I have a pretty clear idea of what's '90s fashion looks like to me and loved the clothes (not everything, but a lot). I wonder if that's because I was in high school and college at the time. All the fun stuff, like clunky shoes, baby-doll dresses, flannels, etc. seemed to skew pretty young, so that's the clothing I remember when I think about the decade.

When it comes to what actual grown women were wearing, it is kind of hard for me to think of much. Mostly, what I can remember is minimal black outfits, leftover '80s power suits, heeled loafers, and mom jeans with plain t-shirts tucked in and puffed out. None of which seem remotely as fun as a little flowered dress with combat boots.

I feel there are styles to love and hate from each decade. I know I do it, generalize about a decade, like that's so 70s, but in truth, there is diversity to each decade. What is not to love about the tailored minimalism and focus on suiting from the 90s. On the other hand, I cringe at the midi country dress with bobby socks, sneakers, and a t shirt layered underneath. Add big curls and a hat too.

Yes. I think that too about DMs.

I have some favourite things that come from the '90s, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fashion "zeitgeist" ... and I'm not feeling it. It won't come into focus for me...

The '90s is my least favourite decade - too much head to toe black, grunge, dressy outfit severity, pull-on pant sloppiness, crocheted boho, and chunky soles on shoes. The overall vibe was ultra casual and less interesting/dressy/colourful than the '80s. I agree - generally a bland fashion decade.

That said, there was lots to love about the decade too. I LOVED checked shirts, power suits, 501s, low rise pants and jeans, short A-line skirts, natural hair, small shoulders and less pronounced make-up. The decade paved the way for outfit minimalism and simplicity which is a look close to my heart.

Btw, Docs are late '70s and '80s fashion to me. That's when the punk movement in Britain made the shoe a fashion statement. It's not '90s thing in my mind.

That's a memorable passage, is it not? Just something about it. The bulk buying of anonymous stuff, maybe.

Interesting search: "fashion blandness and the 1990s"

People have been talking about it.

Yeah, kind of, but I have seen this passage from William Gibson, talking about his protagonist, marketer Cayce Pollard also referenced in the normcore thng: "She rolls over, abandoning this pointless parody of sleep. Gropes for her clothes. A small boy's black Fruit Of The Loom T-shirt, thoroughly shrunken, a thin gray V-necked pullover purchased by the half-dozen from a supplier to New England prep schools, and a new and oversized pair of black 501's, every trademark carefully removed. Even the buttons on these have been ground flat, featureless, by a puzzled Korean locksmith, in the Village, a week ago."

Gibson's descriptions of his characters are so apt, and always a bunch of years ahead.
