<p>Lol, it SHOULD be a code word for a species of hipster, but no. We are indeed talking Pepe Le Pew. I was *like*: “I’ll trap them. YOU release them.”</p>

<p>ok...i'm confused.&nbsp; are "urban skunks" the four legged variety that live in populated areas or a code word for some kind of hipster or other two legged urban dweller?

<p>Food desert is the word. But oh gosh, when I moved to my last place, total hipster neighborhood and sliding into gentrification, I had this neighbor doing her PhD in food deserts. Problem is, ok, she wanted a trap-and-release program for urban skunks. I mean, people are just not clear on how things work even when they sorta know.

<p>They like to use the word "food deserts" for areas like that. No proper grocery store, just convenience stores selling a lot of processed junk-no produce to speak of.

<p>Yeah, when I was little Mexican Americans checked the ‘white’ box on surveys. </p>
<p>It’s interesting... I moved into the ghetto because I didn’t realise it was so bad. It was a couple of blocks from my uncle’s - yeah, on the other side of the creek - but I didn’t understand then. The apartment was large and clean. There were trees. I drove to the grocery in the rich town, where my uncle shopped. But a couple of months in, I realised there was no supermarket in my actual town. And I noticed the police parked on the other side of the bridge across the creek. I started watching. You could only get a half a block down if you walked across it certain times. I used to see people get escorted out of the library by the police, you know, for like sitting and reading a magazine.</p>
<p>Grocery shopping was so interesting. It’s not that no one had a car, but you had to have gas money. So people would do these big expeditions, like we lived out in the country.</p>
<p>Oh and yeah, for sure they charge way higher prices in the rich areas for the same products... altho, funny, gas is high in both poor and rich areas. You have to find a middle middle neighborhood for an ok gas price.

<p><div>My gosh, Rachey, I can't even imagine struggling like that.&nbsp; An honest-to-goodness ghetto.&nbsp; Where I grew up in Southern California, there was absolutely no discrimination against Mexican-Americans.&nbsp; Among the most popular kids in my high school - class officers, prom queens. But all the black people lived North of a particular street of the town and, I believe, nowhere else.&nbsp; But not in conditions anything like you've described. They went to the same schools and people had jobs and cars and I don't remember their houses looked any different. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Here where I live, the only large supermarket in the entire city was in walking distance from us, near the edge of the city.&nbsp; And then it closed.</div><div>After some years, a 'regular" supermarket opened a lower-priced store in the same building.&nbsp; When it first opened, there would be shelves stacked high with hundreds of one product, one version.&nbsp; I was in the store when one of the owners/managers was giving a tour and talking to somebody official looking about this store.&nbsp; He said they would never open a store like this in a nearby affluent suburb, of course, but here....<br /></div>

<p>Oh Vildy, that is so terrible.</p>
<p>I have to add that in case it seems like arbitrary violence to folk... I’ll tell you about the origins of my town: It was the other side of a creek. Back in the day, all the coloured people who did all the work on the rich side were driven over the creek at sundown. Officially, this is not so anymore. Reality is, it is. There was no grocery. Just liquor stores (because the rich town was also ‘dry,’ all the liquor stores were right there on the other side of the creek). There were no buses, except one once a month to visit the jail. You have all these people imprisoned in a few square miles fighting over scraps. Yes, you better believe they fought hard.

<p><div>Rachy, I'm not up on carved-out gang territory here but there is obviously some.&nbsp; When our kid was in 8th grade at a school that was pre-k through 8, one Friday the district ordered that the class be moved over to a junior high in the adjoining neighborhood on Monday.&nbsp; Like they were furniture.</div><div><br /></div><div>Kids and parents alike were panicking.&nbsp; The principal told me I was the one who could stop it. (already preparing, as were many, many others, to home school).&nbsp; I did stop it through a series of community meetings. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>What was the problem with this? Our son attended that very school in the summer where there was a district-wide magnet arts program. <br /></div><div>Now, he hated it because it was serious work:D, but that program was run by a different building principal than the one during the school year.</div><div>There was *no* trouble, violence, fighting.&nbsp; Nothing. Our kid has hemophilia and yet I was totally calm the whole time he was there. The regular school year was another story. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>One of the school board members asserted it was the white parents who were afraid.&nbsp; Ignoring the meeting hall packed with black parents who were adamant their children weren't going there. They knew that the problem was territory.&nbsp; That their black children would be targeted by the black children there. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The transfer was stopped but the next year was accomplished. In the first few days of school, a girl got her had slammed with a metal door locker and was taken to the hospital where she remained in a coma.</div><div>So, yeah, territory.<br /></div>

