But the modern use as "pleasant" is quite recent.</p> <p>I think of this whenever I come across another socially inept man complaining that he's a "nice guy" and women should date him - generally with a tone of entitlement. Perhaps it's always carried a negative connotation. Reminds me of what I learned about 'nest egg.' I've always imagined it as money squirreled away. I'm a city girl. But a nest egg is a wooden egg that farmers put in the nest. The hen sits on it waiting for it to hatch and leaves real eggs in the meantime.
