This is so funny I actually laughed out loud. Oh, the allure of the fantasy life. I hate to cook, I don't like anything about it, but it doesn't stop me from standing in a fancy cooking store imagining myself at the stove, whipping up some elegant repast if only I had the right skillet. :D

Undies are a whole other thing. I love pretty undies and wear them regularly. I did a wholesale update of my lingerie drawer about six months ago and couldn't be happier. It's full of pretty things that fit well and are comfortable.

This is me !! I have so many bras that I either never wear or rip off after wearing for 45 seconds. I'm actually trying to plan a trip to nordies this week for a bra fitting. I wonder how it's going to go if I get there. I did the measure and came up with a 29 or 30 band size and yet I can barely stand the tightness of the 32 bands I own.
Should be interesting or maybe there is no hope and it's just me feeling weird in a bra.

Oh fascinating. No, I have no fantasy bras, which is not to say they are all grandma. I'm sure it has more to do with the way I do laundry. I am neurotic about sorting. Which means I wear everything I've got until I've got enough to justify doing laundry at all, lol.

Hilarious and true...and not just bras. I have a few fantasy life dresses too. My bras that don't get worn aren't fantasy life though...just failures in the ongoing half-hearted search for greatness. If I ever find it, I will stock up like crazy.

And...Skylurker is hilarious too!

I'm late to this thread, but I loved the article and how she so cleverly portrayed what we on YLF call dressing for your fantasy life!

And I love her as a writer too, and when I've seen her on TV. Plus she is married to David Mitchell, who is on BBC (and thus Australian TV) a lot and whom I'm a particular fan of in Would I like to you?

My bra drawer isn't like hers though. It does have 2 that I wear all the time. Then there are 3 strapless ones which I also wear all the time (but only in hot summer). Plus 2 handed down ones from my mum that I wear if for some reason I can't grab the 2 favourites.

I loved that she identified the habit of buying bras for a fantasy life. I think her description of the narrative as part of the "fantasy life" buying process is spot on:

Women, however, think: “I’m going to be the kind of person who has hummus. I will buy a tub of hummus to effect this.”

It’s all a narrative. We picture ourselves flitting about in Italian shoes, carrying a bundle of newspapers under one arm, buying fresh bread, laughing as we pass a dog, exchanging a smile with an attractive passer-by, leaving a trace of floral scent on the breeze."

I'm also in the minority. I wear all my bras - no orphans at all. I am VERY fussy about my bras and am also hard to fit. (I wear a 28D - but Simone Perele makes a very small 30D that works perfectly, so I lucked out. No other brand in that size is snug enough on the band. Not even Chantelle).

My bras not only have to fit and feel comfortable - but they have to look very pretty. I love lace and wear matching knickers.

I LOVE PRETTY UNDIES!

Ah cheers ladies! So interesting to find out how other people source and care for this mysterious garment. I knew there was something wrong with the article and I'm beginning to understand now.

A really good bra has to fulfil three criteria:

Comfort, fit and support: no explanation necessary

Foundational value: needs to create a good profile underneath your clothes

Aesthetic appeal: looks nice if you're not wearing anything else.

My three bras, the ones I reach for, tick all those boxes. All three fit well, have simple foam cups that create a nice profile, and look kind of cool on their own. Nice colours, cute strap details, that sort of thing. None of them were cheap and all three are quite unusual in the bra universe, which is why I only have three of them. (In case you were wondering, they get bagged up for gentle wash on the wool cycle and they're holding up fine.)

I have other less pricy bras which tick two out of three, and they do get worn, just not as much. Some look and feel great but don't cut it as foundation pieces. Others give great support and look fine as long as they're covered up. One particular offender looks amazing inside and out, but is hellish uncomfortable. And sports bras, well, they're gear.

So I suppose my take home is that I need more like these three bras, which were stupid expensive and rarer than rocking horse manure.

So funny, love it. But that's not me either. I hate buying bras and certainly don't buy pretty lacy ones. Being on the busty side, I need some that hold me in firmly and don't let me bounce around too much and those aren't usually very pretty When I find some I like I get 2 nude, 1 white and 1 black and pray that they don't discontinue them (which is usually the case and I have to search all over again).

Skylurker, darn it, you just crushed every wannabe French woman fantasy I've ever had!

I searched for a bra that fits me perfectly, will work under every fabric and stocked up. I have many, most are black and nude, but I wear all of them. I rotate them in my drawer to make sure they get even wears. The exception being specialty bras; strapless and racer back bras and at least one pretty, lacey bra set for my French woman fantasy life.

i enjoy wearing colored bra and undie sets and do not mind hand washing. I just swish-soak-swish and rinse and hang to dry in the shower. It extends the life and has become a nightly habit. The chore is if things pile up.
The article is a hoot. Thank you for the link.

I have found a bra that I like so much that I now own at least a dozen and when it is on sale I will buy another couple. I own one other bra because it has very tiny straps that I need for an evening top.

That's it. I am too old to be uncomfortable.

hmmmm. i guess i'm in the minority, the only bra's that i don't wear regularly are the ones that i buy, wear and decide they aren't really comfortable. these are saved for the occasions when I'm behind on laundry and therefore am forced to wear the uncomfortables….which then absolutely pushes me to get the laundry done!

I enjoyed the article, though I don't relate.
The only bras in my drawer not in regular rotation are the specialized ones - and don't get any idea - I know the reputation you give to French women - by specialized I only mean the strapless ones I use for sleeveless dresses.
