October can be a quirky month, weather-wise. You could get an indian summer and a leather jacket or blazer may wind up being just fine. Or you could get a cold snap where it feels like it's already winter.

In Boston for example we have had it snow on halloween!!! And then there are halloweens when the kids are running around in shorts without a coat. (Without fail, however, by Thanksgiving you're freezing your butt off ;-)

So I'd recommend keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, and preparing for either contingency. Bring lots of layers.

For a stylish coat, check out Jcrew. They usually have an excellent selection of coats (though not quite yet - still a bit early). The coat I bought last year would work from fall through spring, and depending on what you wear underneath, is good for all but the coldest winter days.

Maya knows her New York Definitely get some flat boots! You could go for the recent "it" boot here at YLF:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....rchresults

Very comfy and on trend.

I'd also go for a trench (with a zip-out lining would be convenient). An anorak would be more sporty but also suitable, if that's your style.

I try to go to NYC every fall to visit a friend who lives in Queens. I know they've had a cool summer this year so I'm not sure if that will make a difference. When I went last October, I just wore layers or a light jacket. If you're doing a lot of walking you may get pretty warm. I remember getting pretty warm when we went inside but I was also 6 months pregnant. I have also gone in November and it got pretty cold, especially at night. I second Maya on the trench. Have fun! New York is one of the best cities in the world!

Flat boots, hands down, no question. Oxfords and fashion sneakers are also reasonable alternates, but it's just too cold to wear anything else that will expose skin. It's not freezing but it is uncomfortable. NYers do not hesitate to bring out the boots at the first sign of a leaf falling.

For a coat, an all-weather trench is your best bet.

Oh how fun for you to go to NYC. I would love to do that. I do not know a thing about the weather there in October but wanted to say how fantastic for you to have this vacation. I imagine the leaves will be turning colors and it will be a great time to go there.

Hi there,
My husband and I are going to New York for a short vacation in mid October.
We plan to see a lot of sites, and will be doing major walking.

Can anyone recommend a stylish yet very comfortable pair of shoes, as well as a coat that would be suitable for this time of year (that would go with jeans).

Thanks!
