I liove the feel and drape of rayon too. I hadn't noticed that rayon/viscose varies in quality, though I hadn't really paid that much attention. My big issue is with how much it SHRINKS. I suppose a cheaply made garment will have no pre-shrinking done before they sew up the garment. In my experience (limited by my penny-pinching) even the more expensive items need to be coddled and not sweated in and reworn because after only a few washes I have to wear the sleeves rolled up because they are too short, and after a few more my daughter gets a new blouse because it's way too small for me.

My dream has always been to buy a length of good white rayon, wash and tumble dry it on high heat a couple of times, and pay a good seamstress to make a perfect classic shirt or blouse out of it.

@harmonica: I totally agree with you on the better comfort of viscose in comparison with polyesters. The dresses in question are typically from Indiska, Bik Bok, Monki, H&M etc. All fast fashion, cheap end shops. I like a lot of the designs, but the quality is not good enough to bother. On the other side, I've also had viscose garments in my own wardrobe that held up through several seasons without any major pill or shrinkage, so you never really now what you get until you try. Last season I saw a viscose blouse from a higher end label. It looked really good, but was VERY expencive. I don't want to pay the same price for viscose as for a real silk blouse only because of a name. It felt almost like they tried to cheat me. Maybe I was wrong?

I like viscose a lot, but as all materials you get good and bad quality. Some items I have, are almost worn out / washed out due to bad quality
@Ingunn: Indiska has a lot of this quality and I agree on fast fashion (cheap, but not durable).

Other viscose items have last for years and years and are still looking good.

I prefer viscose before polyester because of it breaths and can easily be washed. Though not too good in cold temp because it is a "cold fibre". But I don't like polyester because it gets sticky (and I get a rash), do not breath and feels cold against the skin, not like natural fibres that sort of follows your body temp.

My daughter has several cute dresses and skirts in viscose, bought cheap from chain stores. Most of them end up becoming too short after a couple of washes. I use cold water and air drying. This really is the worst kind of "fast fashion" in my opinion. I've told her to look for other materials, or maybe buy better and fewer clothes.

Can be bad--you'll never know until you wash it. The top is really cute. I would be tempted to give it a shot.

I'm good with the silky-strong viscose, not so much the soggy cheap kind.

I think viscose can be a version of rayon, both are man made, but from natural fibers. Like celulose or something. Anyway, I find it to be quite breathable and preferable to polyester any day of the week.

Thanks for the deets, Deb!

I have some vague recollection of Angie mentioning that she liked viscose a lot when it was paired with something else (in terms of durability, I think).

I personally love rayon and viscose--love that drape!

Viscose is rayon and I love it if it is good quality. It is a celulose fiber made of regenerated scraps thrown together, mushed up, threaded, then woven. I usually wash my clothing made from it. If the weave is a twill, I notice more shrinkage and size up. But, I wash and dry silk too. Cold water and air or delicate cycles of washer and dryer. Rayon drapes beautifully and breathes like natural fiber.
