Lol @FashIntern it's possible that's the reason, but I think really I used to be very self conscious about my butt full stop because I grew up with very modest dressing guidelines, so anything that would emphasise it or point out that I have one would frustrate me. But I think I'm learning to embrace it now - it may not be traditional figure flattery goals, but someone mentioned on the other thread that I shouldn't just focus on the parts of my body that I want to hide (like my lower stomach, upper arms & upper legs), but also the parts I like (such as my waist, bubble butt, long neck & nails). Does it sound weird to want to show off nails, lol? :P

@BlondeAmbition I actually just rediscovered an A-line skirt that I thought I had lost! I might do a WIW with it (I've commented in the past that I prefer to keep my knees & most of my legs covered, but this slightly above-the-knee length actually looks more flattering on my short height). I think the belt width really depends on the silhouette of the clothing in section -
an A-line skirt works better for me with a thin belt if it already has a medium width, structured waistband. If it doesn't, a wider belt can help create that. Anyway, I'll never know until I try, so time to experiment!

A line skirts in any length would work fabulously on you, especially with a body con top tucked in. Also, if you wear belts stick to skinny belts vs. thick belts. I think they work better but that could just be on my body since my hips are much wider.

I like that pick. It’s a great color for you and clearly isn’t tight, as it’s loose in front. Cool that you know that a butt that can be a shelf can be sought after. Could it be that tunics remind you of shalwar, and that’s why the body-con backside bugs you, because it is *not* what shalwar do?

I tried the tunic on again today & it looks like the fit is different now. It's loose around the waist (like it's meant to hang just straight down) but then it ends up 'sitting' on the top of my butt, like a shelf lol. I guess that's what's contributing to the fact that it looks like the fabric is pulling across my butt? I'll upload a photo later if I can, & maybe a WIWT Outfit Post that I have with a wrap dress (that someone else suggested), so you can see how that hangs on me too.

Also sorry if I haven't managed to reply to everyone yet - a reply/ quote function would be useful for remembering what the other person said when typing a response, lol! Anyway thanks to whoever said they like my new hair - it's much appreciated, though I'm still trying to figure out how to style it without blow drying or damaging my hair all the time!

@Jenni NZ Thank you - I live for colour! Yet another way I won't ever fit into local ways of dressing, but I don't mind lol. I'd say my ideal style would be somewhere between Iris Apfel, Dita Von Teese & Tracey from Chewing Gum - a lot of colour & accessories, but tastefully done for an hourglass figure, lol

Oh sorry yes, I forgot to mention that I did buy the tunic lol. It's final sale, so no returns at this point anyway.

Lol yes butts exist, but how much is 'too much' is subjective. It was considered an 'asset' (haha sorry!) when I was in Brazil, but most people Hong Kong don't have butts as big as mine, so I do sometimes feel self conscious here. Especially since the simple fact is that a curvier body means it's easier to look 'scandalous' if something is too tight or short. But I'm a 2XL here anyway, so I don't think any style of dressing is going to make me look like a local anyway

Zaeobi did you buy the tunic? I think it is really nice on you. If I understand what you mean by the “s curve” I honestly don’t think it’s a “problem” (recognizing that I am saying this from outside, and your own comfort is paramount). I mean...butts exist, right? They are going to show in clothes. The tunic doesn’t seem like an overtly “sexy” style so I don’t think it’s inappropriate to see your shape somewhat. I like the color for you A LOT.

I didn't buy the orange wrap top (I agree with @Liz that it's too tight all around - I agree with @Vildy that the overall fit in general is OK but I do need a bigger size, & unfortunately that was the last available one, lol). But I just wanted to say that the orange tunic actually was a thicker ponte sort of fabric, yet I still got that pulling around the butt. (Like @RachyLou's test there wasn't any belly button indentation, but my stomach just stuck out a little in it).

I think the S curve is just something I'm going to have to embrace - not really a 'problem' as such, since big butts are finally in lol! Also, I realise now in retrospect that asking my partner whether the tunic fits OK was a bad idea, since of course he WANTS to see the outline of my arse & was therefore going to approve it, lol! No worries, I can maybe wear it with one of my long open cardigans to hide the back view a little (can't scroll up to see who said it, but this may also help with the length issue that someone mentioned - since I've been dressing as a pear for most of my life, I often employ the long over lean look (long & slim open layers for vertical integrity, with leggings or something similarly tight on the bottom) to keep my hips in check.

Also, I've tried higher end bottoms & pencil skirts and I still get the same S curve issue. I don't think I want to fight it anymore. I tried tailoring my bottoms so that they nip in at the waist, flare out over the top of my bottom & then just hang straight down from the widest point (as opposed to going back in), but that actually ends up looking frumpier. I literally look like I'm wearing a bustle if I don't show that my butt goes back in underneath, lol!

