedge gladiator sandals; low heeled booties. I would not walk around on shoes without any cushioning or support. I do not care for walking in shoes that have a flat rigid footbed and Cons without insole or wedge heel are a nightmare for my particular feet. (I do have some Hi-Ness Cons that I find comfortable but they are a low wedge.)

Based purely on your style and not really knowing what the weather is like at that time of year, I like the sandal and the Timberland Brattleboro for you.

I'm not an East Coaster, so I can't help stylewise for NYC norms. However, as much as I love my Chucks, I wouldn't choose them for long days walking on concrete. There's just not enough padding. I think one sandal + one sneaker would be a good idea, since you can dress the sandal up a little more than the lace-ups.

I will be in NYC for a couple of weeks in late May early June. I will be doing a lot of walking to museums, etc. I've never been there in spring so have no idea of the weather and what to wear but I'm going to start planning what to take with the shoes. My style is modern, casual, arty, and tomboy. Would these shoes be OK? I'm only planning to purchase and bring two of them, so which would be best? Any other ideas would be welcome. I don't want to look too touristy.
