UmmLila, I have a Rag&Bone gilet. It resembles a sleeveless trench because of its length and classic tailoring. I believe accessories help it to appear more feminine. I have a favorite brooch which I attach to the lapel (which it has). I also make sure to wear it with feminine shoes and tops or a dress. I think the mixed vertical striped vest from Far Fetch looks very stylish and could work well for your purpose. I also like the matching trousers......the vertical stripes would add length.

I’m not sure if this is true for you, but one of two problems I have with vests is contrast level. I also need to be mindful of how they break up my body into boxy looking sections— arms, legs, torso, etc. Since I have a rectangular shape, breaking it into horizontals or high contrast geometrics is not flattering.

Thanks Carla for showing that link! No helpful suggestions from me, as I haven't worn vests since my eighties childhood ;). But I have been wanting one ever since the first of the new Star Wars trilogy came out - was sure Rey's look would find its way to retail soon but so far no cigar... I would wear mine pretty masculine.

I used to wear a black vest with stripes a few years ago and always felt more put together in it ( I do like stripes in general ). The Zara' vest looks much more fluid - it could be more feminine piece. It all depends on your preference - ordering couple different styles could help.

Interesting question. I've been doing a vest and patterned blouse combo myself lately and loving it!

However, my gilet is not dressy at all but is more of a "sherpa" athletic/moto style with a somewhat extreme collar, and this helps dress down my blouses. I wear this combo with jeans or a casual skirt, and combat boots (current fave pair is a refined lug-sole, heeled platform style).

My lifestyle does not call for anything dressy or businessy though, and YMMV. I think it boils down to what type of expression you're looking for. I love my particular vest/blouse combo but, for example, would never add a long, traditional-style gilet to my closet.

Hope you find your vest! Or maybe you'll need a couple of different ones to express different parts of you.

I like Bijous versions!
I've worn vests in corset style to Faire, with long flowy skirts, with a blouse or just a tank top under. So those you have could work in that way, or with flowy trousers.
I also like long ones over sleeveless dresses, for mild summer days.

UmmLila - exactly. You can’t see my vest well. It’s very fitted and the buttons are hexagonal gold w black. Very elegant w Lace cami and blazer. There are times I want to bridge a waist when there are no belt loops. I love the ones you’ve selected. I’d like a very dressy black brocade or silver and black. I’d also like a more casual one. High end designers have been showing them the last 2 yr. but they really haven’t hit mainstream. Btw I always wear mine buttoned so good fit is needed. Can’t wait to see what you select!!

I love vests but in the last year or so I let go of my old waist-length cropped ones. I had a couple of really nice menswear-style ones but unfortunately bought them during the five minutes I got (relatively) skinny and then couldn’t button them up comfortably a few years later. Ah well, I find them a little challenging to style and they probably don’t look super current anymore anyway.

I am now enjoying longer ones — styles more like a hip length or slightly longer sleeveless blazer. And I love my oversized faux shearling and leather vests, but that may be too casual a vibe for what you are describing?

Just realizing that I don’t have either of my vests of the sleeveless-blazer type in Finds. I’ll see if it can find some good examples to post.

I love vests although don't have many at the moment. I haven't ever had one that is quite as menswear looking as your examples though. I love the tops Bijou shows with hers, nice sleeve detail to poke out and make it look more feminine and agree with Lisa that you could play around with the styling and see if anything strikes you.

I actually wear my long gilett today-and love it so lon g and structured, but with a drapey front-, it stays in my office and layer it for indoors only, as a bit too long for my coats at the moment.

I think Bijou has a good point about the top you wear underneath. A blouse softens and pretties whereas a button up would not. Also, I feel longer vests are more feminine. I used to have a vest with a little ruffle at the neck for the reason you mention - I just looked like I was wearing my brother’s clothes otherwise.

Well, you know how to wear clothes very well, and I'm sure you can play a bit with some styling . If it really doesn't sit well, figuratively and literally, you can always send it back. My initial reaction is that it is pretty masculine (I know we are trying not to use those descriptors anymore, but I'm at a loss for another word) for your style though, but glammed up with patterns and beautiful fabrics, it could look pretty cool. I like longer vest/gilet-ish things personally.

I have a vest, although mine has a peplum, so not as menswear styled as these. I have wanted a vest like this though! I wear mine with lace tops to add a bit of feminine glam to my vest. This is my vest, and the tops and knits that I wear with it. I like the coloured lace top the best.

I really shouldn't subscribe to Nili Lotan e-mails, because I am so tempted the way the clothes are styled, but many of them (e.g. the drop crotch pants) do not suit me in person. I do enjoy some of the pants, mainly for being different from my winter jeans norm, but casual enough that I would wear them every day. (This the brand of my zebra crazypants from a previous post.)

Now I've been taken by the idea of wearing a vest in my early winter layering rotation. I'm always cold, and I often throw a puffy vest over whatever I have on indoors, or as a mid layer before a coat. I was thinking that a dressier more shapely vest might be nice, even though not as warm. I like the idea of this pinstripe one as a pattern mix over patterned blouses, or maybe just over featherweight cashmere or merino sweaters.

However, I don't usually do well in menswear for women tailoring, as I am not either shapely or gamine enough to make it look feminine.

Who among you are vest/ gilet wearers? How does it work for you?