I think this may be because I often go for high waist bottoms to help highlight the natural waist & girdle my lower section in (not normal or low rise). I can't really follow traditional apple figure flattery advice because I have a defined waist & two-pack up top, along with no love handles. This lower belly pooch is new though, & therefore something I'm trying to figure out how to camouflage because I'm not used to it. If I go for a normal or low rise, whilst I don't have love handles, I do end up with muffin top overspill from the lower stomach area.

The lower belly gives me problems with belting sometimes, too, even though pears & hourglass shapes are supposed to be well suited for it - if the belt is very wide (almost like a corset) I sometimes get lower stomach spillage from underneath the belt too, lol! I'm not sure what's happening to my body & weight distribution - it might just be age, but also switching to a desk job & maybe my diet isn't as great since I moved abroad. Either way, I wear some light body shaping shorts & do go to the gym regularly when I can (hence the two-pack just below my bust), but I just can't get the lower belly pooch to move, lol!

Re: Bubble hem tops... not sure they'll work for you, but I don't mean ones that sit on your hip. The ones I found recently (Alfani at Macy's) have elastic that sits right at the waistband of my pants (which sit at belly button). Then balloon above to disguise my belly and love handles. As I said, my belly issues are at and above waistband, more than below... though that too... but that part bothers me less.

If you click on my profile and view my posts you can see a few recent WiW's with some of these bubble hem tops to get the idea. I guess they do kind of disguise the lower belly a bit as well, but my primary reason for loving them is for their disguise of love handles!

I think with a two pack you don't need that. I think you need great fitting pants or skirts, tailored perfectly, with tucked or cropped or other form fitting top.

I like the wrap top with peplum!

Not crazy about the tunic. That one might work on me, with my narrow hips/flat butt. Except it'd be too long waisted as my waist is up higher, like yours seems to be too. That tunic just looks too long from shoulder to waist for you. Peplum is better proportionately. This is what I was saying: what works for me (tunics like this) would NOT work for you.

Agree about fabrics. Ponte knits with structure rather than clingy, thin knits for the win! Speaking of fabrics, can you humor me and go to a department store and try on a few Ralph Lauren jersey dresses? I have a hunch. RL jersey dresses aren't thin and clingy, they are substantial fabric and double lined.

This try-on solidifies for me that you ARE an hourglass and NOT an apple. Apple's don't have two-packs above the waist. They just... don't. Apples carry their weight above and at the waist, first and foremost, then maybe also below.

I get the frustration with the lower belly ... I now have that too since hitting menopause and weight gain and everything sinking. Heh. But apple's carry weight at the waist/belly button and above, aka love handles. You don't seem to have that issue.

Yes try belting those cardigans!

Apples hate belts, in general. I've learned to make them work sometimes. But for the most part, hate them.

You really do have a lovely figure and I agree with Liz, we just need to find the right clothes to compliment it!

Yes, thin jersey is hard for anybody to wear! Anybody!!!

I think both tops look good. The second one is clinging a little to the backside, and I’m not sure whether it’s because it’s too small or just a function of the thin jersey knit. It’s probably the thin knit jersey.

You can get these thin jersey tshirts with a curved hem that sweep away from the mid-section. Those would hug the top curves and cover the mid section.

I was referring to the longer top, but if it were me, I'd size up on both orange tops. (The wrap top is tight in the sleeves, bust, and back.) Or, as other posters have suggested, look for heavier knit materials -- this thin jersey is going to be difficult to wear.

Remember: It's not your body that's "wrong" here -- you just need to find the fabrics and cuts that work for you. I think asymmetric & architectural/ edgy clothing on a curvy figure is difficult no matter what size a person is. Generally the lines of these items work best on straighter figures -- on curvier figure (like mine!) our bodies provide the dominant lines, and the straight or edgy lines of the clothing get lost.

Ok, I share this issue. Lots of good advice here... I want to add ‘pay attention to fabric.’ Some fabrics have more ‘body’ than others, hold shape, skim rather than collapse and cling... I have what I call the ‘belly button test’... if a fabric shows where your belly button is, it’s a pass. Not enough ‘body’ to the fabric...

ETA: ok, and now I have read more posts and see y’all already have started discussing fabric... lol. I like the top with the pull strings. I think that works.

