Oh, and that's so interesting about *nice.* Because actually, I grew up with the word *nice* being a terrible social cut. As in, you know whose membership application was going to be rejected when everyone would say, "She's a very nice girl."

Similarly, the word "nice" is not as nice as you might think:

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=nice

The original use of nice in the middle ages was definitely not very nice. It shifted towards something moderately positive (fastidious, precise, etc). You can still find that usage (fine, subtle - as in "a nice distinction") in some books from ~100 years ago that we still read. But the modern use as "pleasant" is quite recent.

I think of this whenever I come across another socially inept man complaining that he's a "nice guy" and women should date him - generally with a tone of entitlement. (Nice is different than good, as Sondheim said.)

It's always a wonder to me that we can ever agree on any meanings for words, especially adjectives :)

Love the last paragraph:

I find it a little disturbing that some of the central issues we have with beauty (especially feminine beauty) are actually inscribed in the very words we use to describe it. There’s no getting away from these tensions. But it is useful to recognise that sexism and misogyny (to name just two problems) are deeply embedded in our language, and if we want to sort them out we will have to go right back to the beginning. See you there.

Thanks for sharing this article! Interestingly, when I read the two definitions to my husband he thought the first was what most people think. In fact he disagreed quite strongly with the idea of "delicate" being associated with pretty, and didn't really jive with the second, more common, definition at all.

Yup, I have known some people who were described as 'pretty' who I would also add cunning and crafty...smile...
Words are our tools to get to the heart of how we feel...Interesting stuff...
(Also, the subjective nature of certain words to bring memories, help us to remember feelings...I think that is also caught up in what words we use...)
Thanks for sharing..

Oh that's very interesting. Perhaps it's always carried a negative connotation. Reminds me of what I learned about 'nest egg.' I've always imagined it as money squirreled away. I'm a city girl. But a nest egg is a wooden egg that farmers put in the nest. The hen sits on it waiting for it to hatch and leaves real eggs in the meantime. So in reality a nest egg is not savings but capital.
