Have loved velvet pants since the '70s. Though they are not permanently in fashion, they tend to alwayse come back. I love them because they are casual elegant (or elegant casual if you want) and can be styled with almost anything. These are just some of the items I have worn with my velvet pants:
● Tee, same colour as the pants, or a lighter tone
● Patterned button-front shirt, one of the colours being the same as the pants
● Glitter turtleneck
● Mohair pullover
● Lace blouse
● Multi-coloured patterned V- or round-neck pullover
● Pullover with Breton stripes
● Cardigan, same colour as the pants
● Long checked cardigan
● Velvet blazer in a contrasting colour
● Corduroy waistcoat
● Tweed blazer
● Thick wool outer jacket
● Knitted hat & gloves
● Chunky pendant
● Patterned scarf/shawl
● Thin wool socks
● Loafers
● Oxfords
● Suede booties
● Fashion sneakers

I know you said you were leaning toward a wide leg pant, but would a straight leg give you more footwear options (I'm new here, and not very savvy... hoping to learn!)??? I remember when I wore a wide leg trouser for work I felt limited to pumps or point-toe flats. Granted, that was at least a decade ago.... :\

Angie - That mustard velvet suit is gorgeous!

I'm on the fence. I prefer the look of a velvet skirt, and this one is gorgeous. Tried and tested by clients.

That said, I LOVE the mustard velvet suit. A few classics on the end.

J crew has cute ones with an elastic waist. I believe I own a pair in the same cut, but made of lace not velvet (a few years old). They are SO comfortable and easy to wear with anything.

Anything in velvet becomes a jewel tone and black can be a most deep black. For color reasons I have decided not to wear deep velvet, especially black, next to my face. Are the colors flattering for you? A velvet jacket could be worn with jeans or a black pair of trousers or pencil skirt so it can be versatile. Velvet bottoms with a denim jacket..same thing, casualizing the velvet. .

I, too, have worn slouchy velvet trousers to work during the dark days of November through February. The tucked silky blouse works, but also slouchy sweaters or lace tank tops under a topper.

I like velvet with a contrasting texture - highlights the lovely velvet.

And I think you can treat some velvet pants just like jeans, if the pants are structured (not flowy). Meaning, they can work with many many things.

Denim and velvet is a great combination - can be dressy-casual, or edgy-dressy: denim shirt, blazer, or traditional denim jacket. Wear a simple cotton, or fancier sequin tee underneath. Faded denim with velvet is so nice!

Poufy poet/boho blouses or crisp cotton shirts.

Kimono style topper - can be casual or dressy depending on the shoes.

From a super-chunky knit, like a cabled sweater, to a fair-isle pattern, to finer merino or cashmere. I guess mohair or angora might not work (little fuzzies everywhere). You could experiment with sweater style too - cropped or long or a more traditional length.

Statement jacket: brocade, quilted silk/satin, patchwork.

Doc Martens, Cowboy boots, moto boots, the new hiking-style boots, even real hiking/work boots like Timberlands.

I think I like velvet!

Ive worn velvet pants to work, with blouses or refined knits, but they're a pet hair magnet so keeping them off my sartorial menu for now

I am thinking about a pair of velvet pants for the holidays - leaning toward wide leg (Boden, J. Crew). I need some inspiration on styling them for a range of occasions. I know I can wear a classic tucked silk blouse and heels or flats (leopard, suede, etc), but I like my pieces to be hard-working and versatile. I am tall and thin, but let’s not limit to that! Thanks