I think the first pictures of the wrap top looks great. I'm no fan of most jersey but you got it to work well here. In the 2d pictures of the longer garment that's cupping at the back, I would say that in my eyes you have no figure "problems" or "issues" and just have problems with fabric, cut, fit and sizing that's working against you. Experiment with thicker, firmer stretch fabric like a ponte knit. It won't cling and can smooth over everything nicely.

@Liz which one, the wrap top or the longer one? Yeah, I wish I could find slightly more asymmetric & architectural/ edgy pieces that are cut with a curvier figure in mind, but the only ones I know are plus size (I'm under 5ft4/160cm & wear anything between a UK 8-14/ US 4-10, so I'm sadly not the right size for plus size nor petite!)

@FashIntern I actually quite like the strong princess seams panels, but as you can see my style isn't one for subtle, lol! I have a nice shift/ sheath dress with subtle shaping, so it fits well everywhere... except for the stomach! Arghhh, lol - I think with the extra weight on my shoulders & arms now, I have to be careful about avoiding the pregnant look!

That’s a really strong example of princess seams. Diana can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they are often more subtle than that, so everything just flows smoothly instead of making kind of a peplum.

I hear you on the empire tops. First time I ever saw them was on our middle school band instructor. She wore them frequently, and looked like you describe. Being middle schoolers, we snickered and laughed at her for it. (I couldn’t tell you what a lot of my teachers wore, but I remember those dresses clearly). Definitely a look to avoid.

In all of these little tricks, my preference is always for subtlety, not a clear seam to another piece added on. I wish I knew the right words to say it better.

@Diana So the front of the top is made of 3 vertical panels that flare out at the ends? That looks really nice! I saw the 'corset' description & thought it was this top, lol - the corset idea is nice but the slouchy t-shirt look runs a little too young for me (plus I need shoulder seams & structure to keep my figure in proportion).

I love the color of that top, but I wouldn't choose that cut for you -- it's just not cut to accommodate a curvier figure -- that's why it's pulling so much across your hips /butt. That's also what would be happening with then pencil skirts -- the ones you're describing aren't cut with enough width through the hips. You could deal with this simply by buying a larger size in the skirt and then having the waist narrowed. (I have to do this with pencil skirts.)

@FashIntern I know empire waists seem like the ideal solution but I think with my breast size they also just end up making me look pregnant, lol! Maybe it's because my waist hasn't moved up with the weight gain? It's weird - my waist is still defined (I actually have a two-pack above this belly pooch, lol!) so I think this new belly pooch might actually be in part due to my new desk job (I was teaching before & therefore always on my feet - I've bought a BackJoy to stop any slouching issues whilst in my chair, but I think that still doesn't negate the effect of sitting in a chair for 8 hours a day).

Anyway, fit & flare dresses can work well on me too, but it really depends on the material. If it's too jersey like, I end up with the same problem in my photos above - I'll get the S curve, but just for my stomach instead of my behind. Not attractive, lol!

@Vildy mentioned going for a gently flared version without gathers - I think I need to hunt down something that fits that description. Unfortunately when I try it with a wide belt, I'm often back to the 'S curve in the front' dilemma - I need to find thicker materials that aren't stiff!

@Shiny the cardigan V is something I employ when I can but unfortunately I bought all of my cardigans when I was skinnier. So they're mostly long styles without buttons (because I would use them to create a long & lean style with vertical integrity, to mask my pear-shaped hips). Maybe I should try belting them with a wide belt instead for the same effect?

Bubble hems tops unfortunately don't usually have waist definition & emphasise my hips more because of where the hem stops (a welted band straight across my hips cuts me off at my widest point). That's why I find the half tuck so difficult to pull off on my figure too - if it shows the pooch from my trousers, I end up looking unkempt instead of like a chic, off-duty model, lol!

@EmilyK & @Vildy I also tried on a top with ruching and a slight asymmetric hem the other day (pictures). I never shop in TopShop, because the sizing is usually too small for me, but I tried this on a whim - I'm attaching both the smaller then bigger size, so you can see the difference in how the strategic ruching emphasises or glides over my stomach (can you even call it that, since there's a drawstring attached?). Yay or Nay?

(PS - This kind of material always clings to my rear, so sorry for the view haha! @Shiny mentioned pencil skirts - I have the same issue in those since, instead of just nipping in at my lower back & then sloping straight downwards, I end up with this 'S' curve (my butt sticks out far in relation to where my legs start, so the material gets confused and clings to both), lol!)

@Diana do you have an example of a peplum with vertical seams? Trying to imagine what that would look like - how would the peplum be attached to the body of the garment?

@Shiny I tried on a wrap top with a peplum recently, & I think it looks OK, right? I think the key might be to try peplums in a material that drapes (as opposed to any stiff panels, like peplum blazers).