<p>
<div>Ghetto used to mean a section of a city where a related group of people was segregated.&nbsp; Warsaw Ghetto.&nbsp; Nowadays it's often used to refer to behavior that links people vs having to live within boundaries.&nbsp; That behavior would flout traditional standards or be a "sub-standard" way of accomplishing something. The people would tend to be people of color living in poor, neglected areas (or practically the whole city where I live) prone to high crime and violence.&nbsp; The word, which probably started out derogatory, has since been taken over in the same way that pejorative words like "queer" or 'dyke" have been "reclaimed".&nbsp; Some of these folks might admonish each other to stop acting ghetto while to others it is an identity and they're proud of it.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>My son, who's white, was talking to his friends, white and black, about a party they were going to attend when they were in high school or college. "What's the dress? Full on ghetto?"&nbsp; They agreed it was. <br /></div><div>Another way to think of that attire is "urban" or "street."&nbsp; It's primarily a youth thing.&nbsp; Middle aged people tend to dress middle aged. And the people the designers are copying are not the middle aged.&nbsp; Showing that you can always rely on some things staying the same.<br /></div>
</p>
<p>ETA: well, there was Normcore but that started out as a joke and tends to mockery.&nbsp; Whereas street is presented as desirable and cool. </p>
<p>ETA: does not have to be restricted to people of color. It's just a recognized form of behavior, as I've said above.&nbsp; My one-time neighbor, a white woman in her early 30's remarked that no one better mess with her. She pulled a knife out of her pocket and proclaimed, "I'll CUT 'em!"</p>
<p>It's a frame of mind.</p>
<p></p>

<p>Yes, I always admire them on the fancystuffandprettythings but she uses more of a loafers style. Oxford styled really would be too masculine for me, but I bought this one pointy toed</p>

<p>I will wear jeans and a tee shirt but the males in the house wear shorts and sweatshirts and or puffers as their preferred winter attire.&nbsp; If I cold enough for a puffer my legs are covered...</p>
<p>I like mules and backless shoes but my calves complain.&nbsp; I must clench my toes or something.&nbsp; I love having a pair for visiting houses where shoes come on and off all day.....&nbsp; but I don't walk substantial distances in them.

<p>That’s very interesting, Vildy!</p>
<p>I had the cutest little cropped jacket, but couldn’t wear it because it was Blue. I lived in Red territory. Still rather bummed about that.

<p><div>In my neighborhood, which is, as you say, ghetto, folks both men and women have been wearing those sneaker slides for a long time. They just smash down the backs of their shoes.&nbsp;&nbsp; They also wear big fuzzy slippers as snow boots.&nbsp; I'll never forget when my grade school kid was going to the mall with his online girl friend and her dad was picking them up.&nbsp; It was close to 90 degrees and he wore a knit hat.&nbsp; Was he crazy? <br /></div><div>She showed up in the same thing!&nbsp; When he was older and riding the city bus to school, he had a thick knit tibetan hat with the ear flaps and ties hanging down.&nbsp; A kind older boy told him that was what gang leaders wore and he better not be "challenging" them that way or he'd be beaten. He took it off.<br /></div>

<p>So unless you want some variation of the infamous Gucci mule, you'll be hunting secondary market<br />Found these two, but they're sold out

<p>ETA and of course I have some weird random shoe style ;)<br />
pic, brand is Ter et Batine. I got them a few years ago at a warehouse style sale<br />

<p>Have to say, that little detail... oxford slides v plain slides... really that made a huge difference.</p>
<p>Ok, but now I’m having a flashback to when I lived in the ghetto and those spaghetti-strap terry ‘tracksuits’ we’re popular. So I got one too and my bf at the time was *all*, ‘You’re not wearing that out on the street?!’ Of course I was! Anyways, big laugh since so was everybody else! Lol!

<p>Does not compute for me. My feet are the first part of me to get cold. If I’m in a puffer, I’d better have closed shoes on! </p>
<p>I love the look of backless oxfords, loafers, mules, etc, but apparently I am a disaster in them. They just go flying off my feet.
