Thanks everyone, I am still thinking and trying things on, I have not exhausted possibilities yet as this was my first try, it may be the one.
It feels fine when I sit and does not move.

I think it looks like your vest fits really well. I also think the unbuttoned vest is a casual look, and so you need a more casual shirt underneath rather than the buttoned shirt. I think unbuttoned over a graphic tee, or a tunic would definitely work.

Yes, GG, it looks like it fits to me, but it's hard to say since I'm not you. What happens when you sit down while it's buttoned? For me, that is always the litmus test. If it doesn't fit, it will be too uncomfortable and/or will move around funny (i.e., create gaps at the shoulders or slide down; creep up in the belly area or too much at the back; etc) when I sit down. My BR vest is so fitted, it doesn't budge, but it does get tight. I'm used to it - reminds me not to eat too much! My other vest is quite loose and forgiving, but it doesn't move around when I sit either. I have tried on a lot that do move around when i sit down - usually the issue is the length from shoulder to armpit is too long (creates a gap at shoulder) or it's too tight at the last button that needs to go over my tummy, causing it to ride up and reveal unsightly tummy bulge.

If it fits right, the vest should stay PUT when you sit down. IMO!

Jean, the vest looks like it fits you very well. I also have an AT vest from consignment that fits like yours. It has a rounded almost Peter pan-like "collar" that I like for the touch of femininity. It doesn't feel right yet worn open but I'm still experimenting. Mine seems to work best with blouses with more volume.

Jean, in your search, have you come across any grey pinstriped vests?

I am looking for one to go over a white, short-sleeved ruffled blouse, but I may have missed the boat on that until fall.

Thank you all for your input!!
Iwc, where did you get yours? I think I will try on a few before I decide on one. I have had a hard time locating one that is not pinstriped, that is not a great look for me.
I also think that I would definitely like one that would work both buttoned and unbuttoned. I like unstructured looks sometimes.

I agree, a vest can definitely be worn unbuttoned, although it would probably look better that way for a less structured shirt or blouse - a graphic tee for example. It looks great on you!

Hey GG!

I tried on that vest at ATL, and put it back because it just didn't fit perfectly, esp. in the shoulders. I also realized that I needed something with more coverage, a narrower v-neck, and more buttons, since I'm short-waisted. This vest has a wide v-neck, almost u-neck, and only 4 buttons, versus a narrower v-neck and 6 buttons. Sounds nitpicky, but for someone built like me, it makes a difference in the look.

The vest looks better buttoned over a button-down shirt, with your skirt. Opened, it makes your outfit look unstructured and not as pulled together.
I think that a vest can work opened over a fitted tee, especially a graphic tee. I plan to wear mine buttoned regardless, just cuz I prefer a structured, sleek look.

If the vest is uncomfortable, then take it back. There are lots out there to choose from.

Hope this helps!

Do you like the vest and the way it fits, I would not keep it unbuttoned with this buttondown. I agree it looks weird. But in general, is the proportion and fit of the vest working? Thanks!

Yeah, there's something distracting to me about the buttons of the buttondown, and the buttons of the vest, when worn open. I don't think it's horrible or a definite no - just looks better buttoned. Is it uncomfortable when you button it?

But I do think this vest can be worn unbuttoned and not just buttoned. The key to me is that it still provides structure and a curve in at your waist, even if it is left unbuttoned.

Another alternative is to keep it buttoned when standing, and unbutton it when sitting. That's what you're supposed to do with jackets, so why not do the same with a vest?

Hmm. I think that waistcoats can be worn unbuttoned but I don't know that it works with that particular outfit. It's the button-down blouse that's driving that decision, I think; if you had on a looser, t-shirt/blouse type of top on the open waistcoat would work better. But with a button-down the waistcoat being buttoned too makes it look more put-together.

None from ATL. My two vests are from BR and Necessary Objects. The BR vest is *very* fitted. I know what you mean about wearing unbuttoned. This one would probably be more comfortable that way, but yeah, I do leave it buttoned because it's kinda like a corset and it keeps me mindful of posture if I don't unbutton. The Necessary Objects vest fits more easily - but doesn't look as good unbuttoned.

Can you show us pics?

I just bought a new waistcoat at ATL. It fits perfectly but feels a bit snug when buttoned, the next size up is too big. I love the look of it fitted. Can you wear vests unbuttoned fashionably? I will try wearing it around the house buttoned and see if it gives. It does not look too small. Shiny, do you have one from ATL?
