Taylor, Angie - that's the trouble with this alteration; you can't just do a straight-across seam because it would show, because of the way this vest is done... I forget the terminology but it's essentially "revisible" unlike a blouse where if you turn it inside out you see the seams. Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time explaining this. But, it's the reason vests can be really tricky to alter.

To alter a vest like this, you need to use a seam ripper to remove the seam all around both inside and outside layer, and also many inches down the sides of the armholes - front and back. Enough inches to be able to completely turn the garment inside out. Then you re-sew the shoulder seams where you want them (with a slope). Then you have to turn it back out, and hand-sew the sides back up. So it's not really a simple matter but rather involved.

Maya, this is a lot to digest, but... maybe it offers a permanent fix for sloping shoulders?

http://www.elitefitness.com/fo.....53355.html

If you don't want to get into weight lifting, reading through this, my take-away is that flexibility is highly important. Yoga may help immensely. You may be tight in certain muscles that are pulling your posture awry. The sloping shoulders could be a symptom of future back and neck problems. :-(

This is just a guess... sloping shoulders are not an issue I've ever had, though my mom has sloping shoulders - but I obviously did not inherit them, if this is inheritable. So I may be completely off-base here!!!

However, I would say it is worth a try to improve flexibility - *especially* if you are having any back or neck pain!

I like wearing it closed though--kind of works like a corset. I have to admit it does bother me though. It seems a lot more noticeable with short hair. Guess now is the time to find that new tailor.

Might be a little long through the body..I agree w/Nicole an easy fix .Just take up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in the shoulder seam..straight across should fix that.

Ah! Cute sloping shoulders. It’s easy to suppress that seam if they don’t need to re work lining. But it probably doesn’t look that bad when we see the whole of you. I saw you in that waistcoat and I’ve just relooked at the pictures that I took of you in it. It’s barely noticeable, especially when you wear it open:

Actually, I don't think it's an easy alteration - if you want it done right. Nicole, your mom would know better, but i seem to recall from my long-ago sewing days that making a vest is fairly tricky - one of the more tricky garments to construct.

I'd try to explain why, but it would take too long to type it out.

I agree w/Laura. I bet it's an easy alteration, and one worth having done.

Aha, this explains the bra strap slippage we both experience!! It looks like your shoulder slopes slightly. I am sure my shoulders do the same.

This would seem to be a quick fix at the tailor since there's a shoulder seam that could be adjusted.

OK, I asked about this before but Angie requested pictures which I have finally gotten around to taking. The vest is not properly hugging my shoulder. Once again I think it's because my shoulders are too sloped. I'm wondering how it can be fixed, and if it's worth it, given that it's an H&M vest? It's more noticeable in person than it is in the pictures.
