Diane - You're right! Most of my duplicated items have been getting plenty of wear! And those that aren't, I learned from.

Lisa - Do you wear your duplicates? I find it simplifies dressing equations for me, because I have fewer subtly varying silhouettes amongst my essentials.

gradfashionista - Good question... it made me think! I tend to duplicate within the same season, often buying one and then picking up another end-of-season clearance sales after I know it works. The pieces with manufacturing longevity (Converse shoes, London Fog trenches), I tend to serially replace rather than duplicate.

Ledonna - It's just the ease of knowing what works!

Style Fan - Be careful about adding colors!

La Pedestrienne - It's weird, right? I bet they have to use a different fiber blend to get the black dye to stick.

Sally - I wish those silk tops had been higher quality. Live and learn.

Sterling - I am hoping this "picking winners" thing is a skill that improves over time.

Brooklyn - High five burgundy twin! :)

Tisa and Joy - I seem to recall that duplicating in the same color is Angie's recommendation, as well.

shevia - True!

What Tisa said. Duplicating in different colors rarely works very well for me except for footwear when I find something I love. Repeating the same color makes more sense when it is an essential.

Even if you wear the duplication less, it may give needed variety from the default item. I have duplicated Pleione crossover tops, which have been my summer tee, and no regrets even if the white is worn most often.

Smittie wrote it perfectly - you know what you like and where to get it, good for you!

I have found that buying duplicates in different colours rarely works for me, because I always like one colour more than the other. Which means I usually choose to wear the item that I prefer, while the other one stays in the closet.
On the other hand, buying an exact (same colour) duplicate of a favourite piece is always a good choice. Especially when it's a basic and/or often worn item.

It sounds like you have mostly had success. I don't think it's a bad thing to duplicate. I often duplicate on basics, or essentials, or whatever it is that we call them here. I think it might have been Angie who said that a second is often a good idea but a third can prove to be an orphan. I duplicated this uniqlo top in black, blue and white and the white is definitely the least worn. But that is because of the colour - it gets dirty from make up and sun block so easily and I am never wild about white near my face. Now, if the third top had been burgundy, I am pretty sure my decision to duplicate would be a complete success story.

Interesting!!

I think Suz hit on the reasons - I rarely duplicate because I like variety but I have been successful on those rare occasions (jeans, shorts, tanks, tees). But you are right - one always does become more popular!!

I love those silk tops - especially the yellow!

What is it about black jeans?! I've tried to dupe a couple pairs of blue jeans in black, but the black version is never as good. Too tight, too scratchy, weird seams... I thought it was just a personal curse, but maybe it's something bigger. I've had to back burner my quest for great black/grey jeans...

I think it is a great idea to duplicate pieces that work so well for you. When something ticks all the boxes then grab another. I bought a T shirt in the fall thinking it would be a dog walking T and nothing special. It fits perfectly, is nice and soft and is brown. I love it. So I bought another one in the same colour and one in orange. I also plan on duplicating my favourite boots. I will try and get them in another colour.

Well, I think you've had some good reasons for duplicating and with some items it sounds like you've been getting a stack of wear out of them. Good move to keep hold of the black jeans and yellow top.

Sara and Suz - I don't see the olive tunic getting much more wear. The color is just not quite right, and I always feel a little dead in it. Maybe with a scarf, but honestly, it cost so little, that I'm pretty okay with just passing it on.

The yellow silk is worth keeping around, I think, just for something different. Ditto the black jeans.

Suz, that's a really good point about the natural fibers. It's hard to find items that meet my standards, so it does make sense to duplicate when I do. These items, together, make up the bulk of my wardrobe, and certainly the bulk of my essentials.

That last comment just says it all for me...so often when I duplicate this is what happens. The thing I loved about the original just isn't there with the second item - but no way to tell that in advance, alas.

smittie - I think it's just the fit on the black jeans. They're the same style and size, but the fabric is slightly different than the blue and burgundy, which makes them less comfortable.

Interesting. I think it partly resulted from a desire to focus on natural fibres and also when one finds a useful item that fits well...it's very tempting, esp. if it is a high use category of clothing for you.

You might wear the yellow tunic more in spring/ summer. Ditto the olive tunic.

Ha! Well, now that you know which items are underutilized, could you make a challenge to yourself to wear those items more often? You could wear the olive shirt and black jeans together. That's one of my favorite color combinations.

As I was putting away laundry last night, I was shocked to realize I've become a duplicator without even realizing it.

Photo 1: Linen-blend tunic tees. I bought three of these and, arguably, should probably have just gotten two. I've tracked 27 wears of the black one, 20 of the maroon, and only 6 of the olive.

Photo 2: Athleta v-neck tunics. I don't consistently track wears on gear-specific purchases, but I've been wearing these each at least once a week for years. I wish I'd gotten more.

Photo 3: Lucky Brand silk tunics. One probably would have been enough. I've worn the burgundy 12x and the yellow print 6x.

Finds 1/2: UO slippers. I got two pairs of these Mary Janes. Unfortunately, they fit differently, and I forgot how they break in with wear. I'll wear both, but I wish I'd gotten two pairs of the black velvet instead of trying to be different.

Find 3: Black button-down. Bought this to be a part of my "work uniform," but it turned out to make a perfect nightshirt, so I duplicated in the same color. Worn 8x for day-wear so far (I track exact dupes by adding their costs together and tracking them as a single item.) There will be more wear, so no regrets.

Find 4: Boden V-neck Ravello. Bought in both black and ivory. I've worn the ivory 6x and the black 4x. They're fairly new, though, so I expect some longevity. No regrets.

Finds 5-7: Same jeans, different colors. I've worn the blue 61x, burgundy 24x, and black 8x. I sort of regret the black.

Not shown: I have four of the same black tank top from Duluth Trading Co (and three more in different colors), three of the same black pajama shorts from Target, three of the same style leggings (in different colorways) from Athleta. No regrets on any of these, except that I think I'd prefer all black leggings.

I had no idea I'd become so consistent in my shopping. Seriously, when did that happen?
