Marley and Janet, I've been on the fence about the blue blazer. I really would like to wear it frequently as a topper, but gosh, I hate dry cleaning. I'll think about it some more before it goes back. It does look terribly cute, and the fit is spot on.

I have never even considered washing my velvet blazers! They need a dry clean every once in a while, but I don't wear them often, so the cost of upkeep is very low.

Gigi - I have that blue velvet jacket and yesterday I wore it with a white tee and distressed jeans! I (obviously!) think that it can be dressed down!

As far as velvet goes in general - I think it can be appropriate for work settings - depending on styling of velvet item.

Janet, you're such an enabler. I actually had thought about switching out the buttons, but the blazer also happens to be dry clean only, which I've decided is a deal breaker. I bought it because the web page said it was able to be washed; but the care tag said no washing, not even hand washing. So I wouldn't be able to wear it as often as I would like. Otherwise I might have given more serious thought to replacing the buttons.

I think it is very dependent on the piece and on the particular workplace. In finance or law? I probably wouldn't go there (at least not in the conservative part of the country I live in). For a more business casual office? Absolutely, if styled correctly. I work in education and rock plenty of velvet, but it is hard to view that as inappropriate when the person in the next classroom is sporting jeans and sneaks!

To me, it's not the fabric that makes this top swerve towards party, as much as it is those sleeves.

Or maybe: party sleeve with non-party fabric = OK for work
non-party sleeve with party fabric = OK for work
party sleeve with party fabric = not the best for work

So my 'math' makes it not great for work, but math should not have to apply to fashion - wear what feels good to you!!!!!

I agree that it depends on the velvet garment and the way it is styled. I have a couple of pairs of velvet pants in various cuts and colors, and wear all of them to work, with simple sweaters. They just look like slightly fancier cords, and my workplace is pretty casual.
The top is lovely and you already got some good suggestions on how to make it work for work. I also might try it under a faux fur, leather ir any other texture est.

Gigi, couldn't you switch out the buttons on that blazer for something more subdued, to make it work in more settings? It's a beautiful blazer, and I switch buttons all the time -- it's the easiest change to make!

joy--actually the white buttons are the models necklace... the shirt is a solid black.
gigi--yes, i've noticed that the line between velvet and cord pants is/can be thin...l also agree with you re that blazer, i saw it yesterday and IRL it looks so much dressier than the picture.
sterling & binkle- i was imaging it with ponte pants or simple wool cigerette leg trousers, but now i'm thinking that may not read business enough. i do have some wool plaid pants, but i'm trying not to buy one trick pony's.......
janet--love that shirt, and can totally see that working in a rocker chic way...but maybe since its go that button down thing it may work better for bus cas than what i "found"...more to think about.

I think it can work, depending on styling and your workplace. The cut and color are simple and classic enough. I think if you style it with, say, tweed skirt or trousers, and maybe a scarf at the neck instead of anything bling, it will dress it down into work territory.

I just got the velvet shirt below, and could see it styled for a workplace as well, although the vibe is a bit more casual/rocker the way I wear it. I wore it to a concert a couple of nights ago with my tartan plaid jeans and heeled booties.

I think that this top would work fine for work.

I think that with velvet, a lot depends on the cut and even the color. I think that black and other neutrals are easier to get away with in a professional or casual setting. However, deep reds and blues and greens are read much more "holiday festive" to me.

I recently bought the below jacket but decided to return it because it was just too "party time" for me. It was beautiful, but I wanted something that I could wear in a variety of settings. So back it goes. I'll be looking for something in a more neutral color that doesn't have so much bling (there are more gold buttons on the sleeves, which you can't see in the pic).

I also bought the pants below, but for some reason, they don't seem to me to be so festive looking. Maybe it is because of the lack of bling. I have worn them with a plain white top or ivory turtleneck and don't feel out of place in a professional or casual setting. I think that maybe the fact that corduroy has been back for a few years might have affected my feeling about the pants, because some of the newer corduroys are almost like velvet.

Yes, cut/style would dictate whether the garment was party or work. I think this top would be ok for work, paired with "strictly business" pants or skirts. Velvet and tweed or velvet and merino - A nice contrast! I think December especially is more forgiving of holiday type clothes too.

It probably depends on your place of work and how you style the velvet top. I think you could do it. The ruffles on the sleeves make this top more dressy to my eye, but the white buttons make it more casual. I fact, it looks like it was meant to be worn not all dressed up. The necklace that the model is wearing helps to bring down the party animal.

This is hard. I think of velvet as a party animal, but if the cut were right, it might translate to the office too. I think the shirt shown could be worn at the office.
