Anne, I only avoid 100% viscose. The fibre hold up well in a blend.

@anne That makes sense that the terms are used interchangeably - I suppose it's just coincidence then that the 'rayon' clothing I've had in the past was uncomfortably thick &/ or unbreathable. Maybe I should still give the fabric a chance to redeem itself...

To be fair, Zara is a fast fashion brand, so they still sell plenty of duds - I haven't tried any of their viscose garments that are blended with something else (e.g. polyester), but I was pleasantly surprised that their 100% viscose dresses are so breathable, even at a low price point. It seems there can be great variation in how nicely manmade materials drape & breathe - price is no indicator of quality.

It's interesting that you mentioned cotton - does your cotton not crumple at all compared to your viscose? Is it 100% cotton or blended with elastane?

I actually like viscose--for it's retro look and pleasant feeling. For decades, I have always had at least a few viscose items in my wardrobe, particularly in summer. They haven't caused any problems so far. True, viscose items might crumple, and some might look worn after a couple of years--but the same could be said about items in other fabrics. My viscose items have never faded or got any holes.

Anne, I try not to buy viscose for the same reasons you mention. I have a limited number of viscose clothing and some is fine. One skirt in particular has been very good. However, too often my viscose has been terrible and the price paid is not always reflective of the quality. Most of the time, if it is viscose, I refuse to buy it.

I have had bad experiences with 100% viscoze, for all the things above (srinking, decoloring and wrinkling)-so I never buy in wovens. But love viscoze blends (for ex. jeans-they are lighter and thinner which I love for summer) ...and do not have anything against knitted blends, either.

Zaeobi, I thought viscose and rayon were the same. Your experience is definitely not mine though. My stuff crumples even if dried on a hangar and has not worn like iron. Mind you, my items were cheap and worn a lot, and I guess I am comparing to cotton.

I have sensitive skin, perspire a lot & live in a very humid, subtropical climate - all the more reason to stock up on very breathable & machine washable clothing, that can really take a beating.

Are Rayon & viscose the same fabric? I ask because I have some 100% viscose, printed long shirt dresses from Zara that fit the above bill perfectly (they wear like iron yet feel both cool & drapey even in 30c+ weather. Yes there may be a few wrinkles, but they disappear if you immediately hang them to dry & the prints are fairly forgiving). This may have skewed my perception of viscose a little, since I've bought these dresses in different years & yet found the quality to be consistent (I haven't experienced the fading you mentioned, even in the black dresses).

That said, I've had horrible experiences with garments labelled as 'rayon' in the past. If they are indeed the same material though, then I may need to rethink my 'fabric first' approach to shopping for new clothes (e.g. I'm totally with cindysmith re: polyester - both that & acrylic are absolute deal breakers for me when shopping).

I try and avoid viscose and rayon because I have terrible luck with pilling. There is also the environmental impact to consider; these fibers have to be treated with harsh chemicals to soften them.

The treatments are ostensibly to make natural fibers act more like synthetics in that they don't wrinkle as easily. I find that, contrary to popular belief, polyester DOES wrinkle. I also find that wrinkles do NOT iron out of polyester like they iron out of natural fiber fabrics. If I'm going to have to iron wrinkles out, I'd rather do it to natural fibers that don't scorch/melt/turn shiny.

I tend to avoid viscose for reasons already mentioned. It is very unforgiving of lumpage and bumpage as well as not being very durable. Additionally, I tend to run warm and find that viscose makes me perspire too much.

I like rayon/viscose tops in summer time - not in knit fabric, but smooth woven one. I do buy them slightly loose and wash in mesh bags in cold water on delicate setting with air dry. Mine are surviving pretty good even Old Navy tops bought on clearance.
My choice of fabric depends on my skin sensitivity and breathability of fabric - so I'd "baby" my fav clothes and duplicate some in different colors/prints.

I love rayon, especially in blends. Woven rayon can shrink initially and sometimes requires pressing, but it’s more breathable than poly, thinner/lighter than cotton or linen, and easier to take care of than most silk. For me it’s worth the slight amount of extra work. And rayon knits feel awesome.

Rayon has a characteristic of eternally shrinking just a bit, even when washed in cold and air dried. I understand some items labeled rayon are actually viscose, which has same reputation for shrinkage. I also read that both of these can deteriorate from sunlight.

I agree, wrinkly and clingy. I have 2 tops. Their saving grace is that they are a bit too big for me now as they were bought before i lost weight. They would probably be worse if they foit better, as they are less clingy.
don't put them in the dryer. dry on a hanger.

I cross posted with Liesbeth and agree with her too, jersey viscose is very clingy and shows every lump. However not all viscose looks the same. I have 2 tops that if it didn't say I would think they are a strong cotton (I love 100% cotton) but these did not hold up in the washing machine at all.
